Yes, for me pg7 has zero place as a stand alone pigment in a painting but is the best mixer and shifter of other colors. I have a hard time trying to figure out what other color has those characteristics so defined as pg7(great mixer and almost unusable pure) . Maybe magenta 122?

Nice video. Qor Dioxazine Violet has become my "go to" color for shadows, especially when I am painting portraits of African American models with darker skin tones. I enjoy that a couple of my models really love the fact that I use so much purple and dark blue when I am painting them.

Thank you for the great video! I was waiting specifically for this because I'm a fan of using purple/magentas in my work. I don't like the idea of using up my primaries mixing it all the time so I was trying to find recommendations. It seems like such an underappreciated colour!

I LOVE quin. violet. Another color i use a lot as a purple (though it appears very black/gray) is M Graham's neutral tint, i tend to use very desaturated colors in my work and so when i mix neutral tint wit maybe a bit of diox. violet it acts really well as a desaturated purple

I love that Qor is your favorite Dioxazine Purple. It's mine too. Some of it is just the way Qor paints flow, but it also is just this amazing color that's dark, but I don't need to overwhelmingly add the other color if I mix it, unlike the other Dioxazine Purple I used in the past.

Im loving this series, it's so interesting to see what other artists paint with. I dislike PV19 i never know if im getting a purple or pink. I also like PV23 but worry about it's lightfastness, I quite like a manganese violet mix, sennelier does a great one it's labelled cobalt violet hue.

I'm not sure if you've seen my Color Spotlight on PV23, but I talked a lot about lightfastness there. My current fav pick is QoRs. PV19 is definitely tricky, but I'm tentatively looking into starting a blog/resource on my website with swatches. I think I have tried at least a dozen PV19 and they're beautiful, you just have to know which ones to go for :)

I agree about Rose of Ultramarine. I don't use it often, but I love that color so much. I bought it to make a painting for my nieces (they were wearing dresses that color in the painting) and I've been in love ever since. My favorite use of it is to charge Cerulean Blue in skies. I keep meaning to play with using Quin Rose and Ultramarine with it just to see how easily it can be adjusted red to blue. Along with Rose of Ultramarine, I use Daniel Smith's PV23 Carbazole Violet, Daniel Smith's 3 pigment mix of Moonglow, and Daniel Smith's Amethyst Genuine, which is probably one of the most beautiful colors in their line ... wonderful for night skies and such. Thanks to your video, I want to try a Napthamide Maroon. I loved those darks you got!

I don't know how it happened but purples have become a staple on my palette and really essential for mixing the colors I want. PV29 from Mission Gold is my personal can't-live-without pigment (I've noticed it reads slightly cooler and less red than other brands I've tried, more "purple" straight out of the tube). Right now I'm experimenting with dioxazine purple for the first time after receiving the QoR high chroma set for Christmas and loving it. 💖 I hope you had a wonderful holiday, thanks always for all the time and effort you put into these videos for us!

I dont really have a favorite purple - but I do like the ones that falls to the cooler bluer side like Dioxazine. I dont particularly gravitate to this color. I do love using them for shadows when doing portraits - glacing it over the skintone, or using it to tone down my base skin tone mixture.

Nice choices! I'd been waiting for diox haha. My favourites have to be diox and Schmincke's Manganese Purple - I know you don't generally like granulation. But I love it. And the Manganese Violet creates beautiful separation, makes beautiful browns and is also stunning in skies

Yes, after submitting my comment I was thinking about it again and realized that things might be changing. Haha. When I got my first artist quality watercolour (Cobalt Blue Dark by Schmincke - the 15 ml tubes were on clearance. €5 instead of €15) I was shocked about the granulation - thought I made a mistake. But then I mixed it with an orange to create a grey for a misty sky and the separation... Beautiful. I got these more orange and more blue parts with the grey in the background. So moody!

What I love about quinacridone purple is, it's just as close as a pigment could get to the visual complementary of green. It would really be cool if a convenience green happened to be a good mixing complementary, but I quess it's going to be something towards yellow - an imperfection that all the magentas and purples seem to share.

