Me too!! I was only 6 but I remember my Momma playing this song on her Soul Train Album. Even at that young age it moved me. I know my Momma is smiling at me in Heaven!❤

I've listened to this song literally hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. Sometimes back to back ten times or more. I've never gotten through it without tears. Not once.

Well, this brought tears to my eyes. Some songs just rip your guts out. And what a deep, melodious voice Claremce has. This song reminds me of stories my mother (98 yrs) told me of growing up - one of 9 kids- on a farm during the depression. EVERYONE one chipped in before and after school with chores, otherwise they wouldn't have eaten. Kids now days have no clue.

Tears are streaming down my cheeks. You know he wasn't the only one who went through this. I didn't have a lot growing up but music got me through it. I hate to admit it but I stole my clothes to get through High School. I did work hard through the summers to get through cosmetology school and I graduated at 17 and started work the next week. This song is going on my playlist. I'm glad you played it. Peace

I remember I was 10 yrs old when this song came out and it would make me cry because I had 6 sister's and 2 brothers but out of all of my siblings I was the closest to my daddy. I loved being with him and he taught me so much, when he passed away 6 yrs ago I took care of him until the last breath, he held my hand and told me it would help him move on easier. Anyway! His father died when my dad was 7 so he had to work out in the field (very hard work, I did too) he had to take his 5 little sister's with him every day. I would always think ofy dad when I would hear this song because daddy had a very rough life and I have to even today but he never knew about it because I didn't want to hurt him so I've always hurt alone. This song is his childhood exactly. Thanks for another great reaction

Clarence Carter was a wonderful artist. My favorites of his are “Girl From Soweto”, “Slip Away”, and “Back Door Santa” (you might recognize it from the sample that was used on Run DMC’s fantastic “Christmas In Hollis”).

As a farm kid this song has always been special. At the end of the day after the pain, sweat, the urge to run away from home because of the economic conditions. You end up staying because after all of that pain it doesn’t matter. You didn’t do it for yourself, it was pain you took for the family.

Wonderful song. I had it on 45 when I was a kid back in the 70s. We'd sing it sometimes when we were chopping or suckering tobacco in the field. My buddy who's been playing drums in my band for about thirty years, use to play drums for Carter sometimes when he was on tour.

Carter put you into your feeling with his 1970 hit " Patches," his bold voice and spoken word story of a young man who inherited the burden of life but man's up for his Mother and Family. Great song that shows the loving soul of a man.

I do remember this song and oh Lord it reminds me of what happened to me and my mama when I was growing up. I'm a 70-year-old white country gal from northern Mississippi. My daddy God love him died just before I turned 8 years old. He was one of the workers when they were first building the expressways from Memphis all the way through Grenada Mississippi, one of the dump trucks that was still running but in neutral jumped gear and ran over him while he had his back turned to it. My mama God love her, she was a waitress at a little old restaurant and back then the waitresses never did make hourly money they worked only for the tips that they made that's all the money they got. She paid all the bills and did buy me brand new shoes every year, but she always made my clothes never any store bought ones. Believe me I'm not complaining I think my mama hand made me more beautiful clothes than any of them fancy ones from those department stores. Excuse my language but she worked her ass off all the way up to the time I was 16 years old. What about the time I turn 16 maybe just 3 years into being in the ninth grade she got real bad sick and had to have an operation. I didn't even have to think twice about it I quit school got me a job help pay for my mama's hospital bills and to make payments on the rent and utilities etc. also of course when Mama came home from the hospital I took good care of her till she could really really get back up on her feet good. Thanks to my mama's encouragement I went to night school got my GED diploma. Oh heck yeah times for hard even up to the time I turned 16 years old. Because even then I would help Mom out by working part time between going to school, I would help out in some of the people's fields around us and also picking cotton or hoe and corn or cutting tobacco to help my mom out during the Spring, Summer and during the fall harvest. BUT that was just the way things were back then, we weren't the only ones that had a hard life. Those were hard times and they didn't care if you were white , black , yellow or whatever. Being poor and hard times don't give a damn what color you are. Growing up I ate many a plate a polk salad or dandelion greens or for that matter anything at all edible that you can scrap up from the woods. My brother who is 20 years older than me. Was overseas in the Marine corps at the time. I had learned how to fish from my daddy before he died so I could fish, I had an uncle that taught me how to hunt and I was able to shoot my fair share of rabbit squirrels and deer when I needed to. When times are hard you just hunker down and bulldog on ahead and do what you have to do. And Lord knows there were bad times but you know something I can still remember Mama turning on the radio and we would be singing songs together along with the Grand Ole Opry show on the radio. In fact there was a lot of times being Mama went fishing just for the heck of it because we enjoyed fishing together. I learned about being strong from my mama ,""she never let on to me if she ever felt down or overwhelmed and we might not have had much in money but Lord knows we had an overabundance of LOVE !!!!!!!!! And she taught me that by God with love you can do anything and get through anything. So to all the Mothers and Fathers and to all the Mothers and Fathers buy new marriage who took over raising kids as if they were their owns cuz they loved them. THANK ALL of Y'ALL 411 all of us youngins and teaching us wrong for right and how to work hard for what you get and not take what don't belong to you. For always being there when we need you and teaching us wrong from right. And for you young ones growing up nowadays believe in yourself no matter how hard times can get you will get through it. And there ain't Nothing that you can't do honestly if you put your mind to it. My darlings it might not happen overnight but believe me you can make a difference in this life. Sorry for talking so long like I said it brought back so many memories. I love listening to you when you do a review on a song and I darn sure loved your reaction to this one. ❤❤❤❤ May God bless you and yours. Sending out much love and I hope you and yours stay safe and healthy during these troubled times.

To be honest. That whole octave jump in the melody put me off this song when I first heard it. But once I heard the story and the chorus I was in tears. Cause my father died when I was 13 as well. and it just resonated with me at an emotional level. Loving it now.
