I had a similar experience. Studied everything for 40 years and just gave up. It finally happened spontaneously years later. It was so simple, obscured by the false goal of “attaining” Enlightenment. It’s simply about being present and being one with THIS, which is all there is and realizing you’re not your thoughts or emotions, but everything. Thanks for sharing. BTW, also recommend Tony Parsons and “The Open Secret.”

I enjoyed your story, Eric, and remember you on a Tolle discussion forum quite a few years ago and knew right away you 'got it'. Tolle was the turning point for me as well. After 27 years of meditation and numerous spiritual disciplines without getting anywhere I gave up in frustration. That very day I stumbled across The Power of Now. Things fell into place very quickly after that.

Also there has been amazing benefits to the " I wonder what my next thought will be" technique. I have experienced a drastic increase in my mile times. Running in that space of no mind, it feels like I'm able to run in a flow of an endless amount of energy! The only thing that stops me is my heart rate no able to keep up with the amount of energy my body is able to flow in! It feels unlimited, like I have tapped into some kind of unlimited energy source! When my mind is not using it in thought the body is free to be full of energy! The fastest mile I have ran in the space of no mind is at "7:06" and this is me average shape and conditioning. Also I've tried it in other sports and my timing becomes impeccable! It's almost like the subconscious mind is able to perform more efficiently when the consciousness mind is in stillness without any influence of thought! I've also noticed life flowing alot more easier and alot more positive manifestation without the mind striving for them!

@Eric Putkonen Hi Eric. I saw your post in the Non Duality sub-forum over at SF and thought I'd check out your YT channel. I too came across Eckhart Tolle during a decade long obsession with, and deep dive into consciousness studies along with meditation. It wasn't until the summer of 2019 when I came across a Sadhguru video and him saying "Open up a small space between mind and consciousness" that provided my first real insight into that "space", the deep inner silence. Then Vedanta NY videos started popping up in my YT recommended videos and within a month or so the floodgates opened wide. For lack of a better word I had an "awakening" experience that lasted several weeks. The best way to describe it is it was the waking equivalent of a lucid dream. Another way to describe it is a quote from Baba Muktananda: "Earth, moon, stars and sun revolve inside me". I like the lucid dream analogy better because anyone that has experienced lucid dreams can probably grasp what I'm getting at. The intensity of those several weeks faded but never totally dissipated and once "touched" it simply cannot be "untouched". "Knowing" one isn't body nor mind but that deep and utter inner silence that's ever-present and unchanging, even in the midst of intense activity. The Ineffable.

When i feel pain and suffering i just imagine i can take my own life at any time to end it all...and this is the moment the pain vanishes and i become happy ...it's because pain and suffering can't exist without someone who perceives it...all what is left after all my senses and thoughts are gone is that ever lasting background peace...ahh 😌
@lynlavalight
@lynlavalight Жыл бұрын
Psychological suffering is caused by resisting what is happening in the current moment, blocking the flow of Life living itself through us. I know this to be true from experience. So, I felt the urge to say this with love and understanding. From my heart and direct experience. I have also dealt with much suffering in my 70 years. Rather than entertain such a negative thought, regarding taking your own life as a strategy to let go of pain and suffering, what about finding a true teacher to guide you in real self-inquiry that might lead to liberation? You will discover how to recognize and abide in your true nature, pure awareness, that lacks any personal qualities and therefore is without suffering or any sense of lack. That also sends a better message to the Universe, than the "taking your own life" to avoid suffering. It indicates you are simply open to receive. My teacher says the Universe fulfills Impersonal desires and I have found that to be true. The trick is in losing interest in what your ego is constantly trying to hook you with and remain interested in the truth of your true nature, etc. You probably already know this. Best to you!

"Once you see through the game the game doesn't fool you anymore." I remember waking up from the mind, seeing it clearly for the deceptive machine it is, as if I was holding a clockwork. No more self, no thoughts, no time, no fear, no gain, no body, no death, no problems, no judgements, no words, no awkward relationships - only love, only this. Still, after about a day, identification retuned on a bodily level: subtly, seemingly innocent, just a barely noticeable contraction, a lumping in my stomach. "How could nothingness have a problem with identification?", I thought. Which is true. But soon I was my old suffering self again. The experience lead me to believe that genuine awakening occurs on a comprehensive, "energetic" level as many say, seeing through the mind is mere byproduct. It may also be the case that "karma" (unresolved biographical burdens, belonging to no-one) can hold you back. It also makes me think that awakening depends on certain rather mundane factors that have nothing to do with awakening itself: readiness, foundations, practice, an unshakeable resting in stillness. Understanding is secondary.
@NondualityChannel
@NondualityChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Understanding is primary, but it is not mental understanding nor a shallow glimpse. The fact a "me" could be believed again means it was not understood deeply enough...there was doubt and ignorance left for a "me" to remain. The understanding I speak of is not of the mind at all, but much deeper than that.
@torment4723

