I have a "plug and play" gear indicator on my Ninja 300. Very useful as gears are so close. Not much rpm difference between 5th and 6th. Best upgrade. Adjustable footpegs and bar risers are also worthwhile as they bring the bars closer.

@@CycleCruza go ride a Ninja 300 then tell me if a gear indicator is useful or not. The smaller cc bikes don't have a tall top gear. 5th and 6th are very similar. If you're hooning around you'll be "bug stamping" constantly to get the most out of the bike. On my big bike I do less gear changing but then again I have a lot more grunt to play with.

Anyone replacing their piston at 7 hours is nuts. Unless you keep up with Tomac. Get a valve check once or twice per year depending on your hours, or if the bike is getting hard to start get them checked. Good way to prevent issues without dropping in a piston every time. I have had four strokes with over 100 hours on a stock top end no problem, a buddy of mine has over 300 hours on a stock motor and still thrashes it.
@CycleCruza

Yeah there is no way I'm replacing a piston kit every 12 hours. lol I figure once a year I will get the valves checked and change the piston kit after 100 hours or less. We'll see, this is all an experiment for me to share on my channel. So far I freaking love this bike, it's a fooking beast and feels so lightweight, makes my wr250r feel like a pig off-road.

It is not an street bike, that was the mistake. Instead of buying an MX bike and force it into an street bike, why not buy a supermoto bike that comes that way from the factory, like a KTM 690 SMC or something like that?, less hassle and cheaper on the long run, you save a lot of money in maintenance on the long run.
@bsxxfurballxx692
@bsxxfurballxx692 6 жыл бұрын
1. the weight 2. the ktm is a rare sight to see but when do you see a street legal yz450. Prob the only expensive thing on that build would be the rims, he could of kept the stock ones on. Its not that costly to modify for street.
@someone46018
@someone46018 6 жыл бұрын
@@bsxxfurballxx692 It can be cheaper to modify an MX bike into a SM bike, but the maintenance of an MX bike is crazy, look for the price of a head, rings, piston and valve set for a YZ450 (which the lifespan is measured in hours!), then add to that the crazy frequency of oil changes and time consumed on maintenance tasks. It all adds up quickly , a lot!!
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
690/701 are pigs in weight, 340 lbs compared to 256 lbs for my YZ. As far as a KTM 500 exc-f and Husly 501 fe are street legal dirt bikes as well, they just have the emission shit and all of the lighting to make them legal. They require just as much maintenance as my bike. The reason I did not get a KTM is because I'm not fond of my closest KTM dealer and the next closest one is over an hour away. Yamaha dealers are everywhere. This bike makes a fun street bike, just requires more maintenance but with 3 bikes I don't ride it as much anyways.

Maintenance task are grossly exaggerated. My 08 wr450 had nearly 400hours off offroad enduro use on it (alot more stress than street use) before I opened it up. And whenidid there was very minimal wear to the bore and piston,I could have run it another 100hours. I change the oil every 5 hours on the dot or sooner, and change air filter every ride. Valves have been adjusted once haven't budged since. Oil and filter changes are easy. The platform is pretty well indistructible
@stavencapp

I'm sure you can wire a circuit in line to limit power consumption. Like a phone charger takes 120v then outputs 5v. Or like a laptop charger that outputs 18v. I once found a 12v DC to 5v DC box that I ran a wireless charger in my car off my cigarette lighter. So maybe run your headlight on 12v-10v, 8v-9v, or 5 amps to 3amps.

@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
The DRZ is in the same class as the WR250r, although a bit faster than the WR250r, it's heavy and not nearly as fast or as lightweight as a true 450cc dirt bike. The 2019 YZ450FX only weighs 256 lbs wet, compared to the WR250R at 295 lbs stock and the DRZ400 at 319 lbs stock. Also, the 2019 YZ450FX allows you tune the bike via wifi and smartphone, even though my ccu is not working right now. The YZ also has much better suspension than the WR and DRZ. The only drawback is YZ requires a shit ton of maintenance, but the YZ shits on my WR in every way except maintenance. The YZ makes my WR feel like a tank, YZ feels like a mountain bike in weight, so lightweight.

