Excellent video John. Thank you for sharing those 5 tips. Social media is definitely overwhelming. It’s hard to stay in control and not scroll aimlessly through the various feeds in our lives - it’s refreshing to see someone else fighting back too (re: my Twitter detox). Looking forward to your next video.

I discovered your channel yesterday and within less than 24h I have deleted most social medias and unsubscribed many channels on yt that I realized weren’t relevant or helping me be more productive. I relate a lot to what you are saying, from the amount of books I used to read and read now or the too large amount of time I invest into social media, consuming instead of producing. Your videos have really helped me and I wanted to say thank you🌸

There's an app called forest that basically you set a timer for say an hour and in that time a little "tree" grows but if you get on your phone and leave the app the tree dies its a fun incentive and a challenge that keeps you responsible for staying off your phone completely

This is my strange addiction too, I'll definitely follow this! In order, to stop the temptation of using these apps, I downloaded an app which will block notifications, so I wouldn't get any notifications from any of the "harmful" apps, so I'll not use them. John, I'm also an imminent computer science major. I want you to make a video detailing your career aspirations & what you intend on doing as a computer scientist for the future, share with us your idea of what the future will be like in a technological space. Thanks! Great video once again.

This is just coming on the right moment for me, I recently unsuscribed/unfollowed a lot of "crap" that didnt really interest me or didnt bring me anything, being critical with what I consume or do on these platforms, who I follow, etc (my case ig, fb and youtube). So great tips that come in in the perfect time. I really like ur content, makes sense to me to be suscribed to this channel, send u my support and wish u a great summer!

Great video, John! This came at such a great time for me personally. I just decided to do an experiment about two weeks ago where I started planning my days and cutting way back on technoglogy. I have seen an immense change in myself and after only one week, I decided to adopt this as my new way. My productivity and mood have improved a ton and I’m feeling more connected to myself than I have in a long time. I feel much more content in general. I use some of the same techniques you mentioned to combat the technology addiction. I would like to note that I will not be including your method of "fighting the algorithm" because I found your channel because one of your videos was recommended to me and so far I have binge watched all your videos and I am loving them! :) 1. I unfollowed anything and everything that made me feel anything but happy. I noticed I was quick to judge certain people online when they would post something-unfollowed. Sometimes I had FOMO and felt like if I didn’t follow this certain person, I would be missing out on important things, but in truth, their content didn’t really excite or interest me-unfollowed. I, too, only follow about 15 people on Instagram now and it's great! 2. I turned off all social media notifications. This way, I will only check social media when I want to, not when it wants me to check it. This is so simple, yet I noticed I immediately stopped checking social media as frequently after doing this. 3. I got an old fashion alarm clock and stopped using my phone as my alarm. I now charge my phone in my bathroom at night. This way I am not tempted to wake up and immediately check all my notifications. I also turn it on airplane mode and I do not switch this off until I am ready and open to receiving content. I noticed that checking my phone and seeing all different notifications after being away from it for hours was stressful for me. 4. In the morning, I now wake up and meditate for at least 10 minutes. Then I will usually read and allow myself to wake up slowly unless I need to get up and get ready for work that day. After about 30 minutes to an hour of meditation and/or reading, I allow myself to get up and check my phone while I eat breakfast if I wish to do so. I also put my phone away for the night much earlier than I did before. I no longer check my phone right before shutting my eyes. I replaced this activity with reading as well. 5. I now schedule time to watch KZbin and TV. These things are included in a list of free time activities that I keep in my planner. It includes things like hiking, running, and playing guitar. That way, when I see a free block of time in my schedule, I get to consciously choose something from the list. I feel like keeping a list of activities that bring me joy helps me to prioritize the healthier activities over spending time online. To watch KZbin for an hour means I cannot play guitar for an hour that day. Is that worth the trade off to me? I hope you can take something away from these techniques and I look forward to more content from you! -Morgan

