My Solo Trip to Taiwan from Japan

Finally, my channel's first foreign travel video!
Taiwan (Taipei airport) is only 3.5 hours away from Tokyo. And for those living in the Schengen zone, "a foreign country" may not seem so special. But as someone who lives in the island nation, it is always something that excites me even if it is a close country.
For my first trip abroad in a long time, I chose Taiwan. It's kind of like, "yeah the first overseas trip after the pandemic is of course Taiwan" for many Japanese.
Taiwan is an island country about the size of Kyushu with a population of about 23.5 million. It is very close to Japan, especially from Okinawa, which takes only 1.5 hours. The cost of staying is not so different from Japan.
I highly recommend Taiwan as a travel destination. It has a unique and complex culture and you can enjoy not only the big city but also the rich nature. Despite having the same level infrastructure and safety as Japan, it is a bit "looser" than Japan. That is the biggest attraction. For example, no one cares if there is a dog in a convenience store. The police do not care if a street performer is in the middle of the street. I love it.
Taiwan has many Japan fans and Japanese speakers (yes, there used to be many Japanese speakers for other reason). Also, Japanese people understand about like half of their characters such as on signs, so it is a very easy for Japanese to travel to. For those who are not familiar with kanji, it may seem like a difficult country to visit, but as I have already said, it is very safe. Don't worry, there are even McDonald's : )
For Japanese lovers, it would be a very interesting experience because there are restaurants and stores that you have seen in Japan.
As a reminder, eating and drinking are not allowed on the subway. Do not drink water either. You will be fined.
Anyway, if this video makes anyone interested in Taiwan, I will be happy.

Additional info about the places I visited
The Presidential Office: you can rent an audio guide in English.
the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall: It is important to know that it is a political place. There is debate as to whether it should be reformed.
Houtong station: There are some nice cafes around.
I didn't make it, but if you are going to Ruifang Station, please go to Jiufen as well. It looks like the world of Spirited Away.
Ximending: It has a festive atmosphere if you go there on weekends, as shown in this video.
Yangmingshan: be sure to bring your own water.
Although I was not able to visit this time, Taiwan is not only Taipei. Taitung, for example, has abundant nature. Please consider visiting places other than Taipei by referring to guidebooks or such.

I am half Taiwanese, half Swiss. With covid, I haven't been back to Taiwan since 2018 and really miss it. With my work right now it's also difficult to plan a long trip from europe, so watching this relaxing video showing some of my second home was really heartwarming. Thank you!

Hi Mr Solo. I’m a longtime fan, got hooked on your vlogs during the dreary pandemic years. Always found your solo excursions soulful and rewarding. I’m in Beitou now and visited the Bathhouse Museum yesterday; free and worth a visit. It reminded me of the Japanese period in Taiwan. I loved your Taiwan video. You certainly captured the incredible energy in this beautiful island country. Look forward to your next excursion.

I never used to appreciate vlogs and videos like this, but that changed ever since I started your channel during the covid pandemic. The feeling I get from watching your videos is equivalent to feeling warm, content, and relaxed. It's also interesting and educational. You tick all the boxes in making such unique and enjoyable content. I talk about this channel a lot with my friends (maybe too much lol), as I also enjoy travelling and capturing moments like this myself. I'm really curious how this channel and your experience will progress in the future 🤍 Is there any other places abroad you are planning or wish to travel to next?

I've heard great things about Taiwan as a travel destination and your vlog definitely did it justice. I like how your trip blended the modern city, the more traditional neighborhoods and the beautiful countryside on the outskirts of Taipei. It seems quite similar to Japan whilst unique in its own way. Thanks for sharing your travel vlog with us - once again very comforting, motivational and expertly shot.

Thank you for the enjoyable journey. I hope you will visit my favorite city at some point, Bangkok. When EVA Air began operations, I took it from Bangkok to LAX. We had to stop over in Taipei, and the airline treated the transit customers to a meal from a hotel in the city. Such delicious food! It was a potato soup and a fried noodle dish. Nothing fancy but very memorable. They surely knew how to create customer good-will. ^^

For many Taiwanese Chiang-kai-shek memorial hall isn't the metaphor for democracy but a symbol for autocracy. In fact he was the instigator for 228 accident and claimed the lives of thousands of Taiwanese nationwide. He and his son had ruled Taiwan with iron fists for about 40 years. The followers of Chiang-kai-shek fleeting China to Taiwan and their descendants only occupies 12 % citizens currently living in Taiwan but almost all the important positions in the governments, military, judicial courts, tertiary education and media were given to them by Chiang-kai-shek and his son during their ruling Era. The amount of resources reserved for local Taiwanese was pretty slim and many of them felt like being treated as the inferior class. Today about 80 % of important positions in military and about 70% of key positions in media is still dominated by the second or third generations of those Chiang-kai-shek followers. The government dare not tear down the statue and the building for fear that it'll cause serious attacks from media and kindle the disturbance in Taiwanese society.
