That Tomorrow interview is legendary. Peter was laughing bc ace was hilarious. Paul let loose a few times during that interview but daddy gene kept him in check. My absolute fav line in that entire interview is when ace makes a joke and Peter says "you'll suffer in the dressing room for that one". Really told a story right there.

I was at a Q&A with Bill Aucoin in 1998, and he talked about that interview. He said Ace HATED doing pre-interviews, and after the pre-interview, Tom Snyder's people told him that Paul & Gene were the leaders and would do most of the talking, Peter would talk if asked a question, but Ace wouldn't talk. The makeup was cool nostalgia for the reunion but it really should have come back off after that tour. They never stopped pretending it's 1977. Even with Ace & Peter gone again it hasn't stopped. They just have controllable versions of those two guys now. There would be no new 20 year legacy from this lineup because all Gene & Paul are interested in is living off the band's past. The makeup, the characters, the music... It all looks and sounds like it's 45 years ago. KISS isn't celebrating its past so much as leeching off it.

@@byronmacdowell3732 true, well said. I specifically mean the legacy of Tommy and Eric. Nearly twenty years with their own characters what could've been? I think they could have had two versions of KISS original line up with makeup for special occasions and have Eric and Bruce for new material.

In my opinion, I liked the documentary but it's not perfect. I love the never before seen footage from the 70s and 80s. I love the story telling and I love how they brought in Bob Ezrin and Eddie Kramer. BUT! I hate that they never talked about about Rock And Roll Over, Love Gun, and Alive 2. I hate how they blamed Vinnie and Eric's makeup as their downfall in popularity. It was people being burned out and I Was Made For Loving You that made them go out of popularity. I hate how they said the non-makeup albums were failures even though Animalize, Lick It Up, and Crazy Nights went Platinum while Asylum, HITS, and Revenge went Gold. They should have also talked about the deaths of Neal Bogart and Mark St. John. But all in all it was a cool documentary with some great footage and stories but some lies and messed up timeline bring it down for me. I give it 6/10.

@@anthonyx9481 Gene also does. When Eddie Trunk once asked why they have Tommy & Eric Singer in Ace & Peter's costumes and makeup instead of coming with new characters, he said, "We tried that with Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent. It didn't work." Also, according to Vinnie, the Egyptian character was PAUL's idea, and whoever they got to replace Ace was going to be that character. The real downfall of Kiss was going in a more pop-oriented direction with Dynasty and Unmasked, then trying to make a concept album with The Elder, leading fans to go "WTF is this?!". Creatures Of The Night is a great album, but a lot of fans had given up on them by then (as shown by the dismal ticket sales for the US tour), and it took years for it to go gold. Taking off the makeup in 1983 and rebranding themselves to fit in with the burgeoning hair metal scene revitalized them. They were all over MTV in the 80's, and their albums sold well.

WHAT I WROTE TO PAUL STANLEY: I can't believe you said that Ace and Peter didn't deserve the same amount of money that you and Gene got on the Psycho Circus and Fare Well tour! Yes! You guys have steered the ship after Peter and Ace left. But When they left, you weren't making no where near the amount of money or selling out stadiums like you were until they returned! You can't deny that! That was wrong! Especially after they proved to you guys that they could do a good job on the reunion tour! And did it your way! You were being greedy! Before they came back you couldn't sell out the Creatures tour or even the Revenge Tour! In fact! You had to cut those tours short! Peter and Ace saved your asses and brought back the interest in the band when you guys were floundering! DENY THAT! You and Gene continue to disappoint the Kiss fans by putting them down and not giving them the money that they deserve! And you wonder why they drink and took drugs! If I wasn't feeling any worth in the band and I'm working hard I might turn to drinking and drugs again as well! You can thank any success that you have today to Ace and Peter! Once the money talks, the BS walks. Remember the spectacle that Motley Crue did with signing a contract that they were “retiring” as a band? I heard they were cutting a new album and I saw the footage of Vince “Humpty Dumpty “ Neal touring and wheezing through a set list trying to get in shape for a Crue tour.

