Can't beat the Golden Age of RPGs. It's like games companies have forgotten how to make a 'proper' JRPG. It's actually rare these days to see towns full of NPCs and almost unheard of to see a world map any more.

The entirety of the Mario & Luigi RPG series holds a very special place in my heart. They may not be groundbreaking like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, nor are they my personal favorite JRPGs (that honor belongs to both Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles), but they're fun enough in both their story and gameplay that I really recommend them to anyone who's just looking for a great time.

I was suffering through SMT DDS1 and had to put it down. It drops all the elements I love from the Persona series and other SMT games. I like monster collecting, choice trees and sim elements. Demon fusion is hours of fun. All missing in DDS. and the bland colour pallet on top. Persona 3 was such a gorgeous game comparedly and so fun to play. I'm sure I'll get through it amd like it eventually.

There is no real need to make the game available by other means, Lost Odyssey was the best selling JRPG on Xbox 360 it sold almost like a million copies which was incredible sales numbers for a JRPG on that system and so the game is still plentiful available and cheap to get it is like 10 to 20 bucks on Amazon and ebay and all current Xbox systems are backwards compatible so it is no problem to find a way to play it also the game probably even is on game pass

This must have been hard to formulate. Some are easy picks but I wonder how difficult it was to dis-include some of them. Soul Blazer and Persona 4 would have made it into my top 30 overall, but since I haven't done such a list I'm not sure how I'd flesh this process out. Good on you for being able to finalize a list like this. There are SO MANY amazing JRPG experiences out there that you could have made a list of 100 and I'd bet you'd still be wishing to include others. I have to admit, out of every game you mentioned in here, many I have played and enjoyed, but of the ones I haven't, you know which one of the ones I haven't that I want to play the most? Popolocrois. For years now I have seen bits of that game and I absolutely love how it looks and its presentation amongst other things. A very satisfying game to just look at and I'm sure to play and it somehow looks to me like no other JRPG. Thanks David, this is a stellar list!

Completely agree with your sentiment about Final Fantasy Tactics and thought the same when I first played this game growing up. However, I just had a chance to play the original Tactics Ogre (Super Famicom version) and it was absolutely incredible-- especially the OST, pixel art, and the story. I really liked that the plot was a bit darker and had more gravity than FFT, and you'll take truly unique paths based on your choices. Highly recommended, even for those not necessarily fans of strategy RPGs.

I've played the. Hack series. It's not a cake walk and the hack skill in the game has a limit to how many times it can be used in one of the games in the series. Big fan of the anime that started the series as well as the anime given with the first set of the series.

Curious as well if you've played it. The gameplay can be hit or miss for some, but the story is best-in-class and I've still yet to find anything that quite hits that mark as far as what it tries to accomplish. It has a high emphasis on mystery, and character development. I've learned more about myself playing .hack than I have nearly any game. It's a very cerebral and psychological story. Especially the second set of games, the G.U. games. The focus is so much on the characters that you often forget that there's a larger threat or villain. The "save the world" storyline exists to compliment the interactions of the characters. Very clear that the intent of .hack was to more explore people than beat some evil god.

@@dididothat4495 haven't played G. U. Just the first 4 games of dot hack series. I'm a anime fan and I saw the first series of dot hack sign in college. I know people like the 2nd part, but boy do i love the original "Grandia". I think it's the game that got me into rpgs and later made me a Final Fantasy fan. Maybe it's nostalgia but every time i start "Grandia" again, tears come to my eyes.

