Arya Stark at the top for me. Just something about her, from the start of the series being a but still having razor sharp instincts, to the ice cold killer she becomes. The end season of GoT had a lot of problems, but at least with Arya they didn't create any major screw-ups. Anyways, for those who have not read the books, the Arya story is even more harrowing there (imagine The Killing Fields in a fictional fantasy setting), and the character scarier, because of all the implications of what she is, why she is unnaturally good at killing. I have to also give recognition on this list to Atia of the Julii from Rome, and both Dr. Melfi and Meadow Soprano from The Sopranos. Atia is what you would expect from a conniving woman of power in Rome, mother of a future emperor (who will rewrite history to make his mom seem a very moral person). On the Sopranos, there were lots of good female characters, and they often showed their moral struggles. Livia and Janice were clearly on the dark side, one cruel the other conniving. Carmela was always in that struggle between being a typical wife with needs and a mob wife with wants. However, Dr. Melfi was the one with a more interesting sort of moral struggle, in that she was a normal person, outside :the life" and afforded a glimpse into it; she was professional and ethical, but in the end revealed as perhaps naive. She also had that great moral struggle when she could have easily used Tony to get revenge for a personal tragedy, was tempted by the power but stepped away from it. And Meadow's journey is interesting as she goes from a typical teen and probably the one Soprano with a chance to walk away from the family legacy, but you see it chipping away at her resolve until at the end she is basically embracing "the life", without admitting that she has.

I also enjoyed watching all of those Sopranos females you mention (they were all candidates for the list, too, but I wanted to include a more wide selection of shows) but really a whole top 10 list could be made with just Sopranos females and it would be an excellent one, as you allude to in your comment. 💯

Oddly enough, they misused that character the least. I can think of many worse examples, virtually any of them. Don't even mention anything to do with Dorne, yikes.

Not HBO but "Person of Interest" had the best bunch of women I've seen in awhile, maybe ever. It's great in other ways too, literally getting better each season and ending better than any show I've seen, except maybe "The Shield".
