I'm mid '50s and daily driven one of these for 5 years. It's such fun and even in the urban situation it makes the commute more enjoyable. I even look forward to getting stopped at lights and navigating roundabouts. Best thing though, when you take it on a road trip: the seats are so comfortable you can be in there all day and get no backaches; it will cruise all day on the German highways at 100mph+ and very stable; great fun in the mountains and on the last trip there was space with the seats folded for 2 people's luggage and six 12 bottle cases of wine (try doing that in an MX-5/Miata). Such fun, such versatility.

Owned a 2013 86 for the past 4 years. 140k km on the clock. No one talks about how reliable it is. I live in Dubai with extremely hot weather and the car has had no issues thus far. Slow in straight line but keep it in the high rev band on a twisty road with stickier tires, no one will ever say it's slow.

I've had mine for seven years in Qatar. Only problem I've had is that my head unit developed a severe ghost touch problem recently. Can't just disconnect the digitizer and use a mouse because then it does a soft reboot about once a minute, very weird. I was wondering if they sold them with the same head unit where you are, model is EL-827C-TMC1 made by E-Lead in Taiwan, Toyota part number PZ360-00105. I haven't seen another 86 with this head unit stock, even the dealer kept asking me over if was stock. The manual describes a different head unit, but it came with a 2nd manual just for the unit that describes this one. Dealer quoted me 13,000 QR for a replacement, which seems like way way too much. I'm probably going to replace it with a Joying head unit. No trouble with the drivetrain at all.

I felt a lot of the same things with this car. However, the car is a driving clinic. After a month or so the car changed the way I drove. Yeah, I wouldn't want to daily drive it in the city but mine isn't my only car, and I live about 340 kms from the nearest major city. Even the nearest set of traffic lights is about 250 km away and I'm five minutes away from some great roads. Also in total agreement about how the car improves you as a driver, if you're not on the ball with every shift, if your braking and steering isn't spot on it will punish you, not by sticking you into a tree by by making you slow. It's a momentum car, and if you can keep that momentum going by maintaining as much speed as you can through corners it IS actually a fast car on demanding roads. Accelerating fast in a straight line isn't it's forte, and it's worth remembering that sticking your foot to the floor and blasting away from the lights isn't the mark of a good driver, because any brain dead fool can do that.

I have a 2019 Toyota 86 as my daily. It's a very enjoyable daily, though I live in a Canadian city with practically zero traffic congestion to get stuck into. During the icy Canadian winter... it "accidentally" goes sideways with so much ease, and such amazing control while it's happening! Every other car I've had feels like they've had less turning control on ice going normally, than the 86 does sliding it's rear out! It's just an amazing car! But yeah... if you're not somewhere with curvy roads, dirt roads, or ice, then it won't be as easy to do (or acceptable to police) a lot of what makes the car so much fun. I'm pretty certain the torque dip is to help it be a better daily. It's in the casual driving RPM range you'd be in for general city driving, to which the torque dip adds fuel economy. On a race track, the 86 should never be in low enough RPM range to see it.

I daily a BRZ and absolutely love it. The only cons to me are blind spot visibility and stock tyres. Even on slightly damp road the rear can break traction while turning, but this taught me to be gentle and smooth on the accelerator, which I think is a good thing for learning to drive properly but may be bad for people who just want stability. Also I appreciate the fact that this car has gotten me to consistently heal-toe downshift on the road. I'd driven a few manual cars before and therefore could rev-match pretty well but never gotten into heel-toe. It's not that it's a necessary technique on the road, but I find heel-toe'ing makes it easier to race to an intersection and finish the turn before the lights turn red.

