@@Based_Main_Character time as a concept literally isn't "arbitrary" at all, that's like saying gravity or magnetism are "arbitrary concepts." using one particular measure of time over another is what's arbitrary and it's not dependent on "your distance from your local star" because plenty of measures of time have nothing to do with it e.g. a day, a lunar month or a jiffy

Just this past year, I've started playing Fallout 3 and Oblivion, after thousands of hours in Fallout 4 and Skyrim. My biggest takeaway has been that the old games were simply more interesting. Things are complicated. You get the companion wheel to set a companion's following distance. Bits are intricate. The newer games have held my attention for thousands of hours, don't get me wrong, but I am *very* sympathetic to anyone who loves the earlier games. There's so much there to love. If someone fiddles with Oblivion, I would worry about losing that intricacy, and gaining shinier graphics. And that's not a trade I'd find compelling.

We just love the universe and enjoy playing it and wanted to make it feel a bit newer. Nothing else is changing aside from Voice overs instead of reading and updating all models textures and a few other things but the core game and what makes morrowind what it is will always stay the same. No compatition in the teams at all. Just nerds wanting to make something cool others might find cool too. @@MannElite It’s almost like people have different opinions on what’s fun! Wow! 🤯 what a radical idea. People complain about Starfield having repetitive POI, gates are even worse than the repetitive POI in Starfield. My point is, Oblivion gates are frequently forced upon the player, which as a mechanic, is counter to the idea of a ‘choose what you want to do’ open world RPG. If you could specifically go to an afflicted region where you will get Oblivion gates if you want them, that’s good open world game design. Having gates spawn absolutely everywhere, is bad design because it forces all players to interact with them, even players who find them boring and repetitive. Or better yet, make the gates less repetitive and boring. I literally don’t care about how good the loot is if every gate is exactly the same.

I know that there are more but the Spyro trilogy comes to mind in the remake/remaster field. The games are functionally a remaster as they built the games to be the same as before but, rebuilding them from the ground up allowed them to radically improve the visuals and give plenty of quality of life upgrades. It isn't perfect, no system is, but it's a great way to do a rekame that isn't 100% reliant on nostalgia but also doesn't abandon it.

I played Oblivion a lot, it was the game which got me interested in mods (specially the posers, which people use to make cool screenshots). - One thing I can see they expand or add is companions akin to what Skyrim and Starfield have, because in Oblivion, while you could get followers, they were quite limited. - Another thing they can add or work is the cut content. - I wonder if they would work on the world itself, like expanding cities and so on, at the time, I remember people complaining that the Imperial City was quite small. But I guess a lot depend on what angle the remake will use. - I wonder the remake could be useful for Bethesda to test ideas for using in the next ES.

I am somewhat glad they are going the remake route. There were two "has potential" categories for me. The first would have been a remaster of Oblivion into a modernized creation engine. It was my theory a while back that Bethesda would likely try to update all of their IPs into the same core game engine - so star field, fallout, and elder scrolls would all share literally the same engine with better file and script parsing. In this case, some asset/visual updates and ability to utilize features past and present in the engine would make for a great mod platform, even if oblivion has largely just been re-skinned and dropped into a much more capable engine. The second scenario is a full blown remake where we have the potential to see a re-envisioning of Oblivion and its systems/gameplay - which is a bit more risky in terms of choices, but if we are not running on the gamebrio/constructor/creation engine, then there is a lot of room for things to get interesting, as most modern games don't really seem to try and make an interactive world of real-ish people, but instead just create the sense of being in a very crowded place where very little matters. A remake which takes a shot at making a modern crowd system populated with individual NPCs within the world would be interesting. That may be asking a bit much - but, again, I would respect the effort to try it. Even just porting most of Oblivion into something like the Unreal engine would be a significant boon to the modding community - assuming it migrates almost fully away from using the gamebrio engine. I suspect, if they are going with alternate hit animations and reactions, that they will be migrating away from the gamebrio/creation engine almost completely. It is screwy to get two different engines to negotiate visuals and collision, and by time you get done fussing with getting things to act right between the two engines, you would be time and effort ahead to just code a parser to load the original assets into the UE5 engine.... And if you are going to be updating the assets, anyway - just as well to write a system to load in the updated assets into a UE5 world space according to their original layout and an import system for the scripts, triggers, etc. There's no real advantage to trying to float the visuals in a UE5 renderer and trying to re-code modern kinematics into an old engine. That... Or you are trying to fuss with translating oblivion's assets into creation - which is not as bad, but while resolving bugs in that translation, you also have to fuss with anything more you want to add plus adding a UE5 renderer ... Just makes more sense to bite the bullet and rewrite the game into UE5 unless there is some fundamental limitation of UE5 that prevents it from being able to do this, but ARMA's Real Virtuality has been capable of stuff like this for some time and a number of games using UE4 and 5 seem to be very close to being able to run similar types of large simulations. So, if they are doing UE5 at all, it makes more sense to just port everything into UE5 and script it to run accordingly. Especially if they have taken this long on it.

