EEK! I HAVE TWO THINGS TO QUICKLY APOLOGISE FOR! Firstly, you may have noticed that I got the pictures for 'Secrets of Mallory Towers' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' mixed up (could you get two more different books?). I don't know how this happened because I watched the whole video through after editing... I'm sorry for my negligence but I hope that you understand! Secondly, I did mean to upload this at 7am tomorrow but I published it early by accident. I hope that you enjoy it nonetheless! As promised, there are 5 uploads coming up this week in total!

Ruby Granger you should read the noughts and crosses series by malorie blackman! It’s stunningly written and is about racism and terrorism within a society and two friends Callum and sephy who are a nought (white) and a cross (brown/Black)and are told noughts and crosses can’t be friends and the book explores racism and terrorism in both their points of view.

AHH THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO EVER This is a strange request, but could you possibly do a video of explaining your opinion on growing up? I saw that you mentioned you were scared to grow up, and I relate so much, I’m still waiting for Peter Pan, haha. Idk, you don’t have to, I’d just be interested in what you have to say:)

Maybe I will film this video but it is something I find quite difficult to talk about (I was actually in therapy for a year because of it). I'm sure a time will come when I feel more comfortable discussing it publicly xx
@BlueEyedBlondie
@BlueEyedBlondie 6 жыл бұрын
I discussed the same issue with my counselor when I did therapy last year as well, so I know the exact feeling. It's hard for me to even think about or else I'll break down. Thank you for being honest. I hope one day you feel comfortable discussing it with us, as maybe it would help me feel somfortable to know that someone overcame the fear that I still have.
@TheMissShivi
@TheMissShivi 6 жыл бұрын
Ruby Granger I can relate so much to this issue, ever since I was 10 I’ve always wished I was younger and hated getting older. But now I’m 24 and wish when I was 14/15/16 I didn’t worry about age and ‘being too old’ to like certain things. And now I’m just having a quarter life crisis as I still feel like I’m 18 😅 I never ask people their age any more and try not to tell people mine if possible as I think as a society we judge people so much based on age and it just puts so much pressure on people

Shivi Crowley Sage advice! I made similar mistakes, and my anxieties disappeared into my 20s. But now I’m about to go into my 30s and am feeling frightened again for the first time. It might be a cyclical thing. But I think you’re right that it’s not good to let it dictate how you live your life. I’ve been thinking I may need to tackle those thoughts with devoted diary time to make sure that doesn’t happen though 😂

Taylor Stuckey, I really hated that book. The parents annoyed me. Their son spent the summer in the psych ward, yet come September they let him run around at all hours of the night and never ask were he was. Trust me, if your son ends up in the psych ward twice and your daughter has to get an abortion-all before they make it through high school-you screwed up as parents.

I don’t know if you’ve read this but I would like to recommend ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern. It’s about this game/competition going on between these two magician’s protégés, set up by the magicians themselves, set in a magical circus. It follows different characters from the creators of the circus (in the stages of creation) to the two competitors to guests at the circus, often in books with multiple perspectives one is less interesting but I loved each one of the different perspectives because they were all so interesting. The writing is also beautiful, and it makes the book seem magical which just makes it even better. Would thoroughly recommend!

Have you read The Theif Lord? I found it to be an amazing book and it's also interesting because it was not originally written in English. I was written in German and was translated in 2002. It's about two orphans, Prosper and Bo, on the run from their heartless aunt and uncle. They flee to Venice, where they join a group of children led by the mysterious Thief Lord. Detective Victor is hired to track down Prosper and Bo, and he begins to learn the secrets of the Thief Lord and his gang.

Ruby, you HAVE to check out *All The Light We Cannot See* - it won the Pulitzer Prize, and is about the entwining lives of a blind French girl and a brilliant, young German soldier during WW2. It's absolutely beautiful, with gorgeous prose, a moving story, and is one of my favorite books! Also, *The Far Pavilions* (which is soon to be an upcoming BBC series!) - it's about a British man, raised as Indian, who serves in the British Raj in 1800s India, and the struggle to discover who he is, and what side he is really on. It's fantastic, a great historical novel. And has a love story too! Finally, the classic, coming-of-age book, *A Tree Grows in Brooklyn* , about the daughter of immigrants in early 1900s America, and her daily life as she endures horrible poverty in search of a better tomorrow. Very realistic, moving, (plus a good study of female and parent-child relationships) and with a truly memorable main character.

The Winter Song by Jean-Claude Mourlevat is one of my favourite books of all time! Whenever I read it I fall more and more in love. A dystopian novel about children in a boarding school who try to find out what happened to their parents. Highly highly recommend and hope to see it on your bookshelves soon xx

Hello Ruby-- Thanks for all the great recommendations. I loved Me & Emma and I've not found too many other people who have read it. I'm so very pleased that you gave it a shout out on your channel. Have you read Cracks by Sheila Kohler? If you haven't, I would highly recommend it. I taught it to my freshmen writing class alongside the movie (which is different in some pretty radical but also pretty fascinating ways). Aside from some pretty lovely prose, the books touches on a number of themes that I saw recurring in this video. Hope you are having a great time at uni!

Love the suggestions! Also wanted to share some of my own to see if anyone has read them and if you haven't, they're all really incredible! Just a few of my favourites are 'Small Great Things' by Jodi Picoult, 'The Enchanted' by Rene Denfeld, 'We are all completely beside Ourselves' by Karen Joy Fowler and then Eva Ibbotson was one of my childhood favourite authors that I still read today because her books are just very well written and have incredible story lines.