Gene and Paul totally owe their musical careers to three people: Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, and Vinnie Vincent that is the truth, since Gene and Paul continue making money and living from the performing skills and songwriting achievements of these three people. Just think, it wasn't unimaginable the Kiss career without Creatures, Lick it Up, and those 5 early albums and who made those records, Ace, Peter, and Vinnie Vincent.

I really thought it was a very great told story, there was stuff we knew, some bullcrap stuff. But my biggest problem is that Ace and Peter weren’t there. They say they didn’t want to, but I’m sure Gene and Paul wouldn’t let them. The biggest insult was they let the scabs interview but not the original members. I’m happy Peter didn’t let them use Beth because he wasn’t in it, but I think Ace and Peter should be in it. I give it about a 7 or 8 out of ten :)

Ever since the beginning of KISS they had to make the group look good regardless of how some members were not getting their way. Before the Internet, the only way to get information about them was through magazines but you would rarely hear about disagreement within the band it was made to look like all for one and one for all, otherwise the records wouldn't sell. It's only until now we are hearing what they are really like when it comes to the band and I still say they should have ended it back in 2001 when the tour was finished.

There are 'bootlegs' out there of the actual soundboard recordings of the KISS Alive 1 shows. They were briefly heard on a Kiss documentary in the late 90s. The mix was garbage and the songs severely garbled, yet an absolute live recording. There is NO doubt, KISS Alive 1 was completely re-engineered in the studio. Sean Delaney, Bill Aucoin and the original KISS road crew were criminally left out of the A and E special. As was the omission of 'Jesse Hilsen', Paul Stanley's psychiatrist, who became their manager from roughly '88 to '92. A weaselly dead-beat Dad, whom practiced Psychiatry for almost 20 years before Paul Stanley convinced Gene to make the douche-bag their manager. Hilsen absconded from KISS with almost $2 million dollars. Take note the A and E biography essentially left-off at the 'hazy' time some years before the EOTR tour. They largely omitted Psycho Circus, Sonic Boom and Monster. That says KISS decided to be 'done' with their 'original band enterprise philosophy' at that time. The EOTR tour is their retirement fund.

Thanks for the unfiltered rundown of the schlockumentary. An outside third-party would have been better at documenting their story. All four original members are the biggest losers this time around, since they still can't bury the hatchet. It was about egos and fleecing the sheep. It hasn't been KISS since: a) Side IV of Alive II b) Solo albums under the KISS banner (Ace should have left and it should have been repackaged as Frehley's Comet debut) c) That movie that was so great, voice actor Michael Bell dubbed Peter's voice d) Paul went to Studio 54...and the rest was infamy. The cracks were there from day one, but KISS was an unstoppable force in 1976-77.

Marc, They were NOT selling millions of records in the Eighties. KiSS owed millions to Polygram by 1988 as they had signed a multi-million deal in 1979 but apart from Dynasty, ALL the albums tanked. Mark Slaughter in a 2018 interview said that 'we had to declare bankruptcy'. Mark continued and said "we were surprised that KISS ( Paul and Gene) had to declare KiSS bankrupt as they owed Polygram milions.' KiSS also owed millions in tax as their creative accountant's from the 70's came up with bogus tax shelters. That's why they had the re-union in 1996. Gene and Paul needed the money. Paul claims Anamalize sold multi-platinum. However, in the earlier print interviews Paul Stanley said, 'we sold the same amount per album in the Eighties that we sold in the Seventies. NOTE - KiSS allegedly sold 1.5 million per album at their height i e. from 1976 - early 1978, when the real sales per album was closer too 800,000 per album, apart from Destroyer, KISS Alive II and Dynasty. In the Eighties bands were selling Diamond status which is 10 million ceritified albums sold in the US alone. Paul has previously mentioned Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses etc, as Diamond sellers.
