Lithium based batteries are not supposed to be charged below freezing point (0"C) with a current exceeding 0.1 capacity. Teslas can do this thanks to the battery heating feature. But the car had a low battery charge, so the battery heating switched off to save the battery from a fatal depletion. Another example of a car being smarter than the user.

Yes, I’ve read something similar, the Tesla Supercharger voltage is too high so they don’t charge fast until they get to a certain temperature to ensure there is no damage to the battery. The main thing with these EV’s is that you cannot just get up and go in any condition like ICE. You need to plan ahead for a number of scenarios, and although you would do the same for ICE it’s a different technology. Sure ICE needs to warm up but if they have synthetic oil you can go within 30 seconds in extreme cold temperatures. My car will warm up to operating temperature in about 4 minutes even in -20 Celsius, with a Tesla you might not even be able to start it, so you need to factor these things in to your lifestyle as an EV Owner I think
@gmat25452 жыл бұрын
Not the case, I just had the same exact problem minus the charge level and I was at 50%. Appears to be a problem with the superchargers themselves. I have to stay charged up for work so I had to drive 30 km to a slower charger in order to get topped up. There are 8 stalls outside of Calgary that have multiple super chargers not working. Tesla needs to fix this fast as they are the only super chargers within an hour’s drive round trip.
@zbyszanna2 жыл бұрын
@@gmat2545 what's not the case? The issue here was battery being cold and having to get warmer in order to actually start charging. The video doesn't say it was because of the low state of charge, but because of the temperature, so what exactly are your disagreeing here with? If you want to charge fast in cold temperatures make sure to precondition the battery in advance (by selecting the supercharger as the destination in the navigation screen). It will still take a while to precondition it, but at least you will spend most of the time of not all driving.
@zbyszanna2 жыл бұрын
Still the car could message this better. It's not intuitive at all that this is happening so if there is no information on the screen, you will think something's wrong. I don't know if anything changed in this regard in the last year, who knows, they update their cars all the time.
@cbast3 жыл бұрын
The Supercharger would’ve worked the first time. You just had to give it more time. I’ve seen this happen before. The display doesn’t show energy that is being used by the car for heating purposes. Since you weren’t able to precondition the battery because of how low it was, it had to do that at the Supercharger. Given a little more time, it would’ve reached the ideal temperature, and it would’ve started charging. However, Tesla should release an update that makes that a little more clear with a notification on the screen of some sort.

@Arpedk3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, you should just have left it at the supercharger for longer. When your battery is that cold the car spends 7 kW of heat to heat up the battery. I would probably take 5-10 minutes for the battery to meet a temperature which would give you juice. The only reason it did charge of AC right away is that it would never reach enough heat on AC and it wanted to give you some range as it was plugged in. In this case I believe the DC charging would be better for the battery. In the cold we always charge the car right away when the battery is warm, if we would start it at night it would spend 15-30 minutes heating up the battery before charging.

@@teslapeg It would still be 20 minutes in the winter if you charge with a hot battery after a long road trip and preconditioned the battery. Charging lithium ion batteries in negative degrees is the worst you can do with the battery because it causes lithium plating on the anode. When I arrived at the supercharger my battery was at 16%. It would NOT charge. I tried moving stalls, restarting the computer, using the trickle charger, trying a close by J1772, contacting Tesla (only heard useless recordings, no real people). Now it's midnight and I'm completely stuck in a tiny little mountain town where I don't know anyone. I feel so discouraged. Tow truck or 911 will save me eventually. 😥 Send prayers! It goes by #+letter, like in 1A->1B, 2A->2B ...etc. also since they are 150kw .. IF you did have a stall-mate it'd drop to 75kw (1/2). Good luck with your next one.

@@dfgriggs remember that I lived in Winnipeg for 25 years and have owned BEVs for 6 years (I currently own 2) and you have likely done neither. You'd have to be insane to own a BEV in Winnipeg (either that or you just want a golf cart level toy).

That is extremely odd! I remember one minus 30 degree day in New Hampshire...without wind chill. My 8 year old Chevy with 150,000 miles.... fired right up and I drove 300 miles to a gas station to fill up. Then continued on without a hitch to the warmer climes of Florida. Good thing I couldn't afford a tesla at the time.

Good grief. I'll stay with a gas car until they have the 35 things you have to do to your battery worked out. Empty and full that's all it needs to be. Not this range doesn't equal this range today or the next day. preconditioning through my app every time I go out and want to use my car? Pass
@teslapeg3 жыл бұрын
The newer model shows significant improvement. After all, these cars got a proper introduction after Tesla started making them. Gas cars have been here way longer than electric so it’s only fit to say they have a few advantages. But those advantages won’t last long as EVs are developing very fast
@johngordon46243 жыл бұрын
I gotta agree with u there i dont see how electric cars can overcome these inherent challenges. Range loss and preheating during winter make it impractical as a daily driver in freezing winter. Also if you get stuck its not like you can bring a separate battery along with you to get you going to ur destination. It would be just enough to get to ur next charging station. With ice engines you can just carry around extra fuel in a jerry can even if nearest gas station is far away. It would be interesting to see how much faster fast these batteries deplete over the years of use.

Yeah let's manage the "poor little car" after paying 40/50k.... Wtf?! I changed many cars on my life (with termal engine) and didn't had any problems, and where I live was even - 25° C... And don't make me telling you that your "awesome green car" has lithium batteries and for excavation of 1 ton of lithium they product 12 ton of carbon dioxide, let's not forget that batteries need also cobalt etc... Your "awesome free pollution" energy, most of it in fact is produced by nuclear, also burning coal, oil (and is producing carbon dioxide).... Don't forget that batteries have 8 years guarantee,after that you pretty much should change it. Where they go because no one is recycling them because they don't have industry for it, and they know it's pretty dangerous to mess with lithium batteries, for ex on much heat they simply explode...Don't believe?! Ask any electric car manufacturer! And are more to say it but already I know a lot people's will start replying shit so....

EV vehicles are ok in places like California but in Canadian winters this is not ideal. This is just another example of it. Calling Tesla was also not helpful at all. Range anxiety, car handles malfuntioning, quality control issues, battery depletion from just sitting there are all issues that you don't have with gas vehicles. I think eventually EV will be the future but they still have a long way to go.

Thanks for the video! I will say though you are being much too hard on yourself with this situation. This isn't "your fault", it's a bad design from Tesla. There was no status screen, indicator saying that the battery needed to be preconditioned and just wait etc. You did what any user would do- drove to the charging station and plugged it in before the battery died. That should be all you need to do and it should be obvious if the charger is working. It should simply just work. People pay $80K for a car and you need to have all these tips and tricks for basic usage and Tesla support isn't open on Sundays? That's not a good experience, is it? I live in Minneapolis and while it doesn't get as cold as it does in Winnipeg, situations like this and the 40% loss in battery range during the cold are why I want to get a PHEV especially when I'm in a rural area hunting and no chargers are in sight. I can cut my gas usage in half or 75% perhaps commuting on electric but if I plan on making a few stops after work to see a movie or meet a friend for dinner before I head home in the winter or go out hunting I won't get stranded and still have a full tank of gas.