Yaay my favorite shades of color! I got a small tube of moonglow, wondering why a lot of people are raving about it. Still not sure how exactly I feel about it, but I've used it a lot as a sort of muted purple for black prince succulents and for shadows. Hope I run out soon so I have a legitimate reason to finally buy carbazole violet hahaha

Moonglow is especially gorgeous on its own. Try adding a lot of water to it and you'll see the seperation and effects it has. It has the widest range of shades within one color (although it is a mix of pb29, pr177, pg18.) Its phenomenal. I just bought a tube of green apatite gen. That color is very versatile.

My favorite purples are Quin Purple Blue from Van Gogh (PV55) and Ultramarine Violet from Mission Gold (PV14) which granulates. I enjoy my Daniel Smith Colors of Inspiration 6-pan set, five of which are purple convenience mixes, but if I were to spend that money again, I'd just get a tube of my two or three favorite purple mixes and pass on the rest of the set. The Lilac & Wisteria are pastels with white added and I could do without them. (Also Serpentine does makes an interesting sap green with scarlet precipitates, so it's not a bad set. ) Currently saving up to try a Cobalt Violet and Perylene Violet.

I vary a lot - Manganese Phosphate purples (from W&N Perm Mauve PV16 Manganese Ammonium Phosphate to DS Purpurite N/A Natural Manganese Phosphate) I love for more abstract and highly textured work especially paired with Genuine Naples Yellow (Wallace Seymour Vintage and Ancient lines PY41 Lead Antimonate Yellow Pyrochlore) - they look great together. I love PV55 Quin Violet a lot both as Schmincke’s Quin Purple and W&N’s earlier Quin Purple that was in their Twilight Collection, now discontinued. I love PV23 Dioxazine Violet in acrylic but tbh I don’t use it often in Watercolour - I find it too much. I adore PV15 Ultramarine Violet esp. the W&N version - I find the QoR one a bit chalky - and the Wallace-Seymour Artists’s line one. PR259 Ultramarine Pink would probably qualify as a purple too and I use that from W-S Artist line too. The OLD Schmincke 3 Brilliants - Brilliant Violet etc were amazing but the 2017 reformulations are too muted (albeit more lightfast). White Nights Rose-Violet and Violet use the same pigments as the old Schmincke colours namely PV1 Rhodamine Violet, PV3 M Methyl Violet etc etc and they are a pleasure to use particularly in mad abstracts and gentle botanicals alike. Even with their lightfastness, they will last 15-50 years if displayed correctly.

I use purples a lot. Two you did not mention are from Daniel Smith and are favorites: Shadow Violet and Sugilite. Shadow is perfect for shadows as the name suggests. Sugilite from the Prima Tek series is a light purple with a touch of sparkles in it. I have used Daniel Smith’s Carbazole Violet and decided I didn’t like that one because mixed with yellow or golds to neutralize it inevitably turned brown & switched to Winsor & Newton Windsor Violet. Very similar color but does not turn brown.
@InLiquidColor

Hmm that's a bit confusing as PV23 and yellows are compliments so any of them - that I've used at least - turn brown, which is actually what I want from those combos. I'll have to check out the DS specifically as I usually use QoR or WN.

Another good video, Denise. :) I only have one purple on my palette and to tell you the truth, I do not use it frequently either. I have two tubes of it actually: Ultramarine Violet from Winsor & Newton and Ultramarine Violet Deep from M. Graham. The Quinacridone Purple from Schmincke looks nice, however, and I have always wondered whether Cobalt Violet was worth buying. Mostly I just mix purple using Permanent Rose and Ultramarine Blue or Prussian Blue, depending upon whether I need granulation or not. I paint mostly landscapes and find myself mixing more muted purples for shadows or shade in a landscape by adding Burnt Sienna or Red Iron Oxide to the above mixtures. Wishing you and your family all the best for 2018.

I saw a paragraph about pr171 on a website www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterc.html#PR171 and think you might want to consider buy some tubes of pr171 as stock. ( NOTE. No manufacturers were registered under this pigment pr171 in The Colour Index (4th edition online), which suggests that stockpiles of the pigment may soon be depleted. Winsor & Newton used it in their discontinued color purple madder, listed under PR122.

