The two most underrated films I’ve seen this year are in the horror genre: 1. The Cursed: a Robert Eggers-esque atmospheric gem with werewolf mythology. 2. You Won’t be Alone: a dreamy, creepy horror drama about shape-shifting witches.

I’m here to co-sign - Hellbender is one of my all time favorites - it’s terrifying in a very texturized kind of way (I’m thinking of the foraging and the kk d of magic 🪄 in the film) and I loved the mother daughter dynamic in the film. Just perfection 👌🏾 I also heard a horror loving family made the film and the music was really good too!
@w4shep
@w4shep 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I was so surprised by how much I liked this movie. This family has created their own witch, I mean Hellbender, mythology and it's fantastic. I’m also a former thrash metal drummer and appreciated how well the music was and brilliantly incorporated into the story. Subtle, but great special effects - how it should be. And the cinematography was alive with motion and great.

I just saw 'You Won't be Alone' last night and that was an incredible and different take on witches. You're definitely right about Dashcam Emma, it's a very polarizing horror movie. I able to get a screener for 'See For Me' and that was better than I thought it would be.

@MasterOnion North I do agree with you about the bleak atmosphere but I believe the director did that to show the harsh life the Macedonians lived back then.

Where’d you get your statistical info? 🤣 I loved Malignant. Been hesitant with Dashcam but do want to check it out. I was hesitant with Malignant too and was kinda surprised I loved it.

Wow, everything in this list sounds worth watching to me.. and I spend more time on KZbin looking for recommendations or reviews than watching films. I really like deep thought mystery or horror the kind that helps me understand e observe the more obscure aspects of life and as usual this channel got me covered. Thank you for your unique taste in film and capacity to elaborate on films, you really are The reviewer that really has depth to her work.. I love your videos because you often transmit what your inner experience was with a film you don’t just give superficial explanations even in a short time. Truly a gem of a reviewer.

A great and underrated horror-comedy that I feel like no one's talking about is Sweetie, You Won't Believe It. I feel it went pretty quietly under the radar, but it's like a mix between The Hangover and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's on Amazon Prime (at least in the US) and it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it! It's one of my favorites of the year so far.

I watched The Innocents based on your dependable eye. It's more drama/sci-fi than horror or thriller but what a great movie. The way uncommon communication of the innocents(young/disabled) developed between the characters with increasing stakes was balanced, dramatic. It wasn't saccharin or predictable like most movies with similar premises can be. The mother was the same one from Thelma, another excellent Scandinavian production.

Thanks for the list, Emma. You've given me some more titles to get to. I did recently "X" and had a lot of fun watching it. The overall look of the film and the music was quite nostalgic for me, as I was twelve in 1979 (the year the film is set). So many good scenes, but can I just say that Ti West is a genius for the "Mia Goth and the creeping alligator" sequence?

Yes! Been dying to watch Maika Monroe in Watcher along with Crimes of The Future, but I also understand why they don't have wide release because maybe they're not confident that they'll earn in smaller territories. So we Australians and other countries are always going to expect limited releases or no releases. Including Nope which is a terrible 3 week delay from US.

Mad God is a trip. Amazing visuals. It's a stop-motion/live-action hybrid, pretty unusual but effective. It took 30 years to make because he stopped work on it for 20 years when Jurassic Park came out and he thought stop-action was dead. It's definitely one to check out, for those who haven't yet.

In my experience it’s never good when a film is postponed multiple time (Black Phone). Usually it means it doesn’t do well with test audiences ( which totally pisses me off). So most likely the editors will dumb it down and the film won’t be what the director intended. Anyway, love your channel and can’t wait for the rest of the year!

I watched You Won't Be Alone last night even though I remember you talking about some animal issues in a previous video. I decided to go in anyway after doing a little research. I had a different reaction than many people it seems. I felt that it was beautiful and touching, not dark or horrific at all. I read a review that called it "horror adjacent", which made me laugh. It didn't feel like a horror to me at all, more of an artsy folk drama. Big thumbs up from me!

Hi Emma, this is my first time watching your video. Horror isn’t my go-to genre but I wrote down 5 titles to check out (Mad God,You Won't Be Alone,The Innocents,The Daughter/La Hija,You Are Not My Mother) and actually saw one at a film festival last year, See for Me. I actually found you when looking for more confirmation on The Golden Glove. I removed it from my list. I subscribed and I’ll be back. Thanks!

There's another movie that came out this year named Dashcam. It's a cyber-horror film. I accidentally wound up watching the wrong movie. It wasn't bad, though, but it wasn't the one you mentioned. I can't find that one. 😂

I lovedddd X, Fresh, The Black Phone and See for Me! I think my favorite for the year has got to be Fresh though. As soon as I finished it I immediately restarted the movie and I’ve never had an experience like that!

Some of my favs are 'The Exocism of God', "La Abuela" I liked The New Texas Chainsaw Massacre" Halloween 2022 was also good. The K-Horror "Hellbound"was great. "Scream" was ok except except we get teased on a would be possible body count. Too many survivors. It might sound dark, bit I hope more deaths in Scream 6.. I also watch horror movies for the kill factor you know.

I'm annoyed I missed The Daughter but glad that I'm at least up to date with the rest! I definitely didn't get into You Are Not Alone or Mad God or Med as much as you but I think that's more of a personal taste thing because in each case I can absolutely admire the amazing craft behind them, I just didn't connect in the same way. I quite liked Shut In but afterwards found out who produced it and felt kinda icky 😆Suddenly I'm seeing all the red state thematic messaging in it

2:50 Hello creeps! Jenna Ortega just played the infamous Wednesday Addams in a Netflix reboot of the Addams Family. She basically stole the show on Wednesdays' re-enactments (along with Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester) and seems to really enjoy the creepy and spooky (and kooky). "Wednesday" starts off as dead-dead-pan horror-comedy but evolves into a truly scary mystery story while keeping the spirit of the original movies. You won't regret watching it (or anything Jenna Ortega puts her hands on).

I saw Men in theatres by myself on opening day and walked out AMAZED. I really loved it! I was completely shocked at how many people didn't like it, so I was very happy when you released your review to see I wasn't a monster haha
