This was so helpful! I bought one of the in the beginning of the summer as a house plant and the leaves kept browning. I keep for months sending pictures back to the plant house I got it from and followed all their directions for care. I initially was watering it once a week, then they told me to water it every 2-3 days until I see water come out the pan on the bottom. Now it only has 3 healthy leaves left. Clearly they were giving me back instructions. Thank you for posting this is as now I know I was severely over watering it.

@Megan Elizabeth Rozak, Thank you so much for your feedback and glad to be able to help...for any indoor plant, through water once in 2-3 days is too much..Even in Summer, I take a gap of many days before watering some of my other sensitive indoor plants like ZZ, Aglaonema etc..Areca Palm is bit hardy comparing to many other plants and can go many days without water. Sometimes I even forget to water it and water only when I see leaves are looking droopy! Not a good habit, I know :-) Good luck with your plant and Happy Gardening :-)

@Lucinda Randolph, Thank you very much for your words and once in 3-4 days is definitely way too much!!! Here it's not too cold in Winter but if I remember exactly, I watered my plant only twice in January and I am keeping my plant indoor. Over watering definitely harms Areca Palm than under watering. Anyway, please don't worry! At this time most of the indoor plants don't look that happy. But, they are going to look better very soon. They are also going to produce new pups as it's almost Spring :-) Good luck with your plants!

@@GardeningUpbeat ThanQ for your reply. And yes, I agree! What are the fertilising drops you use please? I may try them. Your Areca is the nicest I've seen. The temperature must help. And you give it such great TLC. Love the kiddy shouting "subscribe." Have a great year. Namaste. x
@GardeningUpbeat3 жыл бұрын
@Lucinda Randolph, The Crystals are DAP (Diammonium phosphate). It's a chemical fertilizer works well. In case you don't want to use Chemical, any organic fertilizer would work. Glad you liked my plant and definitely you are right, temp helps a lot. My place is quite hot and humid and can grow all palms very easily. At the same time, we get lots of issue while growing Calatheas, mainly because of extreme hot! Glad you loved the shouting and thank you once again, Namaste!!! TC :-)

Thank you very much :-) Yeah..leaves turn yellow under direct sunlight..But if the plant is quite big and growing in ground specially, 2-3 hours of direct sunlight doesn't harm that much. I bought an Areca palm last July , after 1 month it started drying out branch after branch . After 2 months I relocated my home. I noticed that the Areca tree needs time to adjust when you relocate it . Now it is growing new branches and I am very happy. I water it once a week and I always test the soil before watering. The problem I have now is that I have dry old twigs in the pot and I don’t know how to get rid of them. I tried pulling them out some came out but others are firmly planted. Should I pull them out or cut them ? Please advise
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@mirna hamade, I am extremely sorry for the late reply...normally, I try my best to reply every queries within 24 hours or at least 48 hours. Somehow, I missed your question and so sorry about that. Glad to know your plant is doing well and you are right, Areca Palm needs time to adjust (it's almost same for almost all the plants). If you can, simply pull them out or cut them (you might have to dig up the soil a bit and no worry if you do, mother plants are not going to mind it). Or else, simply keep it as it is, but it would be better to pull them out and this way, your plant would be free from fungus free. Hope, you would find the reply helpful and let me know if you have any questions, thank you again :-)

@Rebel Fleur, Most welcome and thank you so much for your words, appreciate it :-) Black spots going all up the stems and onto the leaves a little bit - Sorry to say, not a good sign but no need to worry too much. Please cut back on watering and provide as much air flow to the plant as possible and also very bright light. Happens when we move a plant from bright place to darker space and water more. If possible, plz try to provide the plant same environment (mainly light) like it was getting in Garden center. Your plant is going to take some days to adjust in new environment but eventually it would. Till, then only proper watering and light is needed. Hope that helps, thank you :-)

@SingingCrowie, You are most welcome and thank you so much for watching :-) Well, you really don't have to worry too much...as Palms always take time to grow :-) In wild, they grow really very fast, but NOT in containers and in indoor. My plant was 1.5 years old..and believe me, even after 2.5 years (considering current time), there is not a great change in terms of growing comparing to plants that are grown outdoor. But still, they are one of the best indoor plants to grow that don't need too much care like Calatheas. Happy Gardening :-)

Our Majesty palm was growing nicely for about a year, about 2 months ago we saw a new spear was coming up and it was growing as normal, then it just stopped growing and the edges of the leafs are turning yellow and brown. We transplanted it in to a new and bigger pot and gave it fresh soil with fertilizer, but nothing has changed ...we water it every week and we mist the leaves weekly as well..nothing is working, i dont know if its dead or not?
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@Google Reviewer, All palms usually take time to grow well, specially whenever we keep them indoor in pots. In wild, they grow quite fast. 2 months is bit early to see rapid growth and since you have provided it fresh soil, it would be doing well in coming days. No worry, it's definitely not dead. The lack of bright light could be the cause of the edges of the leafs are turning yellow and brown. Also, since you have provided it a bigger pot, please check whether it needs water once a week or not. Please let the top soil dry out completely before watering.... Anyway, to my knowledge, Majesty palm doesn't do that great whenever we grow them indoor. Instead of this, you can consider Areca palm (Also known as the bamboo palm), Rhapis palm, Parlor palm etc. Good luck :-)

Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of too little watering or too much watering do a a soil test make sure the soil is not overly retaining water because this can lead to root rot only wet when the soil is dry in addition they dint like too much sunlight so if they are outdoors that could be a cause of yellowish brownish leaves

@Yana Tyagi, Oh, sorry to know that but don't worry, Areca palm is hardy and it won't die. Just avoid watering before you see that top soil is drying. It would let you know when it needs water simply drooping it's leaves. In the meantime, you can keep the plant where there is a good airflow. This would help in drying out the soil faster. Good Luck :-)

@GardeningUpbeat5 жыл бұрын
@Manisha Patel, sorry to say not getting the exact question :-( I mean, you want to know where to cut or how to? Anyway, brown leaves are not going to help the plant in anyway. So, you can remove the complete brown leaves. A pic would be helpful in providing the exact solution and if you like you can send me an email at gardeningupbeat[at]gmail.com. Thanks :-)

@Manisha Patel, You are welcome. Myself Chandan Dutta and I would appreciate if you don't call me Sir :-) Can you send me few pics (covering the brown leaves) to my email id? Definitely, I would be able to point out exactly where to cut..Anyway, you still can remove the complete brown portion including the leaf sheath.