@@NondualityChannel Yes, in other words enlightenment is not a thing per se, it doesn't do anything at the practical level, except it does when it happens. It's paradoxical, yet true. Because when the ego reaches enlightenment, it can still be fooled, that is where i don't agree with you, enlightenment doesn't make the person not foolable once "obtained", you could still lose your mind, your brain is still a physical manifestation that can remember and forget, hence i think that statement is just a tiny bit superficial for the sake of the show, yet i do believe you are awakened. But i still digress that your present state of consciousness is in great part dictated by a human brain, which is, by definition, a physical construction, and which by definition, its state is impermanent. So yea, you could still be fooled, although it is highly improbable, because awakening is a total let go due to precise understanding of the nature of being, because, you will notice, if you are not 100% sure of what you discovered, you won't be able to let go, you will keep seeking. Once you find the cosmic joke however, you going back into chasing, is comical, because you simply KNOW what's happening... you simply KNOW there's nothing there other than what IS at any point in time.

So I've been trying eckhart Tolle's technique "I wonder what my next thought will be" and it has lead me to the place of no mind! The mind ceases and then all of sudden stillness and peace is there. This technique has been a door opener for me but every time the mind tries to take dominance I go back to the question to cease my mind. This is the only way I have done it to become present. What other techniques work to cease the mind? If my intent is not there to observe the mind, then mind takes over in thought. I guess I'm asking is there another way to do this, without always having to put my intention there to wait for my "next thought."

Thank you for making your channel, Eric. 🙏. I heard you say on another podcast that the video was "Flowering of Consciousness" by Elkhart Tolle (I may have that wrong). So, I purchased and listened to the audio book on audible. I've been practicing the being present technique (sensing the body like the hands or feet. Then while body). Also the pain body technique (which seems like the same technique in a sense). Would you just recommend me doing those ? I also see you answering some people on here to dive deeply into the "me" that is suffering. What do you mean by that? Self inquiry? I know awakening is like a paradox and that there's really nothing to "do" to awaken. I've tried so many other things since 2005. Kinda worn out from suffering and trying a million different things. Any advice would help. Also, did you practice being present for some time before your awakening? Or did it happen the first try. Thanks. 🙏👍
@NondualityChannel
@NondualityChannel Жыл бұрын
The first try...I did not practice being present for any time before. Of course, being present and without thought that time was not what caused awakening...because I had been present and without thought before (spontaneously). Being present and without thought only creates a more conducive environment for awakening. It comes down to understanding. We suffer because of misconception, beliefs, and ignorance. So you can either delve into the roots of suffering or delve into the roots of the "me" that is suffering. If there is a seeing that the "me" is a fiction...that understanding changes things. This would be self investigation, not self inquiry (as Ramana Maharshi taught it).

Great channel. Only thing that has me curious is that you've studied meditation and such, but never heard of being in the present until Echart? I asked this because I came across meditation, while suffering severely from depression anxiety, which had me very interested, I didn't meditate per conciously per say, but I was reading a lot about it and would always try to not think at all, where after about at year or so, which was not about 5 months ago, where I had the realization of how to keep my mind truly quiet. So I'm at the point in my practice where I can be alone and do this, which is very peacful. I'm happy with that, but now it's just hard for me to be at peace while being around people, because I feel im just to focused on myself at this point, which can make feel a certain negative way...asshole, anti social all the nonsense.

Just as I felt I was beginning to get out of the mind I went not quite below the mind but say between the level of thinking and below thinking. I don't if it is brain fog or what not, but at the same time a lot of realisations have come to me, such as one the journey we are all here to take which is realise our true selves. Basically everything that had made no sense when I read it years ago suddenly became known to me. Now at this present moment I am still the state of being below thinking and will probably will have to wait till death to realise my being.