Yep. Morrowind ‘need’s a remake much more. The problem is, the 2nd comment, they’d definitely take out all kinds of things that make Morrowind dark, adult and interesting.. including the more bizarre/spicy lore (which is the best part imo), and any reference to forced servitude, which these days is something nobody can talk about even though it was a real thing that existed in the past (and if you consider economic servitude, still kind of does). AAA games these days are made for kids, and any truly dark or difficult content is considered ‘too controversial’ for release, under fear of Twitter drama.

It’s funny that I was all interested in a remake of Oblivion, but in your discussion about what a remake could do, it made me realize I want a remaster instead. Oblivion is this interesting case where it was an epic open world RPG before developers had quite figured out how to do epic open world RPGs, and that’s what gives it its charm. I don’t think any open world RPG is doing radiant NPCs like Oblivion did. They’ve sacrificed that design so they can have huge cities with huge crowds. And while that’s impressive and exciting, it’s not Oblivion. I would really love a modern version of Oblivion that fixes the level scaling, adds workshop support, and makes the whole game a bit easier to get into without losing the janky appeal of the original game. Oblivion isn't Oblivion without Gamebryo/Creation engine. Radiant AI is a good example, but the engine in general feels purpose built for interacting with and exploring the environment. It can be very janky and comes with a lot of technical limitations like Starfield felt particularly affected by, but it does work well for the open world rpg formula. I can't imagine a remake would use the same engine given that wouldn't be far from a mod - so UE5 seems most likely, and I don't think that would feel even vaguely like Oblivion.

They need to leave the radiant ai alone though... it's stupid but as you say it's exactly what gave it it's charm. I missed that silliness in Skyrim. Almost every year in the autumn period, I replay Oblivion (with some QoL mods). 2025 is going to be a busy Oblivion year for me: Skyblivion and the remake! A remake makes sense, the game is not a great performer on modern day PC hardware, because of it's 32 bits engine limitations. The amount of atrocious pop in, random crashes - even with optimization mods - break the immersion. The game has bad controller support on PC too and even tinkering with Steam input doesn't make it good enough IMHO. Another reason why a remake makes sense is that the game is stuck on Playstation 3. Would be great if it was playable again on modern day Playstations! ...and Xbox too, of course. Can't wait to get my hand on Skyblivion and the Oblivion remake!

I think if they're going to fully remake the game, they should make Oblivion as a concept, story and mechanics as if it was a new game made today. So they would have a larger Imperial city and filled with new stuff that is in the spirit of Oblivion but different. We already have Oblivion 1 if we want pure nostalgia. I think a remake should be Oblivion 2.0--like A Song of Ice and Fire Novels compared to Game of Thrones TV Show, it's the same story but different storytelling, expression and focus.

I'm a bit confused by the "remake vs Skyblivion" angle - because Skyblivion is a remake. It's a complete conversion of Oblivion from the ground-up in Skyrim's engine, and nearly every asset but voice lines have been remade from scratch. Models, textures, lighting, weather, code, and nearly everything else has been reimagined by the volunteer team. There's even new music, UI elements, and levelling systems. For the most part, it won't even play like Oblivion. And I won't be surprised if, similar to another total conversion mod called Enderal, stores like GOG offered Skyblivion all by itself for owners of Skyrim. Bethesda itself is aware of the project and has communicated with them about it, concerning various guidelines to follow. If the discussion was instead, an official remake versus a modded remake - then that's a conversation that opens the door to console ports, physical copies, separate reviews, and so-forth. More importantly, Skyblivion is specifically a vision of 2006 Oblivion made in the Skyrim engine. An official remake could take a different angle, and instead try to create a more different vision of Cyrodiil.

If the leaks are accurate Bethesda aren't even the ones making it they outsourced it to another studio. Fixing the broken leveling system and making combat have more oomph I think most would be happy about. More radical changes like changing Cyrodiil to a jungle, as the province was described as such in previous games, would likely please old heads but piss off people who loved Oblivion's aesthetic. I know I'd personally be disappointed if the NPCs didn't come off as the schizophrenic weirdos that bark random lines at you and each other their behavior in the original game is iconic and has a unique charm all of its own. Some people are concerned that Skyblivion might be given a cease and desist order which so close to the finish line would be a huge slap in the face to all the people who've worked on it and the modding community as a whole even with Bethesda acting more and more like the typical greedy corporation as the years have passed I heavily doubt they'd do something so tone deaf and stupid, Microsoft though I could see doing it hopefully these concerns are nothing but fear mongering.