Hii.. I had rescued an Areca from the outdoor environment that was going brown from its tips. Since it was huge in size and deep in the rooting system. I had cut the stem from the bottom of the mother plant. Now the problem is: browning is increasing. I have repotted it with a pebble base followed by an inch of sand and mix of soil (dry + moist)... The previous pot in which I kept the plant for a week was holding up water and making a clayey deposit of soil. THESE ARECAS DO NOT HAVE ROOTS. I could not reach it while cutting. I really want to save them. Please help. As everything is closed right now...I am unable to get cow dung compost. P.S. It is a 80cm tall areca in 17cm pot A quick reply can help me save a lot! Thanks!!

@Tazyeen Alam, At the time of dividing from the mother plant, we should take out it with few roots at least and that way, they can regrow quite fast. I can understand, you couldn't reach there. Since you have already repotted the plant, there is nothing much you can do actually. We would need to wait for some days and hope it starts growing. Till then, please don't keep it under direct sun and water very very carefully. Water requirements would be very low as it doesn't have roots. Please also make sure that, new pot has at least one drainage hole so that water can drain well. Anyway, no worry and hopefully the plant starts to grow. Size of the new pot is fine, good luck :-)

@@GardeningUpbeat Thanks a lot for replying... The leaves have started turning brown... The soil is somewhat dry. But i will not give it water as I think it doesn't need much. Even when I do, I will just sprinkle some.. Such that it reaches the base of the plant (not the pot). If you think of anything else. Do let me know. 😊

@Tazyeen Alam, Most welcome and that's perfect! You can keep doing that and once you see some movement, you can increase watering level and move your plant to a more bright area or provide it 1-2 hours of direct morning sunlight. It would grow fast, thank you 😊😊😊😊

Hi, I have my Areca palm and the leaves are yellowing and I had it in a good place where she don’t receive the direct sun and I tried to put water when the dirt is dry but I don’t know why is yellowing! Please help me!
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@Gladis Quintanilla, If few leaves are turning yellow, it's okay and no need to worry. It's the growing time and if your plant is not growing and most of the leaves are turning yellow, then there is a problem. Please make sure the pot has a drainage hole and water should drain out well after watering. Whenever you water, water thoroughly so that soil gets a good soaking. Either you are watering too frequently and not watering enough. You can simply dig the soil (4-6 inch deep) and see which one is going wrong. So, next time whenever you water your plant, wait for 4-5 days after watering and then check the soil. If it's wet, means you are watering too frequently. If it's dry, you are not providing your plant enough water. Hope that helps, thank you :-)

Please suggest the control of mealy bugs in areca palm
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@shivangi agarwal, Very solution no 1 - take 1 teaspoon detergent in 1 liter water and spray the plant. 2 - You can use Neem oil - Dose - 5-6 ml neem oil + 4 ml light hand wash (like savlon) and mix them in 1 liter water. Spray the plant once or twice and all mealybugs would be gone under 48 hours. Thank you :-)

i have a problem with my arica....there are some brown and white spot on the plant....i have used hydrogen peroxide today....is it work?
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@Priyanka rocks, Brown spot is the common sign of Overwatering..anyway, if you are able to spot only few and overall plant looks healthy, you don't have to worry too much :-) White spot - look like your plant is under pest attack like either Scale or Mealybugs. Please look closely and see if you can spot them. IF yes, plz use pesticide. Hydrogen peroxide is used totally for other purpose - it provides more oxygen to the roots in the soil. Though many claim, it can be use as pesticide but I prefer to use Pesticide for any pest related issue. Thank you :-)

My arica palm is drying even after applying vermicompost, dap and biofertiliser too. I am very disappointed on seeing this. I am not giving it too much water only when the soil dried. Not keep it in the sun but in the room earlier. Now in winter I kept on roof. Please help me.
@GardeningUpbeat5 жыл бұрын
@pragya upadhyay, sorry to know about it but don't worry, your plant would do well. Since it was inside before, plz don't keep it directly on terrace. This way, plant would get difficult to adjust in it's new environment and leaves might get burned even if it's winter. If possible, plz provide morning sunlight initially and then you can gradually increase the sunlight exposure. Can you plz let me know the size of the pot you are using and how much water you are providing? Since it's drying, I believe you are providing it LITTLE water. Whenever you water, plz water heavily so that all soil gets wet nicely. Then wait and water only when top soil dries out. You can also turn the soil a bit so that roots get the oxygen. Hope that helps..if not, plz let me know few more details so that I can provide you exact solutions. Thank you very much for watching the video n no worry, your plant would do better in coming days :-)

Can we grow areca palm in self watering pots?
@GardeningUpbeat4 жыл бұрын
@Jyothirmayi Vishwaroju, I haven't tried yet but I don't think there would be any issue at all :-) Honestly saying, self watering pot is more of a new marketing product and I feel it's safer not to use them :-)
