The First Omen specially was the most surprising one for me. I expected literally NOTHING from that movie based on the terribly boring franchise it belongs to (minus the masterpiece that is the original) and it ended up being one of my favorites of the year. And totally one of my favorite movies directed by women.

I'm worried about Nosferatu. It feels like this year's theme for me was "movies that I like, some even a lot, that still feel like let-downs just because I don't love them as much the hype suggests I should". Films like Longlegs, Strange Darlings, Cuckoo, even The Substance.

Im surprised longlegs is even on this list. IMO, it didn't live up to the hype for me. But that's just me. Although, I will say, it certainly did a great job keeping an eerie feel all through the movie, but it was just underwhelming for me.

“Abigail” was great but yeah the way it played out made me wonder if the initial intention when it was written was for the audience to try and figure out the mystery of Valdez along with the characters and later on the marketing team thought no one would see it if they didn’t market it as Abigail being a vampire (flat out giving away the secret). I loved that movie but it could have been close to perfect if the marketing made it seem like a standard kidnapping movie only for it to be later revealed that Valdez is actually a vampiric little girl! Anyway, great video as always! 🙂✨

She really did! Phenomenal job. I watched the Idol too & may be one of the few that enjoyed it lol, but in Nosferatu she did really well. Notably w/ body movements. Her contortions & movement in the scene w/ Thomas before they… ya know… was CRAZY!

I really wanted to like Longlegs. I did. But it was such a let down for me. I didn’t like that it went Supernatural/Religious at all & wished it would have stuck more to the element of true crime.

I think Nosferatu was a beautiful movie. It was very well acted, especially from our leads (Lily, William, Nicholas, and Bill in that order to me). The movie to me was just a little boring for my liking. I honestly mind heavy dialog films, as long as the dialog and storyline can keep me from saying, ok, something needs to happen, and it just didn't work for me. Heretic is in my top 3, and that movie is pretty much all dialog. Im not saying it's a bad movie, but it's definitely not a great movie. 5/10 for me

I recently saw "The Substance" a second time. The last 20 minutes made more sense the 2nd time. It had to go there. We see this beautiful person and suddenly, we get one repulsive image after another. It happens to us all, just not quite so fast. Brilliant and unforgettable final shot. I hope it gets some Oscars.

SPOILERS...... I was talking about Longlegs tonight - the storyline ruined it for me. I wish they'd kept him as a psychotic child kller - the demon dolls?! No thanks. All of the terrifying atmosphere was destroyed by that, for me. And before that, it was perfect - creepy, unnerving, horrible then just blah

I am so glad to see The Devil's Bath so high on your list. It will be high on my list as well. I think 2024 will go down as one of those golden years people look back on with reverence. As of today, The Substance is also my number 1 movie, but I haven't seen Nosferatu yet. I will finalize my list once I have done that.

Excellent list! I loved Longlegs and thought it was absolutely terrifying. Alicia Witt was so good. The Substance had the perfect cast and perfect body horror. Abigail was amazing and Melissa Barrera needs more roles. I would also recommend Alien: Romulus. Fede Alvarez keeps making incredible movies. Thanks for sharing!

What a great top ten! Nice to see Late Night with the Devil on your list- I really loved that movie! Quiet Place Day One is another movie many others left off their list but I felt like it was a heart felt movie and I loved the edition of the cat- he was a super star! Nosferatu was amazing- atmospheric- beautiful- haunting- and he was so very creepy!

My biggest gripe with The Substance was when we see arthritis set in I wouldn't have thought she would have been able to run like she did. I don't know if I like Longlegs or not. You do seem to be correct in that a lot of people either love it or hate it. I'm on the fence. My favorite movie of the year is The First Omen. That movie surprised me.

The Substance changed me on a fundamental level. I felt something shift in my DNA as I watched it. The body horror is top notch of course but on top of that it said so much about the price of keeping up with beauty standards and performing femininity. This is such a special film that it can have a lot to say and be gross and over the top in the same beat

If you liked Mads, you need to watch Bliss 2019. It feels like Mads was inspired by that movie, and it has neon, heavy metal and a beautiful synth soundtrack to boot :)

The substance was a great film. I would've prefer the ending sequence to be a bit shorter, but everything up to that point was just a pleasant dosage of apprehension I like to get from these types of films.

I’m bummed I didn’t see the quiet place in a theater because that seems like a way better experience for something quiet like that. I had a hard time staying focused and ended up turning it off halfway through. I’ll give it another shot!

So mesmerized by Naomi Scott's performance in Smile2. On 5th or 6th watch. So nuanced, so forceful ... so perfect. Interesting some who like Smile didn't like Smile2. Only thing that put me off is the demon at the end ... not its grotesqueness or malevolent smile, rather it was the lack of exploration. The side view below its mouth was so muddled I had no idea what it was until I heard an explanation. 100% with you on Quiet Place 3. That performance by Lupita, especially the first 15 minutes, moved me deeply. Loved the cat's centrality in the movie too. Like you, love spiritual horror, but it is beyond me what people see in Late Night with the Devil. The script, the acting, the effects never drew me in … the vision of D at the end was not D-worthy. Longlegs does a better job of that. The Substance wins hands down for originality. Demi drew from every ounce of her tremendous experience for her character. The last 20 minutes detracted from what could've been a great movie. Thank you for being a voice advocating horror movies!