I've owned an 86 in BsAs Argentina, same thing. The car has the most exquisit handling/ chassis, but streets over here are straight and boring. I went to some mountain passes in Cordoba ( 500 miles from BsAs) and LOVED the car over there. The problem was the sour aftertaste when I returned tu BsAs, feeling that the car didn't excite me as much as it did on the mountains. On the trip, I was accompanied by two Megane 3 RS and got the opportunity to drive them hard. I was blown away by the poise of the chassis and the power (86 struggled too much with the altitude). I recently purchased a Renualt Sport Megane and I am very happy with it. Very sad to let the 86 go, I still love the car, but untill i have the wallet to have it as a second car (plus a supercharger kit) I wont be able to have one. automatics are gross bro
@BladezAndrew4 жыл бұрын
Tzinny Rafael why an auto? Manuals are cheaper, lighter, more efficient, send more hp to the wheels, also can rev higher (that’s why the manual one is rated 5hp more) are more reliable, and they’re infinitely more fun, teach you how to be a better driver, and sometimes even get you better fuel economy since high load low rpms is more fuel efficient than low load high rpms, but an auto doesn’t know that so if you give it a lot of throttle it’s automatically gonna downshift thinking you just want to accelerate. Seriously don’t get an auto, cause unless you live in like downtown LA or whatever. There’s literally no reason to choose an auto over a manual unless you’re missing an arm or a leg. It might be a little daunting at first if you don’t know how to drive stick. But like with anything it just takes a little practice. You might stall it a couple times, but then after that it’s golden

Most of these points are pretty accurate. However, I think the Automatic actually addresses a lot of these issues - you can still get the tail out, but it doesn't constantly remind you of the lack of power the way it's advertised in most reviews as it downshifts before the torque dip in 95% of situations. You'll be hard pressed to do a burnout with the auto...and that's just the thing, it'll launch off of a green light as fast as you can ever want...WITHOUT TIRE SPIN. Coming from a manual GTI that would spin out the front tires and torque steer, my day-to-day commute is way smoother and quicker off the line, and better yet I can actually turn through an intersection with just a smidgen more enthusiasm and that's fun. I got jaded with fast-launch stop light driving - it is a cop magnet, it draws a lot of bad attention, and it's super dangerous with anything that's not AWD. My GTI was a gen 4 though so it's not the same type of comparison...but FWD is FWD. I'm in Bay Area though and I don't think I'd want this car in Texas or anywhere without some low speed twists and turns. LA probably same, no good there.
@shouldigetit5 жыл бұрын
Great points, thank you for sharing! Also thank you for watching this video. Do you use it in manual with the paddles at all or is the automatic pretty smart in the various modes?
@conanthanoz195 жыл бұрын
@@shouldigetit 90% of the time I keep it in Sport Mode with Track Mode on as the manual mode is tedious for stop and go traffic. The manual mode is best on Skyline drive (curvy mountain road) where it's a constant fluctuation between 20-50 mph driving or if I'm feeling more aggressive on highway. From 0-30 the automatic is perfect and dartier than other cars...unless you're looking to do burnouts. I'd like to autocross the car soon - the G-meter is already maxed out for both left and right turns just from various low speed turns on commute.

@zvxcvxcz2 жыл бұрын
@@shouldigetit It has a really nice automatic, never had any issues with it having trouble picking a gear or anything like that. Shifts are crisp and quick. In the sport mode it favors the high end for power and does hang up there at times a bit longer than I would like after completing an acceleration per se before calming back down (you know, since I stop accelerating when I reach the speed limit). But my remedy to that is of course to go to a higher gear manually. Personally I tend to use the up/down signal via the shifter rather than the paddles, but I guess that's just what I prefer because the shifter is always in the same place while the throw on the wheel is enough that the paddle may not be in the same place relative to your hands mid-turn.

It is not about speed, although on the track I routinely post better laps than cars with 2 times the hp, nothing is faster around the bends, and that for me is the fun part. Straight line speed is great and if its torque you need to have fun at the drag strip, then get a v6 or v8 . BTW all coupes have the same door problem. And power isnt really a big deal, if you want power this isnt the car for you, that being said, it's still pushes your head back into the seat if you know how to drive it, I do it all the time. It's a fun car overall and definitely recommend it. Especially in a 6 speed M/T

Bro do u think someone whos 6 feet tall and chubby can get into this car? I drove a 91 nissan 240sx coupe for about 2 years and i fit well. It was about the same size as this one, it had back seats as well and i was able to drive sometimes with people in the back. Yeah i was all the way back but the people were comfortable in the back seats. Thank you.

@@marcosjuarez1490 Yes, 6 feet tall still has a bit of headroom and I have no trouble on the chubby side at 280 pounds. Getting in the back is more difficult, but the front is quite easy as long as you have the right technique for getting in and out. I would probably only take people in the back for pretty short trips.