THANKYOU FOR THIS! Yesterday I was just thinking about how much time I spend on social media and how, without even realising it, I'm wasting hours of time which I could use instead to achieve my goals. So I've done as you've said, I've unfollowed hundreds of people on Instagram (whose lives I wasn't even interested in) and removed all my subscriptions who I only watch if I'm bored. And I've already found time spare to read!! So thankyou very much! Sadie from Britain x

The other day I was standing in the train en saw this woman using her phone. Because I was standing next to her I could see what I she was doing on her phone (not like in detail, but close enough). I saw her scrolling through some sort of timeline. After some scrolling she went to the homescreen, swiped left, right, left, right (obvious she didn't know what to do with her phone). See then clicked a messaging app, checking for new messages, didn't have anything, went back to the first app and refreshed her timeline and checked this one out again. She kept doing this cycle over and over again. What I saw her doing here is what the majority of the people do when they are commuting, waiting or even walking. They just look at there phones as zombies doing things that have no added value. This is why I have deleted my Facebook and Snapchat and unfollowed 90% on Instagram. Also I have made sure I get 0 zero notifications/pop-up light/buzzing or anything from my phone (the only exception is being called). By doing this I have noticed that I spent hardly any time on my phone anymore. The funny thing was when I first had done all these things I still kept checking my phone and I was like, what is there to check? nothing.

I have another tip, which has to do with making yourself more aware of when you're consuming purposefully or just mindlessly scrolling. (I don't exactly recall where I read about this, but I do remember it is was described as a very effective) It's basically putting your phone (screen) in a monochromatic mode. That way you are not just responding to and being distracted by the colors and designs, but actually paying attention and focusing on the task you want to get done. I've tried it for a while as well, and I can definitely say that it made me way more aware of how colors were a big influence on my social media/general phone consumption.

Thanks for sharing John. This is a problem I have had for years. Have tried to curb it, been successful for a while, and then all of a sudden I lose control and am back to square one. Always nice to know I'm not in it alone :) One trick that I believe works for me is that I don't keep any apps on my phone, so that every time I need to access these websites I have to go to the browser and open them up and sometimes even log in. Since that increases the steps involved, it's less easier to just drift away into it mindlessly. Hope this helps :)

Came to comments to learn some more tips from other people and I am not disappointed :) Here is some things from me: There is an app called Cold Turkey that you can install both on computer and the phone(although it's limited on the phone), basically it allows you to block access to chosen websites, for a certain period of time. When you go for example to Reddit during block mode, and reddit is added to the list, you won't see Reddit mainpage, instead you'll see logo of ColdTurkey and a motivational quote. There is also a pro version with more functions i.e app blocking. I also use extensions for browsers. DF KZbin(disctraction free) for blocking certain parts of KZbin. "Custom new tab" for setting new tab as my callendar. F.B.(FluffBusting)Purity for modyfiying my facebook UI.(removing timeline, filtering notifications and much more) "Stylish" - Custom themes for any website, I use it for Youtbe to change colors to more dark, more neutral ones. On top of that I don't have facebook or Instagram app installed on my phone. If I really want to read messages on facebook through my phone I can always request Desktop version! :)

I really liked your idea of fighting the algorithm, I never thought about it that way but I think I will adopt it :) In my case, I never felt I was addicted to my phone because I have always valued quality time, that is focusing on really being there either for other people or for myself. I have always used social media - I use facebook, youtube, quora and whatsapp - as a tool to find informaton, events I could go to, connect with people but I use them to actually meet up in person. Of course, if that is not possible, it is just about sharing and learning about each other. I value relationships very much, so I always viewed connecting with someone as an investment into the relationship, I always try to consciously work on it. It is something very important to me, because I do not want to wake up one day and realize that I focused so much on work or personal development (as on myself only), that I completely let the relationships and friendships fade. Perhaps I am quite existential in this sense, that I very strongly realize for example, that one day my parents will be gone, so I take time to be with them, to help them, to say thank you for everything they provided me with. My younger brother will be an adult some day, so I take time to be with him when he is in his puberty, laugh with him silly, dance to crazy music. And since I have moved many times in my life and I am planning on moving in the future, I take time to catch up with my friends abroad, to actually visit them, to send them postcards, which is one of the most wonderful ways to show you remember. So I always viewed technology as a beautiful tool full of potential. You can use it to grow, to explore, to learn, to stay connected. Or you can get lost in meaniglessness. In the end, it is about time. What do you want to spend your time on in this life?

