It is so sweet to hear someone's confession about the Pink Floyd's 'Animals' being the favorite album, and not the ever so overrated 'Dark Side of the Moon'. As I'm getting older (I am 97 years old by the way, died some 5 years ago, so I am writing this comment from the Beyond since we do have internet in the afterlife as well), I am becoming more appreciative of Gilmour's solos, realizing that his brilliant guitar work was actually so integral to the sound of Pink Floyd. By the way, thanks for asking, I used to have my comfort albums, but the afterlife is so comforting that I don't need those albums anymore...

Great list. Animals is an album I have been going back to for decades and I don’t think that will ever change. Red is a heavy metal song that doesn’t know it’s a heavy metal song, but it’s absolutely phenomenal and I also think it’s the best King Crimson album and one I come back to a lot. Others for me would be Script for a Jester’s Tear by Marillion, Stupid Dream by Porcupine Tree and Heavy Horses by Jethro Tull.

"Since I Left You" by Avalanches- (legendary sampling and songcraft, transitions are sublime) "American Water" by Silver Jews (Berman's lyrics and Malkmus guitar playing make for great alt-country) "Clube da Esquina" by Clube da Esquina (a creative peak of socially conscious, contemporary Brazilian music that's just a beautiful listen) "Just Got Back From The Discomfort...We're Alright" by Brave Little Abacus (experimental and progressive emo that I personally love, not for everyone) "The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady" by Charles Mingus (classic jazz staple and the big band arrangements are both gritty and graceful) "Cheat Codes" by Danger Mouse and Black Thought (more recent east coast hip-hop, but the atmospheric production and lyrical deliveries are on-point) "Down Colorful Hill" by Red House Painters (Kozelek controversy notwithstanding, the heartfelt songwriting and melodies are woven seamlessly) "In The Land of Grey and Pink" by Caravan (a more underrated prog album that has one of my favorite songs ever ("Nine Feet Underground")) "Perfect from Now On" by Built to Spill (I just love the band's guitar production overall and this album of theirs is my favorite.) "Strange Times" by The Chameleons (Not a perfect post-punk album, but I think their experimentation with dream-pop elements was very influential)

"Comfort" is a bit different from favorite, isn't it? For some reason, I listen to Camel's 1st album often-- I don't think it's their best at all, but it's fun and the CD version sounds great on headphones. I'd also choose Brian Eno's *Before & After Science* & Los Lobos' *Kiko,* which may be their best & is certainly one of the best American rock albums ever. (I need to visit your Discord soon!)

I'm right with you with "by the way." Been a huge Chili Peppers fan since the late 80's and to me this is their best. Extremely under rated. While not as flashy as some of their catalog, it's the subtleties that make this album pop. Catchy as hell, but when deep listening the true brilliance can be heard! Great pick, & great list. Thanks!

Inspired by the Eurovision Song Contest (did not watch the final) I bought Vicky Leandros' album "Aprés Toi" from 1972 on Discogs. Not one weak song is on that album. There is also a new band in The Netherlands: Hiqpy. They have not released anything yet. They have a YT channel with just two songs, but there are some live perfomances as well on YT. When they release an EP or album, I am sure that will be by comfort album Also: Ray LaMontagne - Ouroboros. Meskerem Mees - Julius Oracle Sisters - Hydranism Nana Adjoa - Big Dreaming Ants Robin Kester - This Is Not A Democracy The Gathering - Nighttime Birds Beth Orton - Stolen Car Terry Callier - Occasional Rain

Animals, Meddle and Piper are the PF I go back too the most, with Animals admittedly at the top. I know the 2018 remix is divisive among fans, but as per the Beatles remixes, I just love having 2 versions of a brilliant album to choose to play, depending on my mood. Comfortably Numb aside, It's a shame that Gilmour rarely (if ever) returned to that vicious, visceral tone he got on the album, though he's still my favourite guitarist of all-time and the reason why I picked up the instrument. Lionheart and Never For Ever by Kate Bush are definitely 2 other comfort albums that always get me me good.