There's no way that the Golf GTI Mk6 is more fun to drive than the Mazda MX-5 ND2 with its revised 181hp engine. You don't need to go sideways all the time in the MX-5 ND2 to have fun within legal speeds - just look at WindingRoadMagazine's POV videos or TheTopher's POV videos on that car. The only reason why you'd get the GTI is if you really need to haul more people and have more storage space for shopping. Get a model with a LSD, and add a Flyin Miata exhaust system and BBR Super 220 power upgrade to the ND2 and you'll have one of the most fun to drive brand new sportscars in 2019 with very cheap consumable costs (e.g. tyres, brakes and fuel) unlike Mustangs and camaros

To start, I definitely have a bias and love toward Mazda as I've owned two Miatas now and spent weeks with the ND models. However these are my reasons. 1) Since the Miata is closer to the ground and smaller overall the "buttdyno" makes it feel quicker and it is even easier to place on the road and control than the 86, although the 86 is also phenomenal for doing that. 2) You can experience more sensations with the top down. 3) It's even easier to park, do U-turns, etc. 4) The shifter feel is notcher and shorter throw than the 86.

I get the feeling the driver doesn't understand the concept of the BRZ. He's upset because it's a poor driver in Southern California rush hour. Um, what car is a good driver in rush hour? Seriously, you will hate the new Corvette sitting in traffic in LA, you will hate a BMW sitting in traffic, you will hate Jeep sitting in traffic, why use the BRZ as the point of context? Also, he's complaining about the rear end spinning out. Dude, it's what the car was designed to do. It's a natural drifter. Why do you think they put such small tires on it? By design this car is supposed to spin out at the rear end. It's virtually impossible to ever understeer this car, small tires, voila, it spins out. You hate this car in the rush hour commute and are worried about tickets from overzealous Cali cops on the spin out. This isn't a BRZ problem, this is a you and where you live problem. I live in the ninth largest city in the US and I can set my own work hours. I go to work at 5 am so I can drive my BRZ any damn way I want and my commute is always the highlight of my day. I love this car; it is my pride and joy. You clearly are mismatching the car with your needs. It's not the car's fault, it's yours.

This car ISN'T supposed to be fast and if you want it faster, just simply put in a turbo, not amazing but it'll do the job. Second of all, this car according to many people, is great fun to drive, handles well and doesn't break your bank. As for complaining about the back space, its possible to fit people in at least behind the passenger, because you can heighten the seat for more foot room. But again, its only for lower insurance purposes of those seats, great for shopping and IKEA stuff, when lowered.

I appreciate the time you put into your comment and agree with all of your points. However I would not use the word "simply" put in a turbo. my neighbor back in 2012 was the sales manager at a scion dealership and when i walked in and wanted to get a tC (2nd gen) he tried to talk me into the 86. i didnt know the car was almost 7 grand more...i just told him it didnt do it for me.( this was after he gaves me the keys for the test drive and let me have a go at it) it was such a lackluster experience i didn't even think twice about it. and mind you this was back when i was a 20 year old who was very easily convinced that something was "sporty"...i mean come on, i bought a tc2. years later i would drive friends 86's and still to this day i dont get the appeal. maybe when theyre like 8 or 9 grand i can see the value but holy hell they have a really bad reputation now with all the recalls related to bearing issues. i honestly feel really bad for someone when i see a temp plate on a new brz going down the road, i can't imagine spending what is basically 5th gen zl1 money on a fucking sub 200hp rwd subaru.

It’s a very niche car at best suited for canyons, mountains, and autocross events. Otherwise I wouldn’t buy it. I think the Hyundai Genesis Coupe would be better for me honestly.

I owned an 86 for a about a year and sold it for the exact same reasons. While I loved the design, the overall package didn't make it for me. Now quite happy with my Cooper S.

Door issue is real but pro tip: just take the seat all the way back before leaving the car, you'll have enough space. The other cars you mentioned that had the kick in the seat effect are turbo, this is not, so it is expectable. Just buy a turbo as it probably suits your style more, I guess, I daily drive an 86 and don't feel any of those problems you mentioned.