You are doing great.....Though I am not from Harvard.....but at my age 40 ....when I look back for the Research that I started since at age 31, I finally have come to some decisions...those are....1. Even though some are super genius on something....they still find that it is super struggling to develop the SKILL PATTERNS..!!....In software engineering....even a Quick sort becomes handy to solve a big problem....or even a solve is hidden in the Fourier Transformation or in Laplace Transformation....you know what do I mean..it is a dangerous...challenging path...you never know what is coming next...but always have to be super prepared.....and also very good to know when is what....for me I hardly can spend time for social Networking or touch my mobile.....Most of the time I spend, dive into the Knowledge Ocean....Collect some Valuables.....and store them properly for my future challenges....I follow the strategy of BEE....sorry for any offense, I just don't want any Programmer in the world use 10 years to find out when is what....it's just start developing SKILL PATTERNS...right away....thanks.

I have been thinking about the same question for long as well, there are many social and psychological problems emerging as the downsides of technology(especially the internet ). There must be a new formula that we can use to better coexist with the internet, to actually utilize the internet to reinforce our relationships and build up positive energies, to be in control of the internet instead of being controlled. This question is the source of my undergraduate studies as a sociology student.

Thank you for this video! I'm a Brazilian Computer Engineering Student and I'm fightying agains't the algorythm. I turned off all my notifications and excluded all unnecessary apps on my phone. Now, I'm trying to stop of play, I spent too much time playing Overwatch and I blame myself thinking in how much time I could spend everyday developing programs and learning English(btw, I hope you understand my comment). I hope we both continue being strong in our goals.

Hi John, I recommend using the extension called *DF KZbin* if you are a chrome user. It allows you to hide the recommended videos, side bar and much more. It helped me focus on more productive contents and saved a large chunk of time

for me, i've learned writing down my schedule creates a more intimate relationship with myself and my schedule. as opposed to google calendar, which is great and quite necessary for logging consistent tasks or scheduling future ones, you aren't reduced to clicks. you're writing things out with pencil and paper. it helps me build compassion for myself in terms of how much i can do within a day and helps me find balance between my ambitions and my needs.

I agree 99% with you John, especially on the growth book aim, and in general with the aim of this type of video. Still, all this time schedule, this "rules", "restrictions", well they seem a little bit too much if their aim is to keep us focus on what we have chosen to study and maybe to be good at it. In my opinion, if someone needs all of these restrictions, well it means that you need to change what you are doing because it is not what u really like. I am a bioinformatician, and yes I lose a lot of time every week doing nothing of productive. But it is this that keeps my mind sharp when I study or work. I need this free time, and I totally understand if someone else needs less free time than me to work well, but I came to an agreement with my self. I set an objective for the week, most of the time 2 or 3 per week, and If I did not achieve it on Friday, I will work Saturday too and if necessary on Sunday. This is what keep me focus when I need to be productive. If I work well during the week, maybe I can do some extra courses on the weekend, or simple go out with friends. So to sum up, Do you like to lose time during the week ? No weekend for u

Strategy 4 is something that I've adopted for some while now on twitter and it's been really effective because truly once you've been around the whole short amount of containt that's proposed to you, you really don't have much more to do on the app. Also, before doing that, I had canceled the app from my phone for a month so that I quite the habit of actually going on it whenever I was doing nothing, and when I got the app back, I totally canceled my old account and made a new one with only important subscriptions.

NoFaker 1. I was joking in reference to how at the start his addiction wasn’t to food 2. Just because I have an addiction doesn’t mean I love it