It has a 190 watt stator and goes to the battery, it's sufficient. However, I'm not willing to splice into any wiring. I only had a problem one time and that was the very first ride, battery wasn't fully charged and I kept getting off the bike and leaving the headlight on while talking in some motovlogs. However, I have adapted to the bike now and this striker speedo helps me stay on top of the battery. "Devin here at Baja Designs. The YZ450FX has a big 3 phase 190 watt stator in it. All of the power is going to be going to the stock battery. If you want to run that light you will have to route a harness under the seat and gas take to the battery to power that light because the FX doesn't have a lighting harness on it. you will be able to pull about 130 watts of that stock stator when you are in the higher RPMs. "
@mattcm32
@mattcm32 6 жыл бұрын
CycleCruza this whole video describes how the stator isn’t sufficient which is why you band-aided the problem by simply adding a voltage indicator so you know when it’s about to die, wire it up correctly with the right stator and it should work fine like every other streetbike that is designed to run a headlight...you don’t have this problem on your street bikes do you?

The YZ 450FX and the WR 450F are basically the same bike, it's just that the WR 450F has more factory options on it than the YZ 450FX does. The WR 450F does have a restrictive intake baffle and end cap on the exhaust silencer, both can be easily removed. To get "Full Power" with the YZ 450FX or WR 450F, you'll need to install the YZ 450F ECU.

YZFX = B35-8591A-01-00, WRF= B7R-8591A-10-00, YZF= BR9-8591A-00-00) In order to get the full power the F and FX have for the WR450F you will have to change air box, change the exhaust and get a FX unrestricted ecu (you can't get a YZ450F ecu because it's tuned for motocross and close ratio gearing). The ecu programming in the YZ450FX is different than the YZ450F in that it's tuned more for cross country racing, wide ratio gearing, etc but still "unrestricted." However, the WR450F has emissions restriction programming in it's ecu settings, the YZ450FX does not. '' RR'' = Using an R suffix usually means things have to do with either racing or replica. Even in the car industry, the R stands for pretty much the same thing, with the RS suffix being short for the German term Rennsport. Racing, that is. Therefore, RR is used for both Race Replica or even Race-Ready. BUT , CBR stands for city bike racing. if you remember the old honda cb is a honda city bike. RR stands for race replica, not race ready like most people think. PLUS , The Honda CBR600RR is a 599 cc (36.6 cu in) sport bike, part of the CBR series that was introduced by Honda in 2003 as a race replica version of Honda's CBR600F series. It won every Supersport World Championship title from 2002 to 2008, and again in 2010 and 2014. Honda's CBR600F series Nicknamed so because of its all-encompassing curvacious fairing. It looked odd, but nobody complained after they rode it. With more power and less weight than the other 600s available at the time the CBR - which stands for 'City Bike Racing' - was the first proper 600 supersport machine. sometimes the '' F '' stands for as a four banger. just thought i would put that in there.

Cruza dude, you got the wrong bike not the wrong Trail Tech speedo...The Trail Tech Vapor. Shows RPM which is important. I added a $2.00 volt meter. The problem is that the WR450 does not have a large enough stator like a DRZ. Never had a problem with leaving the lights on.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
You hear and feel RPM, no need for a RPM gauge. This is a YZ450FX, it actually has a 190 watt stator, which is plenty enough for the 26 watt led headlight. However, it's good to monitor the battery. When I ride with the light on the battery stays at 13.3 volts, which is fine.

@@CycleCruza if you wear ear plugs like me you can't always hear the RPM. 13.3V sound low for only running a 26 watt load. I am pulling around the same on my DRZ and still at 14.1V. You might want to disconnect the head light and check how many volts the stator is putting out..

I don't think it'll push start. Fuel injection or electronic ignition is a bear to get going without electricity. A carb bike with gravity fueling and points is EASY to roll start. I wish most of them had kept the kickstarter as a safety.

firm believer of using your ears. mainly because if your bike is going to break down you can usually hear it before it happens. as well as the other things you talked about. ALSO @ CRUZA you can get higher output stators. i would look into it if i were you. a good stator will allow the bike to run and power itself without a battery. my sportster will run with out a battery.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it has a 190 watt stator that send most of it's power to the battery. Baja Designs recommended hooking it up straight to the battery. However, it's nice to be able to monitor the battery. I only had one problem, the first time I rode it, I kept getting off the bike and turning the bike off but leaving the light on, I did not realize how much power was being drained when I did that. I have not had an issue since.

