My Tips On Character Design and My Process! ~speedpaint~

When I create my OC’s story I try to think about how I want the audience to feel about the story. Like how comedy’s are supposed to be funny and dramas are supposed to make you stressed... yeah and making villains or let’s say an internal struggle the main character to go through can help you decide where you want your characters to end up in the end of your story. Think about your characters at the start and then how you want them to turn. 😀 also If you want to make this into a comic or something it’s a good idea to read comics to see what you like about them to be inspired in order to help your story. That doesn’t mean copy the story but yeah🙂🙃

Thank you so much for this! I've seen another video on character design, but the body types and all the shapes were too exaggerated and classic cartoony to fit my artstyle. Also the part about colors really made me realize that I too often go for a palette of colors that are pretty much the same, no contrast. Again, thank you, this will definitly be useful. Iknow most of the time you need two colors for your Oc's to go of on but Iwould like to bring what you can do when yoj are focused on one color for your oc. One of my Oc's main color is teal and although i throw in some pink a time and again i wanted to focus on a way to make most ofbtheir clothes teal but not too much. I find that a good colors that can go with anything are black, white, and pink. Pink is a great color to use with teal for accessories and bracelets, boots, etc bjt you mostly use teal and pink together for a baby child like feeling, if you want your character to be cute gk ahead with pink bug i wanted my character to be someone who doesn't follow the rules. Black is a great way to show you're charcater is a rebel, If black is you're main collor you shoukd also mixit in with dark grays so that your chracter has some contrast. I noticed that black with my chracters teal adds a little bit of spice to their clothing. Black can be overpowering so keep that in mind when you use it. White is generally used to symbol a character is pure and all knowing, you can use this with other colors to also show that your chracter is enlighting and always has something wise to say.

I'm not sure if this will be any help, but what I've noticed a lot in characters is that they have two main themes; a character( or characters) that need a story or a character made for a story. So a tip I'd give is what role do they play in the world they're in? Are they a waitress waiting or their lover to step into their cafe or are they a busy business main trying to balance out work and play? Sometimes just mess around, do what you like but always step back and look at it from another perspective.

I made a story like yours when I was 12/13 too. Maybe a little different. I still don’t really know your story for your OCs. But mine were basically like Steven Universe. But different. The Gems were born like humans. Without a gem attached. The gem guardian guards an archive where gems are created. When a new Geotopian is born then a gem does too. Inside each gem is the Geotopian’s power and destiny. The Geotopian must wait till they are worthy of the gem. When the time has come the gem is inserted into their hand. If they become unworthy of their gem then the gem is taken away by the gem guardian.

I love your characters their so fun and interesting and personaly I belive when it comes to the appel of your character it depends on who its appeling to, your reason for making the the character or what genre their in. Who your appeling to refers to the general audience that you want to see your character. alot of cute, colorfull, and quirky designs usally appel towards kids since there easy to recognize and instally loveable.while more creepy designs appel to people who like creepier things.If you have a more creepy or eeire genre your character should refelt that, unless them being cute while the settings scary is a direct contrast in the story. it's the same thing for a funny or upbeat story, your character may have a cuter or more pleasing appel to match that genre, unless them being creepy while others are cute is intentional. For example BettleJuice, the storys more creepy and eeire and so the character design refects that. the same goes with the addams family. Now designs made to appel to kids such as my little ponys or littlest pet shop have characters that refelt their child appel. Imagine the pets in littelst pet shop being scary, you wouldn't want to watch it, but if the show was about a girl who uses her dumbwaiter to travel to the underworld were she watchs over the pets of demons or something and targeted to a slightly older audience you might not mind so much if they look a little creepy. I'm not saying that all characters have to be between cute and creepy but that they don't allways have to be cute in order to be appeling( just so you know I have nothing against your characters I love them and their inspiring i'm just saying in general)