Your list is incredible, i loved it, my 10 comfort albums are - and ranked from least to most comforting. 10. my bloody valentine- loveleless- the atmosphere hits like nothing else. Its so kntricate and amazing. 9. Deftones- saturday nighr wrist- one ive come to love and its just that warm atmosphere that makes me love it more than pretty much any other deftones album, i just think overall its so strong, im not too huge on pink cellphone but its funny so ill let it slide, the rest of it is awesome. 8. Bicep- isles- just a really relaxing electronic release that i love hearing every time i listen to it, its so nice and always hits me in the feels. 7. Kate Bush- The Art of Dreaming- really relaxing and just like a comfort blanket to listen to. 6. Fred again...- actual life3- my favourite electronic album of recent years, every song is so comforting znd emotional to me, as well as being dancable and fun. Just a pure post lockdown jam that is about that feeling of finally being able to live again after isolation and an amazing wrap up to the actual life series. 5. Jamie XX- in colour- my favourite modern electronic album, the emotional moments just hit like in seesaw and strangers in a room nd the hopeful moments like good times are so fun, every song is full of colour and joy, even at the dark times which is a real testament to that title. 4. Paramore after laughter- what i find to be the best album using the happy songs with sad lyrics concept, i just love the contraast that songs like hard times and fake happy offer, as well as pool, 26 and tell me how being less fun and more somber and emotional, this one really gets me in the feels and yet its one ive been coming back to for comfort since it came out. Its helped me from early teens and adolescence all the way to adulthood which is really crazy to think about. But i do love it so much. 3. The weeknd- dawn fm- this one has always comforted me, its the immersive soundscape that i love and just feel really wins me over as well as the dark themes the album can have, it has a lot of light to it too but it definitely feels darker at times. It flows so nicely as an album, it is really tight and the songs and interludes do such a good job at telling a narrative of the radio show in purgatory. As well as this, swedish house mafia have inclusions on this album and they provide some of the most tasteful tracks on it, how can i make you love me is incredibly enticing and has beautiful synthwork, not every track stands out but all flow amazingly well together and that consistency and huge production the album has is why it is so high here, i am drawn to immersion and atmosphere, as well as production heavy songs and i love how this album does this so well. 2. Neck deep- lifes not out to get you- this album throughout my late teens and early teens was the comfort blanket i needed, but when i did embrace it and its message it just felt good, as ateen i did love pop punk and now im not as huge on it but this albums messaging and energy is on point, and its hopeful insight into dealing with hardship and trauma and trying to get through it is something ive needed multiple times and im glad that I could listen to it and take on its message as a mantle, gold steps is definitely my favourite pop punk song for its lyrical content, i dont think anything comes close to it. 1. Chvrches- every open eye- just the most relaxing and upbeat synth pop album i have ever heard and i love every second of it, it has the bangers such as leave a trce and clearest blue but it has emotional moments like high enougn to carry you over which i really gravitated towards in lockdown, just really solid. Honourable mention is queen of the stone age's songs for the deaf, like dawn fm this is one that priortises album flow rather than standout moments and those albums which olay out like a journey or hour long radio show really do appeal to me. The band also kill it with riffs and bonkers interludes to add to the theme, the music is incredible.

Love Supertramp and Traffic as well. Though I personally prefer "Crime of the Century" because I really like Davies' work on there. Interesting list, and I appreciate your descriptions - even of the albums I know well. Yeah, Björk… Listening to her, it’s like: this is Björk’s world, we just live in it! Since you mentioned that you enjoy trip-hop, have you heard the new Beth Gibbons album, “Lives Outgrown?” It still has some of that Portishead vibe, but quieter, more intimate, yet rich and complex. Progressive, without being “Prog.”

I just listened to this. What a fucking banger album. Man it's a lot to digest. A commenter on yt summed it up perfectly. "Sounds like Zappa and Jaco joined Fates Warning, took acid and recorded the best prog metal ever!"

What albums will I repeat-listen end to end over and over, based on what I actually do, rather than what I'd like to say I do? A Trick Of The Tail - Genesis. Lionheart - Kate Bush. Nashville Skyline - Bob Dylan. Silk Degrees - Boz Scaggs. The Turn Of A Friendly Card - Alan Parsons Project. In The Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra. Songs For The Deaf - QOTSA. Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen. On The Beach - Neil Young. Guilty - Barbra Streisand.

Agree about Nursery Cryme, a true classic. Have you given Procol Harmum a full listen? Please give a repeated hearing to 'Shine on Brightly' through 'Home'. Some really moving songs there.

Probably one of the best singer-songwriter albums ever released. His dad was pretty good, too. Though I've heard they didn't have a great relationship.

Love Wishbone Ash. Guitar work is phenomenal. Their work is on par with the American contemporaries, perhaps the Allman Brothers and CSNY?
