My Toddler Grunts Instead of Talking

My baby is 15 months old, he understands most of the instructions and commands, he repeats many words, but yet grunts or whines whenever he needs something. I was not bothered by it till now, but today someone said how your child is not talking much yet...and this made me really anxious and I came to youtube to find out the ways to help my child. I am surely going to try these tips and come back here to let u know how it worked in my case. Thank you so much.

My son is almost 3 , he says some words but grunts and points most of the time, I’ve been patient with him because it runs in my partner’s family that they are late talkers but I’m starting to think about speech therapy. I will try your tips 😊Thanks for this video ❤

My daughter grunts while watching a few videos online such as cloud babies or Ms Rachel or sparkabilities but has no words I was wondering what it was called AAC.. thank you for your help

Until what age is grunting normal as a form of communication?

Hi! Grunting and whining is replaced over time as gestures and new words are accumulated. I’d say by 2 years old when a child has at least 50 words that grunting will be less than half the time and by 3 a child typically has so many words that they wouldn’t need to grunt. Hope that helps!

My 4weeks premature 14 month old grunts a LOT, but with lots of pointing and gestures. He can say a few words, but generally just grunts & points. I’ll try these tips, but does prematurity play into it?

Yes, prematurity can play into it. Babies born before 37 weeks are at a higher risk for language delays; however, not all will have issues. at 14 months old, a few words along with grunting/pointing sounds on track :)

Thanks for sharing my son was a premie at 28 weeks. Now he still trying to talk he can say mama, Dada most of the times. His 2 yrs now he starts to grant and screams sometimes.

Yes! Does he only grunt or in combination with some words? At 18 months toddlers typically use 10-50 words so if the child is meeting that milestone and also grunting then I wouldn’t think they need speech therapy. If they aren’t using any words and only grunting then it would be a good idea to have an evaluation and see why/how to help. It’s free if you’re in the US. You can google “early intervention” and the name of your state and the list will show up in the results. I also have a free class for parents where I share some strategies you can start using at home (link in description). I also talk about my course in there if that’s something that interests you, but even if not, the free class is high value by itself!

My daughter doesn't speak any words so I have inquired about a speech therapist! she went to TN early intervention and passed with everything except speech she did get qualified for speech therapy through the state, so I want to pay out of pocket, just want to make sure I'm not being impatient with my child considering all children are different but my spirit says seek help