Hi, my question is: to attain the stillness of the mind, Indian vedas talk about Yama and Niyama (which is basically a lot of disciplines to practice in order to purify one’s mind). It’s also said that if you can’t renounce then at least offer whatever you do to God. Point is, I work in the fashion industry, so I have to look and carry myself a certain way (which feels very superficial sometimes and also the kind of service doesn’t feel like true service to human beings like how the health care workers provide or teachers or NGOs etc). secondly I have a partner and I live with him but lust is forbidden in the list of disciplines one must follow. Does it mean I won’t be able to achieve this state ever? I recently thought of renouncing because I wanted to end my suffering and cut all my attachments because that is the root cause of every suffering but my family was really against it. Please reply if you have the time to go through it🙏🏻
@NondualityChannel
@NondualityChannel Жыл бұрын
There is no need to leave the world. Working in the fashion industry is not a hindrance. Nor is sex with a loved partner a problem. Just cease clinging and repelling (non-attached)...renounce "my" and "mine". The mind doesn't really exist...there is no point in controlling, disciplining, or purifying it. Stillness of mind (i.e. no-mind, or not-thinking) does not arise because of discipline, control, or purification. Just be 100% devoted to the feeling/experiencing of the moment...deeply and fully aware of here and now. Thought can not touch now. The closest thought can come is a moment ago in memory or a moment to come in speculative imagination. No thought is about this very moment and so thought is irrelevant. So ignore thought...focus on now.

Hi Eric, I love your channel. Can you please comment: A couple years ago a maniac went to the Mandalay Bay in Vegas, rented out a 20th story room or so, was armed better than a small country, broke out a window, and in cold blood murdered something like 84 innocent people. From your discussions, I think you say this maniac had no control over his actions, that the Universe self inflicted herself. I understand non duality to be we are all one Consciousness, all one organism, if you will. How can we account for mass murders? Is it just, 'it is what it is?' Thanks for your comment : )

@@NondualityChannel Thanks for clarifying. If I may share something: I once meditated deeply and at one point I entered a very clear state, very pure, most direct, the mind was gone. It might have been what Ramana calls Aham Sphurti. I think this was not a samadhi state; I watched the outside world without ego / person presence. No bliss but it was delightfully direct. My mind came back in though, thought was believed. Do you think 'your' awakening was a samadhi experience? (Actually, it must be.) See verse 13 and 14 of Upadesa Saram. @@Koen75NL - Awakening wasn't really an experience at all. Experiences come and go. The same could be said of samadhi (as it is spoken of today)...it is something you get into and fall out of. I am no enlightened person. I have read a lot. I think that you cannot describe true enlightenment. You can only experience it. I have a question...Do you have a sense of individuality? Because true enlightenment is when even your soul has lost its sense of individuality. You can be PRESENT at every level of consciousness simultaneously i.e. your mind, your sensory body, physical body and the totality pf consciousness. And going beyond the mind is I think not possible without the help of someone who has gone beyond it. I.e. a perfect living master. I think that your sense of enlightenment is upto the level of the universal mind because you said that you could see where your thoughts where originating from.

@@NondualityChannel Great to know that. I have another question. Is enlightenment possible without the help of a perfect living master? Because to go beyond the causal plane, one needs something which has gone beyond it... I guess this is a trivial question because there was always the first human being who got enlightened. He surely did not have no master. It must have been a divine intervention literally. Isn't it?
@NondualityChannel
@NondualityChannel 4 жыл бұрын
@@AsdityaR Yes, no living master is required. The "you" that would go beyond the casual plane does not exist...it is illusion. Planes are illusions too. There is no beyond anything and nothing to move to...there is just a seeing through the illusion. Seeing what is as it truly is...here and now...that is enlightenment. This can occur without a living master. Ramana Maharshi had no living master...for example. He said his guru was Arunachala.

@@NondualityChannel There surely is the eternal sound current. "In the beginning there was word, and the word was with god, and the word was god" as quoted from the Bible. Various eastern mystics have also mentioned about the eternal sound current that will lead you to non duality. I guess this happens when you try to meditate your way to enlightenment. If it happens like in your case, you dont see an apparent journey... Although its not a journey, more of a expansion of consciousness.

And could you describe to me the core of the senses, what they are, if you view them just as you leave truth? I know it is very harsh to state that you aint realised, but realisation is not something that just happens. It takes hard, hard work for hours and hours, days and weeks, before you just get the first glimpses of truth. You description just doesnt resonate with what happened to me when I got realised. So, to check you, could you pls answer the previously mentioned questions? After that, you can explain free will, what happens when we die, whether one and same paticle can be found at two different locations simultaneously, what love is, what suffering is, what happiness is, what a thought actually is, what an emotion is, what a particle is, and so on and so forth.