When I very first started with watercolor, I was shocked that they had one-pigment purples. I literally was asking myself "Why!?". However, Dioxazine Violet immediately caught my attention. The thing is that it's a beautiful color, yet it feels a bit strange seeing it straight out of the tube and not mixed with something. I find all secondary colors that are a single pigment to appear a bit uncomfortably in the eye. Not that it doesn't make beautiful mixes, but it's only the fact that it's so gorgeous that it can even be used on its own, when I don't prefer that... Ughhh...

I find color mixing so amazing! I would expect my M. Graham Dioxazine Purple to be the same as my friend's Daniel Smith Carbazole Violet (though pigment colors can be totally different). What I didn't expect was M. Graham's Transparent Red Iron Oxide (PR101) to be identical to Daniel Smith's Burnt Sienna (PBr7). Do you address any other "colors from a parallel world" in your videos?

would be kinda late, lol but you can use either maroon or burnt sienna, maroon will turnout slightly darker; so you can add pyrol red, light red or a deep red, if that is to dark you can lighten it with pure yellow, if you want translucent don't use a cadmium cause they are more opaque. My favorite however is burnt sienna and basicly any red minus the cadmium, you can tone down using an opposite color and lighten it with pure yellow or quin gold. My top mix is still burnt sienna with deep red and a touch ouf quin gold. just grab a plate and test your mixes with amount of water, etc

I'm also a huge fan of Dioxazine Purple, the Sennelier especially. I also adore the DS Rose of Ultramarine, but I just love it rather than use it a lot. Odd.

I'm the same with the Rose of Ultra! I was so excited to buy a tube and thought about it for a long time... but then I was like, wait.... what do I use this for? Haha

It's so beautiful that merely having it is enough. I put it in my palettes because I want it there, even if I don't use it, which seems wrong. I need to think more about what I can do with it. It's a creative challenge.

Has anyone tried M. Graham's version of Diox Purple (PV23)? Would love to hear your opinion, if you have. Thank you.

Yep! It's lovely. Very close to QoRs. Not positive on light fastness though.

MG's has lightfastness rating of II (which is a 2 in their scaling). Many of MG's are one's. I see Qor's has ASTM Lightfastness: NA -- does that mean it has not been tested?

Mary Algar it means ASTM hasn't rated it but I've heard from many people that it's excellent. Im working on my own tests but it'll be a while of course!

The handprint page does not mention Quin purple PV55 or Perylene PV29. Newer pigments, perhaps?

Stephen Turner It was not used in paint before about 2005 - W&N introduced it in their Twilight Collection as Quin Purple but it was limited edition. In 2017 Schmincke picked up some of the colours from that Collection inc. PV15:6 Phthalo Sapphire which is great as both are lovely.

Thanks for the info. One possible reason for creating new pigments in this range would be better lightfastness, not sure if that applies to these or not. FYI, i am not going to let lightfast concerns keep me from using purples, I'll try to buy I or II rating, then not store those works in the living room window - he he.

Stephen Turner The LF is actually v good on Quinacridones - remember on a 4 point scale of 1 being best and 4 the worst, 4 is still fast for 15 years if displayed correctly. I have a video coming up next weekend on lightfastness and the vast misinformation out there inc. the people “proving the manufacturers are all lying” by doing tests taped to windows in full sunlight for 3 months (only a complete fool would display a painting like that!) forgetting the real tests are done to mimic display conditions and have constant temp, humidity etc. I take huge issue with the scaremongering that goes on as it causes people to get really fearful.

I suppose in certain situations (like where the artwork will be digitized), you might even seek out non lightfast , but super high chroma, pigments.

Stephen Turner Which is why gouache has always used low LF pigments as it doesn’t matter, gouache work is disposable. Tbh most of us won’t produce work that is displayed more than 50 yrs (a human lifetime really) which is what LF3 relates to so actually we should just pick things at that level for sale/gift and LF4 for 15 yr items. I have a painting done in Genuine Rose Madder (LF4) 20 years ago and some of it is hidden by the matte - every few years I take it out and you can barely see any fading even now - because it is displayed correctly and isn’t in bright sunlight or something stupid.

I LOVE purples but most seem to have lightfastness problems.

The bright ones and dye based ones do. I talk about lightfastness for the dioxazine specifically in my Color Spotlight. PV19s usually don't have lightfastness issues either :)

I really hate DS Imperial Purple . When applied with the “wet on wet” technique, the color breaks down and separates into pink and blue.
