Yes! Love that you reuse materials such as the styrofoam trays for your gardening supplies. I use mushrooms "trays" (pints?) which makes me feel nifty and thrifty instead of buying real trays even though my stash looks a little ghetto at times.

I use mushroom containers too! My family thinks I'm crazy that I save my grocery store plastic. I save strawberry containers (corms), grapes corms, cakes with lids (humidity dome), salad box containers! Maybe I am crazy for saving our trash 😮

Just watched this video and the businesses getting involved was a nice touch...I live in a small town area and we use to have Holiday cheer but not now......we use to have a Winter Walk at our State Park where there are many waterfalls and trails. We also use to have a January Ice Sculpture show down Main St.......also at Christmas time we had Shop The Town for local businesses.....not anymore.....🥲

I live in Texas and I ordered Ranunculus Cormes from highland bulbs. I was too late to order a variety of colors so I ordered the pink and white ones. I soaked them for two hours and then stated them in trays. They are growing I am so excited. I am in zone 9 and they seem to like the weather here in texas. This is the first time to grow them. I was excited to find you are growing them as well. I love watching your videos and you are very inspiring. Best of luck with all your flowers. I felt like that was a really good example of disclosure in your video. It does disrupt a video when content creators are too professional-commercial-esque when they get something for free or get a discount or a sponsorship, but it really irks me when people don’t disclose what is an obvious kickback or sponsorship at all. It was obviously genuine gratitude when you pulled out those peony roots, and made me more inclined to trust you as a content creator and to visit the wholesale for the small scale website! I know my comment is off the subject of the video, but its just another way to say “keep up the great work!”

I'll start my eucalyptus soon, too. Thanks for the reminder! I also use soil blocks, with the same types of trays you do, lol. I haven't taken a break from the seed starting, and I'm experimenting with how early I can start things and have reasonably sized transplants come spring. I've got a small tray of 40 foxgloves going now, too, since they seem to be such slow growers in the seedling stage.

I used to overwater my seedlings so much & had them in an area that didn't have any airflow... putting a fan on them was the best thing I ever did! It helps the stems to grow stronger too... I don't know if that'd be good for soil blocks though, they'd probably dry out too quickly...

It’s a miracle I got any to grow as I didn’t know all this. I will keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t dampen off. Too funny, I made grilled cheese and ham with tomato soup for the hubby and I last night. Not a usual meal around here but it was so good. And, I always make a mess too. 😆

I have never started eucalyptus from seed before. Is it a hard one? I have been watching videos on seed blocking and I am really wrestling with the idea of starting seeds this way. I hate for it not to work great for me and I lose all my seeds. Also there is equipment you have to buy to get started with soil blocking. But man oh man would it be great for space saving. So was it successful for you when you first started soil blocking? I just made those cookies the other day for my family! Delicious! By the way, I would watch your cooking videos 😁🌼

It can be tricky but should be ok with proper care- they are just one of those plants that take a LONG time to grow. Yes, I soil blocked nearly everything last year- even tomatoes! Maybe I'll start a side channel Flower Hill Farm EXTRAS for my cooking and randomness LOL

10-12 weeks before last frost is the recommendation- which is what I did last year. I found they needed a little more time to grow so I'm doing it earlier! I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do- but I know a lot of others are starting their as well! I'll bump them up to plug trays if they start to get root bound. Fingers crossed. Oh yes- I currently have a 9-5 -(more like 7-3:30). I create videos and do communications for local school districts!

I suppose you could for the smaller trays! I reuse the same small pieces of plastic throughout the season and from year to year! Most of my trays are the size of cafeteria trays but a shower cap would work for the little ones!

Your eucalyptus could be just going dormant . I had a rose of Sharon start inside last year it dropped all its leaves , I thought it was dead . It was not . I lightly watered it through the winter and hope for the best . I planted it outside last spring . It did great this summer . It's now about 4 feet tall . Just a thought . Give it a chance .

How long do you leave a seedling in a soil block so thst they get proper nutrition vs potting soil? I do fertilize seedlings as well but not sure when to plant out soil blocks...

I fertilize weekly once the seedlings get their first set of true leaves. The soil is the same. If they get too big I will transfer them to plug trays- I did it with multiple things last spring. It really is a great space saving tool!

I would check in with your local nursery to see if they have an extra bale. I've seen Pro-Mix at my local ACE hardware store- you might have to call them and ask them to order it in. It goes pretty quickly - but I'm sure willing to bet they would ship it in for you!

Yes I have! Many people do that to their dahlias before storage as well. I might consider it if I have an issue this year. Someone told me they think the algae is from the fish emulsion fertilizer I use.

It looks like you ONLY used the ProMix for your soil blocks? No 1 part soil, 1 part bark, 1 part minerals, etc. recipe? Just wanted to clarify because I buy soil block mix & it’s expensive but even more so with the shipping.

Pro-Mix BX M is already mixed up with many other things and it is ready to use. I suppose you can add something if you want to!

The ingredients are peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, limestone, mycorrhizae. I’ve had good luck with just the mix.

Why do you have to use 2 in for sweet Peas?

The sweet peas have a very large seed that doesn’t do well in the 3/4 block. (Think pea sized) - it needs a large block or plug tray to start.