16. Final Fantasy Tactics - PS1 - Surrender or die in obscurity! Memorable lines. A host of brothers to compare myself and my brothers to, a limitless job system, chocobos for battle, and filthy villains that I want to kill! Strategic, amazing, lovely! 17. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber - N64 - A strategy RPG epic. It's easy to put away hour after hour with this game, and it's bloody difficult without the item duplication glitch. My first playthrough saw me with a Chaos Frame of 40/100. :( But man, this game was involved with some very serious war stories with a good supernatural twist. The battle system may be too awkward for a lot of people, but I enjoy it. 18. Grandia II - Dreamcast - Character cast is amazing. R.I.P. Mareg my favey. I, as the kids these days say, ship Roan and Tio, when Roan grows into the king he's meant to be. Perhaps this game started my infatuation with girl androids? We might also thank Android 18 from DBZ though I guess. Also I'd like to be stepped on my Millenia, but maybe I should talk more about the games in these descriptions than my *ahem* fantasies. 19. Suikoden II - Gripping narrative. Gripping characters. I never did manage to get all 108 Stars as a kid. Heck, I missed my chance o get +16 weapons cause I didn't let the Destiny Star Blacksmith work on the holy sword that Victor gets. Really quite fond of this game, and to me it's the best Suikoden. 20. Wild Arms III - PS2 - Strange but cool that everyone uses ARMS now. Intro amazing. References to first game. Liked it quite a bit more than 2. 21. Knights of the Old Republic - Xbox - Bioware really pulled off a great Star Wars RPG. I didn't think a modern RPG could get better than this. Fully voice acted. Amazing characters with real depth. Character interaction in the field! Comedy, drama, romance. The Force! Lightsabers, yeehaw! 22. Knights of the Old Republic 2 - Xbox - Obsidian too everything I loved about the first game and improved it. The character Kreia in this game is one of gaming's best written characters of all time, even if I can't get over my adolescent annoyance and misunderstanding of her, completely. I don't think you're supposed to, though. 23. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance - Gamecube - Another strategy RPG. I know some folks like to separate strat RPGs from "normal" RPGs, but I think that does strat RPGs a disservice. It's Intelligent Systems first 3-D Fire Emblem and it shows, but the game makes up for that with narrative and art. 24. Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn - Wii - A direct sequel, something rare for Fire Emblem. Improves upon everything, but critics shitcanned it for its difficulty. Silly game journos. Only bad thing about it is the support system has no depth, unlike every other Fire Emblem. A gem that deserved better sales, replay value for hidden ending upon Clear Game data replay! Also transfer bonuse from its predecessor, similar to Suikoden! 25. Tales of Symphonia - Gamecube - Quite long in my opinion. It's the only Tales game I've finished, due to my Xbox 360 dying on me towards the end of Tales of Vesperia. This is where my love for Tales games really started, even though I'd seen and experienced Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny on earlier consoles. 26. Pokemon: Soulsilver - Nintendo DS - RPGs are really starting to be hard to find, and this might make you wonder why I didn't list pokemon games earlier... well, I hadn't considered them to be RPGs even though they were until the absolute desert of RPGs started to form. This was a 100% faithful remake, literally Pokemon Silver with updated systems and graphics and pokedex. It is still my favorite pokemon game, and nothing feels quite as epic in pokemon as battling Red on top of Mt. Silver at game's end. 27. Final Fantasy XI - PS2 - Yes, an MMORPG makes this list. Yes, I know they are skinner boxes and what not. I don't care. FFXI had amazing storylines and graphics. I played this game for 10 years, and felt it absolutely shat upon modern Final Fantasies in terms of stories being told. The social experience was also quite exhilarating for a shut in like me. 28. Final Fantasy V - SNES - What's this classic doing all the way down here? Well, I didn't get to really emulate it till this point. This is a list going off of memory and my memory is spotty. Basically I was around my late teens, and my PS2 got taken away due to poor school performance ( I made a C, oh noes!). So I played this instead of FFXI while waiting for my sentence to be up. It taught me to use buffs, as I accidentally entered the Void early and didn't have good jobs leveled or anything. Infinite replay ability. A solid game that was there for me when my choice games couldn't be. 29. Mass Effect - Xbox 360 - I actually didn't get to play it for myself in my own way until years later after joined the Navy. I actually played the PS3 port as well, bought from the digital store. Basically it's KOTOR but with discount Force powers redubbed as, "Biotics." I found that system kinda janky, so I stuck to Soldier. THe journal entries and weapon customization and the squad commands are all magnificent though. Once Liara obtains Singularity, combat difficulty is essentially over. 30. Final Fantasy XIV - PS3/PS4 - Yes, both FF MMORPGs are in my favorites. I will not tell a lie. At first, I couldn't get over how poor the story and characters were, compared to FFXI. I had the classic FFXI veteran disdain for XIV. THe more I played though, the better it got. I basically let my friendships carry it for me until it got good, and now it's got story material that rivals any standard RPG. It is starting to go stale, but well, it is a vertical progression MMO, whereas XI was horizontal(or used to be).

Lost Odyssey may be in my personal top 3 favorite video games of all time. FF6 and Chrono Trigger will still be in a perpetual battle for 1st place but Lost Odyssey man... so many tears shed during that masterpiece of a video game that made owning an Xbox 360 worthwhile.

As a diehard Chrono Trigger fan, I loved your comment about Chrono Cross, I think it’s tied with Final Fantasy 8 for ‘Most loved or hated game’ lol. I thought it was a mess, too many characters, story was just too scrambled, Schala had blonde hair…BLONDE HAIR! A travesty, the only thing that saved it from being the worst game was it’s surprisingly terrific OST. You have prob heard of Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes eh? There’s a play through of it and it’s an awesome game, especially for fam made. That’s the true sequel we deserved.