10:50 I think it's fine, when it comes to remakes there are two ends to the spectrum, on one end there are faithful remakes and on the other there are the reimaginings. Reimagined remakes are not about making the game again as it originally was, these are actually my preferred type of remake. To take Resident Evil as an example, the RE1 remake is more of a faithful remake, RE4 remake is more of a reimagining.

I would argue GSC gameworld supports modders the same, if not more than Bethesda. Hell, they released the entire engine and assets to the stalker games online when they shut down years ago, which is why we have the free to play Anomaly and Gamma mods which incorporate all 3 games for free, plus a bunch of mods. It's how I got into Stalker, and they already said that they're going to release mod tools sometime later this year.

Oblivion was my 2nd Bethesda game, and yeah, my 2nd favorite Bethesda RPG behind Morrowind, but given how Bethesda is today, and how much it's changed over the years, I'd rather see them remake Oblivion than Morrowind. I think Oblivion is perfect for a remake. It would benefit tremendously from modern systems having enough RAM to have open towns & more people, which it sorely needed back in the day. It can't be understated how important it is for it to still be Oblivion, though. As you say, it's got a very unique vibe - I think of Havok engine oddities & tons of BLOOM, but there's more there than just aesthetics. Cyrodiil is a fitting world for them to go back to. They seem more comfortable in settings with more generic & universal presentation, which Cyrodiil 'now' clearly is. They've gotten super enthusiastic about procedural generation, and while I'm at best ambivalent about how they've done it recently, I think Oblivion gates are one place that it'd be actually fitting to have large, procedurally generated areas meant to be done on a repeated basis. It'd be cool to see size & complexity scale with difficulty level or main plot progression, but I realize this is probably just a pipe dream so I'll leave this bit there. RE:Leveling - I'd like to see them try to re-implement Oblivion's/Morrowind's progression system, just without the level scaling, and working without all the jank. There's a mod (NGC IIRC) that basically did it perfectly, imo. In vanilla, you already gain "skill xp" every time you did something. It made it so that you'd also gain "attribute xp", along with it. So, every once in a while, when your Archery skill went up, your Agility would go up, too. Each skill could give attribute xp to multiple attributes, so Archery would mostly benefit Agility, but to a lesser degree Strength and Speed, too. Every X amount of attribute levels, you'd go up in character level. So, everything was handled behind the scenes, but it preserved the whole paradigm that they were originally shooting for. Radiant AI seems like the most questionable game system to try to re-make. I honestly don't think they'll do it justice, just like how it kinda never really lived up to the hype in the original game. I'd want them to go big or go home, so I think they should just scrap it, honestly. Just setting NPC scheduled movements, maybe home>work>3rd space>home or something would be fine, and close enough to the original implementation for me.

Also, am I forgetting that Skyblivion requires you to provide proof of purchase for Oblivion? Either way it seems like both Skyblivion and the Remake are profit opportunities. Plus, like Mortym said, a full-game release will always be more popular and widespread just due to the fact that it has the backing of a publisher. And not just any publisher - Microsoft. So there’s little room to be worried that profit margins won’t be reached because a mod for Skyrim pulls away too many potential customers

Oblivion minus that distinct feeling of endearing charm, surreal dialogue interactions, comical character creation & (unintentional) comedy gold wouldn't work nearly as well for the long-term replay value. On a different note, can't improve either on an already perfect OST by Jeremy Soule. Above all, it's been over a decade since the latest TES title, not really looking forward for an even longer wait due to an remake (admittedly, might be wishful thinking to expect the same standard of previous titles being held with current day Bethesda). Curious if the remake will already include the expansion pack The Shivering Isles as well (classic).

With anything like this there are always going to be people saying the original was better and for people who feel that the original is going nowhere and will still be there for those who enjoy it. Having played it about a year ago I did notice some real annoyances in it so I won't be getting too doe-eyed about the original game. I loved it at the time but it hasn't dated all that well particularly the dungeons that are very samey compared to Skyrim. I don't really see how Bethesda could change them to be more unique which is a bot of a shame. A new questline would be good to take advantage of the new stuff.

I have started playing The Witcher series in preparation for the The Witcher IV and it is a daunting task as each game is massive RPG and can be occassionally difficult and feel clunky. I have played Skyrim for 180 hours but only reached level 37 or so I believe and also dabbled with Fallout 3 and a little bit of morrowind. Want to clear all 3 series eventually. Skyrim is the first ARPG I played so it is difficult to back to old school stuff. I know Elder Scrolls VI is coming out probably sooner than The Witcher IV and GTA VI will take most of my time at the end of the year.
