A video of my thin lined carving process! I had to speed up a bit of it to stay within time 🥲 I may post a longer extended version on KZbin at some point. It was a lot tougher to video this than I had expected! I want to mention that I don't normally allow carvings to fall on the floor! I always carve into a bowl to prevent dusty clay messes. It was just too difficult while videoing 😳 so don't @ me 😂😵
Carving tool: Diamond Core P1 Curved V Tip with added XL Foam Grip (egg shape)
Clay: Kentuck Mudworks' Brown Bear stoneware

what a beautifully carved piece! may I ask , at what point after so many hours drying do you begin to carve?
@KaiCeramicsOfficial
@KaiCeramicsOfficial Жыл бұрын
Thank you 💜 I usually like carving during the wetter side of leatherhard. It's hard to put an exact number of hours on drying time, since everyone's environment is different and thickness and whatnot. Usually once the piece is not sticky and leaving fingerprints and not as maliable when handling it. If it's crunchy, it's too dry! I hope this helps 😊

What if you filled that with different colored slips and then sanded it that would be amazing edit: also I've never seen that grip for a tool before where did you get it? That looks incredibly useful especially for my poor muscle control/ weakness
@KaiCeramicsOfficial
@KaiCeramicsOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Slips could be fun with carving! For now, I really like how my glazes break over the texture. The grip is from Diamond Core Tools! It is sold separately, so you dont have to buy the tool.
@rebeccasmith4057
@rebeccasmith4057 2 жыл бұрын
@@KaiCeramicsOfficial yeah I checked them out it's super nice! The pooling is gorgeous. My second thought was worry about my hands if I were to hold it, are those peaks sharp after firing or does the glaze break the difference in the levels? Either way it's beautiful work and I'd love to see some crystalline glaze on there. And thank you for the grip recommendation! Good to know it can fit on most tools. Edit: I forgot to provide context, my hands are very sensitive due to health issues so my concern about it being sharp isnt a criticism but a concern haha
@KaiCeramicsOfficial
@KaiCeramicsOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
@@rebeccasmith4057 I always soften down any harsh edges (including the feet) so that there is no chance of that. As for my thin lined carving, I sponge the tops of the crisp lines down (I think I show it in the video with a brush? Not sure 😅) so that they are not sharp even before glazing. After glazing, they are quite dull to the touch. You can still feel the texture, but it is not harsh. I try my best to make sure not to hurt anyone with my work!
@rebeccasmith4057
@rebeccasmith4057 2 жыл бұрын
@@KaiCeramicsOfficial I use a paint brush typically bc it helps me be more precise in softening edges. I can be heavy handed with a sponge and tend to mess up my lines and shapes so the paint brush prevents that. I find your work very enchanting, especially after glazing. keep it up!
