Here is my DIY take on the Japanese-style tool box. It is pretty simple with just one 8 foot 1 x 10 needed.
Cutlist:
A) 1 @ 15 x 9 1/4 inches (bottom)
B) 2 @ 15 x 6 inches (long sides)
C) 2 @ 9 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (short sides)
D) 2 @ 10 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches (top sides)
E) 1 @ 10 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches (lid side)
F) 1 @ 10 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches (wedge & wedge fitting, cut in the middle at an angle)
G) 1 @ 9 1/4 x 11 inches (lid)
H) 2 @ 2 x 9 1/4 inches (handles)
F) 2 @ 4 1/2 X 2 1 4 inches (feet)

Great post. I made one very much likes yours two weeks ago but have not added the finish yet and found the two-tone look of your to be a really good idea. I had to go back to plane the sides of the top door as it had become difficult to open. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Linn, you did a wonderful job showing us how to build this storage box. That's a neat idea on a no hinge lid. I'll remember this technique when I'm in a box building mood. Something I may experiment with, is setting the bandsaw table at some degree angle, when creating the curve in the handles. That way, you create a curved French Cleat for you fingers to grip more easily. The color scheme you choose, is perfect. Thanks for sharing and have a great week, Briz

I made one with poplar boards and used recycled screws to fasten them. I once read the original Japanese wood workers made their tool boxes with what they had on hand. So in the spirit of these craftsmen I used recycled screws because I had some. Works for me.

This box is super cool, Linn!! I agree that you actually don't need that many screws to secure the pieces together but those plugs end up being the very pleasing points of accent, and the rope matches the plugs very well. I love the design... so much that I may be changing my mind about the design on two benches that I plan on building... Hmm. They will be storage benches with wheels... without hinges... I like that : ) Thanks for sharing : )

Linn that looks fantastic! I really love the contrast between the stained material and the unstained. The grey you choose gives it an aged look. The unstained looks like a old repair. I don't know if that was the look you was going for or not. But either way it does look fantastic. I think that August would really enjoy having it as his first tool box. You could even make him some wooden tools for it. That might even be a really cool video. Keep up the great work and give August a hug for me. Thanks for sharing

I would use two rope handles and not rely on balancing the box depending on center of gravity. You don't need glue for those tight fitting plugs. The wedge lock is cool and that table saw side table with storage is SUPER cool, never seen anything like that. All in all, very nice project, thanks for sharing.

Nice! Just a thought on the plugs. If there was a way to round one end (bullet shaped), then you could leave them protruding a bit and not have to sand them flush. No need to re-stain. Think it might look nice that way too.

I like your red door and your REALLY fast with the mallet :). I agree the grey looks good with the natural wood and the extra plugs was a great idea. Good job! The only thing I don't like is the wood wedge. I would try something different next time for locking in the top. .

The box looks so cool. I especially the love the choice of the contrasting colors. I was just thinking that - although I love the design-- if you'd ever like to actually carry it around a bit longer, the rope might be a little uncomfortable. But then you could always wrap it in leather or sth. I really enjoy the vlog-y style of editing in this video. Super relaxing. Keep up the good work!