Let's see... I can't go for the release date thing, so I'll go with my earliest memories to my current. I am also not going to limit series by shining examples. No holds barred, favorites RPG list, go! 1. Final Fantasy - NES - So begins my love of escapism, as my brothers and I take turns, name ourselves heroes, and always include a female named WHM so that it's not a sausage fest... even though all of the promoted classes look like guys. 2. Dragon Warrior 3 - NES - Like FF1 but more difficult. Yeehaw 3. Final Fantasy IV - SNES - Simple, fun, colorful. Includes some of my first video game crushes in the forms of Rydia and Rosa. I always used to name them after girls I was crushing on in school at the Namingway. 4. Final Fantasy VI - SNES - My favorite Final Fantasy of all time. THe characters, the graphics, the music, the world split, the floating continent, magitek, espers, and the special skills. I love everything about this game. I consider it the Final Fantasy Magnum Opus. 5. Chrono Trigger - SNES - Intimate party combos. Secret unlockable villain. DBZ character artist. Memorable story. Sidequests that feel important. This game had it all! 6. Super Mario RPG - SNES - An oddity. As a kid, I thought the box said, "Super Mario ROC." And I was drawn to it by the visuals on the box. It was my 7th birthday gift, and my older brother wanted me to get some co-op shooter as my birthday gift choice instead. I did, at first, but decided I didn't like it, so we returned it and I got Super Mario RPG! Quite literally my favorite Mario game too. Square really did a bang up job. 7. Lufia II - SNES - Probably the best RPG battle system out of the SNES era with the IP attacks. It's both complex for minmaxing and simple for easy accessibility. The puzzles are real brain teasers, even to this day. The story is great, even if you know the main events and ending preemptively. 8. Wild Arms - PS1 - One of the best RPGs and RPG stories of all time. Admittedly the battle graphics are slightly weak as far as character design goes, but the bosses look good for the time, and the battle mechanics are FUN! The Tools system makes for interesting dungeons with slightly easier puzzles than Lufia 2. 9. Phantasy Star IV - Sega Genesis - It's around this point in my life that my brother introduces me to emulation. This was the first Phantasy Star I played, and it's the best overall in the original series. It will always have a special place in my heart. 10. The 7th Saga - SNES - This game was brutal. I remember watching my brother play, and he had Kamil and Esuna. He hadn't done a lot of level grinding, and did not know about the point of no return before the time travel. As such, he went into the past with exceedingly low levels, and he was so weak that he couldn't efficiently grind and he gave up on beating the game. I didn't beat it my first go around, but I came back to it with an official copy on my SNES, and beat it with Wilme and Lux (NO LUX GLITCH). It was fun getting revenge for my brother, if nothing else. 11. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete - PS1 - My name is Alex, and the main protag is named Alex. Time for an EGO TRIP! This game was the game that taught me about MP efficiency. As a kid I loved to waste all of Alex's MP spamming Red Dragon Anger. Silly me. 12. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue - PS1 - Never get between a man and his cheesecake! 13. Skies of Arcadia - Dreamcast - A fun game with a lot of heart. This is the game where I started to enter puberty, as such I had huge crushes on Fina, Aika, and Belleza. I love the cast. I love the ship battles. I love the Discoveries system. THe crew system. THe voiced battle lines. This game really blew it out of the water for me. 14. Final Fantasy IX - PS1 - Even though I have always hated Zidane, I love the rest of the cast and this game. It's very memorable, charming, and the gear/skills system rocks. Only thing bad about it is the ATB is abysmally slow. 15. Chrono Cross - PS1 - Sorry David, but your opinion on this game is poor! ;) Though I will admit that its weakness is that there are too many party members, so it's the first game where who you use it's merely flavor choices for the most part. Its story is a wild ride, if somewhat infuriating (Chrono and co. died to invaders and DALTON? Seriously? BS!). Karsh is my favorite character. I have a rather big weakness for any guys that get themselves into unrequited love situations.

In regards to The 7th Saga, I can't remember which characters were which. Is Kamil the human with the sword? And is Lux the robot? If Lux is the robot, I beat the game with him and Esuna. But what's the Lux glitch? I don't recall anything glitchy happening when I played with him?
@SirVyre
@SirVyre 3 жыл бұрын
@@ourdivinemouseoverlord3308 Towards the end of the game, in the Tetujin city of the past, there's a dude that upgrade Lux if he's the lead party member. This gives Lux +20 to all stats, and if you make use of the glitch, you can walk away as the upgrade occurs and loop back upstairs, and keep looping the upgrade until his stats reach maximum allowable value, allowing Lux to One or two shot all remaining bosses in the game become essentially invincible to random encounters.