I'd catch a ticket in GA and NC if I rode w/o headlight and taillight burning day or night. Maybe TN too, but most modern street bikes won't cut the light anyway. I thought the multigauge you had was a bit disingenuous. It was reporting really high speeds you weren't visually going. I do ignore the tach most of the time. I shift by feel and sound, as riding a bike is as intimate as a riding a horse. I do check the tach more often in my car, as we're more insulated, but even then it is mostly by motor feel and strain or lug. Cars and bikes got along in the US for 70 years without tachs. Oh viewers, if you don't have a volt meter, just stick a $5 multimeter tester on your trickle charger plug or accessory plug every week as part of your bike check. 14V is great. 13.+ is good. 12.anything is BAD. Get a trickle charger.

U always talk about your Honda stator. When dirt bikes started to come with electric starters, fuel injection, fuel pumps, etc., batteries were used vs magnetos. Your modern Honda has an alternator with the rotor on the crank end and the stator secured around it on the block with regulator/rectifier. The battery is the buffer between the charging system AC and the electrical part DC. The alternator pumps out a lot of AC power but must be converted to DC power to store in the battery. With low idle or starting the battery is needed as the alternator not making enough juice.( rotor spinning in the stator) Once the engine has higher rpm the alternator charges the battery. The Honda has a smaller system cuz initially no headlight, horn, turn signals, USB for your phone etc. if you did not have fuel injection, lights, or electric starter you could have a magneto like dirt bikes up to the 1960’s with no battery. Most larger dirt bikes have batteries with an alternator and electric start.

Unless you start heavily modding (exhaust, flatslide carb, 440 kit, ECT.) a DRZ SM, they absolutely suck. I made the mistake of buying a new one years ago and regretted it almost instantly. Heavy, somewhat bulky feeling, absolutely no power in stock form, and very old outdated styling. Yz450fx=everything the drz wishes it was. Light, more than plenty of power, slim, fuel injected, better suspension and really better components in general. Everyone stresses too much over this whole "it's alot of maintenance" stuff too. Those service interval suggestions in the manual where written for someone who's riding this bike as it was originally designed for. Off-road your beating it up, constantly hammering the clutch, shifting way more and usually under much more load, you got the elements (dirt, dust, rocks, ECT) getting in places and wearing things out, ECT...street is nothing like that. Yes, it's definitely still more maintenance than any designated street bike, but you can most definitely push those service intervals out some and be more than fine as long as you keep and eye on things and use quality parts and oil when servicing. The headlight issue is a bit concerning though, as I'm about to pick up a 450fx to sumo myself😬

I have a Restart Battery which is even better, the battery never goes fully dead, it always leaves enough power to start the bike, however, you have to press a button on the battery for power to restart the battery. The ONLY reason I got stranded is because I forgot to bring my tool to remove the seat to get to the battery. However, they are making a remote switch for the battery. Btw here is the lithium ion battery (has double the capacity of the stock battery): cyclecruza.com/mymc

Still nothing like having a kick starter. The button thing is a gimmick really. All it does is segregate part of the battery capacity giving you enough to turn the engine over a few more times. I've had nothing but problems with lithium batteries on dirt bikes. I use a standard gelbattery and it NEVER goes dead. They are fine on sport bikes, but really is rather have more capacity thansave afew pounds weight

Man, honestly, you're the reason I bought a bike. But it seems like the more you learn and do, the worse the advice you give. Can someone get by without a RPM guage? Sure. But every bike feels and sounds different. Yamaha, for instance, doesn't really ever feel redlined to me. It helps to know your RPMs, bro. You're not responsible for our bikes, but you have to know that your opinion on stuff like this can cost some of your less knowledgeable followers money and time and maybe their safety. Just calm down with that silly haphazard advice, bro, if you don't mind.

Really man? If a person doesn't have enough common sense to realize this is just one man on KZbin giving his OPINION on the matter and not a rule or law they have to abide by, I'm not sure they have the mental capacity to be riding a motorcycle 😂 And sorry, but if you can't safely ride a motorcycle without an RPM gauge, you need to sell your bike and go get an automatic Prius. If you can't tell when you redline, you got a serious problem. Lol

As a new rider, I was discouraged my bike didn't have a gear indicator. After a couple years riding I don't miss it that much, but still on occasion find myself struggling to find the proper gear around intersections and curves after coming out of 5th or 6th. Hit 3rd and I want 2nd. Hit 2nd and I want 3rd.. Easy to correct, but still a pain in the ass sometimes.
