Every time I hear people say water Hoya more often, I want to give a thumb up 👍 Since I started to water my hoyas more often this summer, they are definitely growing more actively.

For almost 3 years I have been growing Hoya and in the first year I would have disagreed with you . However now, with more experience, I do agree with you and I appreciate your words of wisdom. One can imagine Hoya living as vines in trees with very little soil so they don’t like sitting in water but they are used to being rained on almost every day. They like much light and some air movement. The proof is in the pudding: you plants look great! Thanks so much!

I love your hoya collection and care tips. No discussion on fertilizer and would love to know your DIY pon recipe. Right now I’m using well draining mix but a little too well draining. Also found stratum works great for root growth on cuttings

I agree 100% about the watering. I have a water meter which I don't even have to use anymore because I noticed that when it reached the beginning of the red zone exactly at one week. I water my Hoyas the same day (if possible) every week and they never stop growing. I also fertilized every other week if there is any growth present.

You have beautiful Hoyas :) I totally agree with you on the watering part. I never wait for the leaves to go wrinkly. My hoyas are all doing well and are growing ferociously. I water most of them about once a week. Some candidates like Caudata and Mindorensis want water a bit more frequently. The only guys that I water once in two weeks are the Wayettii (this one just doesn't seem to want a lot of water) and the Carnosa which is in a huge pot.

What kind of water do you use?Tap water,filtered water, soft water, rain water ⋯?
@walle5667
@walle5667 2 жыл бұрын
@@zionlee175 I use tap water. Keep in mind I live in Germany and here the water has no chlorine. It is hard water, though, so some sensitive plants like peace lilies and spider plants get crispy tips, but otherwise they're fine :) Hoyas are doing splendidly, they don't mind the lime residue in the water.

@@walle5667 Any Fluorine in tap water? Do you let water stay 2~3 days to release Fluorine?
@walle5667
@walle5667 2 жыл бұрын
@@zionlee175 There is no added flourine in the tap water. I do not let it sit, I water the plants right out of the tap. You could use rain water if you are suspicious of your tap water.

Jealous of this collection! How do you, personally, flush without drainage holes? I’ve tried it before. Do you just have to be extra careful, and let the water flow out the top, while you try to contain the substrate as best you can? lol. That’s what I’ve done; but then I ended up saying “F it”, and just drilling holes. hahaha. Actually my new obsession is - a soldering iron! 😂 Lol, making all kinds of plastic bowls and cups and stuff into semi-hydro pots 😇. Can make them look like orchid pots, covered in air holes. But anyway. Lmk your method if possible! Thx!

They might have gotten root rot if you don’t feel the leaves firming back up after watering! You might check the roots!❤️❤️❤️ I find if you let them get too critically dry, the roots will dry up, then when you water they will rot.😭

If Hoyas are getting higher light and temps you do need to water them more. Really depends on your conditions. Great knowledge and video
@erikm8372

I would think (on the most basic level) the answer is “yes” because generally that’s the case for all plants… increased light would mean increase the water, buuuuut gotta be careful. I wouldn’t necessarily say yes, water them more; bc there are just too many differences in each person’s garden, collection, where they live, etc. and each individual Hoya can be a diva compared to the next one! Even from the same species. I had two _H. australis_ that I bought from the same shop, on the same day, but they behaved totally differently. Basically, if the soil looks or feels dry, or if the pot is lightweight when you pick it up, then those are telltale signs it’s time for watering… but Hoyas, of course, love drying out between waterings. They’re basically succulent vines, but a little more tropical than most succs. I recommend buying a moisture meter. Like $10. They can be a real helper for gardeners. Plenty of times Ive wanted to water a plant, and I think it’s the right time, until I test it w the moisture meter… I’ll be shocked to see it’s like, 75% saturated already. Lol, but the top layer looks dry. If I hadn’t tested it w the meter, I may have drowned that plant! I also think gravel or sand as a too dressing is good, it keeps flies away and keeps humidity in the soil longer.

None of my plants in Pon have drainage holes for the most part. I'm not sure how well it would work, it all depends on your environment! If your plants get good light and heat, I bet you could do it too with no problem! I just water when I notice the containers are empty and fill them about 1/4 of the way!

LOVED this video! I got straight up and chopped my Chelsea ! I needed to hear that🤣 I wanted to for weeks. Do you think it matters if you cut newer growth or old? I have chopped all my Hoyas for years but I always feel like I should wait. It's a bummer when you get new growth and the leaves are so small so I'd like to avoid that issue. Thanks for the tips!
@MyPlantedParadise
@MyPlantedParadise 2 жыл бұрын
If the leaves are still little babies when you cut, they will most likely fall off. But if they are at the normal size and maybe just not hardened off all the way, they usually will pull through!! I havent seen that it matters on growth based on new vines being cut vs. older, however the older cutting will probably take longer to push new growth

How many time you have to clean the pots (bols) ? Often or not ? And what do you use for fertilizing?
@MyPlantedParadise

It depends on how much light they are exposed to! The algae will develop much faster in brighter light situations. I like to clean them maybe once a month. I use water soluable orchid fertilizer, all purpose liquid fertilizer, and fish fertilizer for my hoyas! 🥰
