Adam, this is a very informative and well thought out video. I have to give you lots of credit for explaining everything so thoroughly and not sugar coating anything! Your apartment is clean and very neat, which is not typical of a young man like you. Your place is simple and not cluttered. I give you kudos for that too! I wish you lots of luck living in New York. You seem like a nice kid. I see you just moved from Texas. Born and raised NYer here who grew up in Lower Manhatttan. You have done great with your tiny space, but the biggest tip I can give to people like you is to learn the subway system and move to Queens. You can find affordable places a lot bigger than your place in other neighborhoods that are only a few stops away on the train. You can get from where I live in Astoria to the Upper East Side in 15 minutes flat. You mention something like this near the end of your video but really, unless you're a hardcore minimalist, nobody should be living in one of these micro apartments. You say it's now $2,600? The only people who would pay that for what you got are suckers who are afraid of crossing the bridge on the train. That being said, no doubt when your lease comes up you will be soaked for much more money so consider moving a little farther out. Oh, and it is definitely worth it to spend the seven to ten bucks a week to do your laundry at a local laundromat in stead of your dirty basement. Laundromats in NYC are usually vibrant, energetic businesses where you can get your business done efficiently. Good luck!
@samsadeniz2 жыл бұрын
Obviously he has wealthy parents.
@CyrusKA2 жыл бұрын
@@samsadeniz His parents likely have enough money to help but people with actual wealthy parents get them $4K/month one bedrooms downtown. Either way I don't care how much money your parents have, at some point you have to figure out how to live in NYC if you're going to live here.
@cathynewyork79182 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you about advising Adam to move to Queens. I live in Queens, in a much much larger place than this, in a rent-stabilized apartment for $1200 a month, elevator building, live-in super, laundry in the building, two large sunny windows with a view. Win win.
@cathynewyork79182 жыл бұрын
And a PS to my comment, I have three closets! Three closets for $1200 a month instead of his $1600 a month. Queens is the way to live well in New York City, and Manhattan is just a train ride away.
@kathrynarnold3132 жыл бұрын
I agree!! I lived in Sunnyside Queens from 2010-2014. I paid $1200 for a 2 bedroom apartment- no roommate. I loved it! I'm pretty sure he could have gotten at least a 1 bedroom in Queens for $1600. & YES to taking your laundry to the laundromat. It saved me so much time and they folded clothes far better than I could.

Great job of using mostly big furniture while keeping it uncluttered! It's similar to my 220 (185 main room/35 bathroom) square foot microflat in downtown L.A. Its saving grace has always been the 10 foot high ceiling. To save money on laundry and stay out of our shared laundry room, I bought a "portable" washer for $74.

As a native NYer, I forget how hard it is to make it in this city. Most people born here, have some kind of a support system, so we don't have to navigate as newcomers. I admire anyone who can make a home here.. You did a great job on you place, and you explained the crazy process of how to get an apartment in Manhattan. I'm terrified of NY rats, so I'd do my laundry someplace else. You're braver than me!

So right. And since the lease on the apartment transfers over to the "kids" still living in the place, some inherit that childhood home --at rent-controlled prices! Sad though that the city is becoming so unaffordable for others. Criminal really that a landlord can jack-up the rent by 1,000. a month!

I moved to Henderson in the fall of 2020 . I have a 3br 2 bath 2 car garage and in unit laundry its beautiful but I pay for it. It was $1900 when I moved here now 2338$ . There is a housing crisis from all the California transplants. But I am happy here and u can't put a price on happiness. I love how you have a table to eat at . I couldn't live without one . Your right about the plant and the flow . What also helped your space is the color palate and sticking to few colors . Even in the art and shower curtain. Like I said well done !!

If you don't want a Murphy Bed, because you want under the bed storage, then I would suggest an open shelving unit across the foot of the bed (wow....more storage) at a right angle to your desk. A floor to ceiling beaded curtain on the side of the bed would create separation, while not obscuring the daylight coming in through the 🪟 window, and alow you a peekaboo view through it while lying in bed. I would also add my passion, a storage bench window-seat with a potted 🌳 tree or palm in the corner. So many possibilities.

Living in a small space is such a challenge esp when you tend to hoard stuff, makes you often reflect on what you really need and what you don’t 😅

It's what works for you. I couldn't move to Manhattan because I couldn't stomach such a large amount of my net income going to rent. For a comparison, but not to brag, I'll mention my housing expenses in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Since my home is paid in full, I would estimate my "rent" for my 1,400 sq. ft. house at $400 a month. That covers the approximate property taxes plus a homeowners association fee. While there are other expenses in owning a house, it's still cheap for me. I'm not moving. Good video.

A fire escape is for fires, don't go out there without there being a fire, and really, it looks loud dirty uncomfortable and dangerous. And you got a good deal on the rent!
