When I was young (teenager, young adult), I used to get very anxious when people asked my what type of music I listened too. I wasn't necessarily worried that they would make fun of me if they disagreed, but it was just too personal for me to share. Listening to music was like escaping to my own little island. I'm sure I was self-conscious about it too, but I felt like if they knew what I liked then they were peeking into my soul. Too philosophical? Too deep? Probably. I'm a lot more laid back now and proud of the eclectic tastes I have in music. Love your channel. Never know what you are going to talk about next. Keep it up!
@howdyimvictoria3 жыл бұрын
I love the way you put that, I especially relate to the music being your own little island. That’s how it should be, and you should be able to share or not share whatever pieces and parts of that island that you want to without someone passing judgements onto you about it. There’s lots of music and musical experiences I have that I like to keep between myself & I, and it’s just as important to me if not more so than the things I share on here and with people in day to day life, too. I’m so happy you found the channel, I am glad to open up a communal musical island!! Lol thank you for the kind word & sharing your experience, this is exactly why I want to have the channel to begin with.

i completely agree with you on your disco take! i genuinely can’t understand how people can think it’s a bad genre by any means; it’s so funky and soulful! i feel like a lot of people have a similar dislike or stigma for older music in general nowadays just because it’s ‘old’ or sounds too much like a certain era (not everyone thinks this of course but i’ve definitely seen this pop up)
@howdyimvictoria3 жыл бұрын
Right!! They never give any reasoning, they just say they don’t like it. I feel like younger generations haven’t been re-introduced to the best parts of music before they were here. I grew up with a musician mom, so I listened to everything and was raised on whatever she was in the mood for and that spilled into my own way of finding music. Slowly but surely a new appreciation will arise, I think that’s going to be a really fun moment in the music industry again.
@prinsauce3 жыл бұрын
what you said about artists not owing fans to stick to one genre, that reminds me of how that’s almost like a taboo in the metalheads community. like you have these amazing huge bands that changed the face of metal, and then there’s a good chunk of their fanbase complaining about their music becoming “soft” over the years. i personally don’t think it’s creatively healthy to make the same kind of music over and over. especially, if you as an artist have been around for more than a decade, some change is bound to happen because as artists grow and evolve, so does their art. not only that but artists today have to accommodate with the pace in music. considering how accessible and easy it’s become to create new stuff these days, as great as that sounds, that’s led to an unfortunate over-saturation of the market. it’s turned into this machine that has to pop out new stuff left, right and center. and since music is mostly about virality right now (unfortunately), artists basically have to keep up with it if they don’t want to get left behind. because fans can and will move on to other artists. anyway, that was a long winded way of saying that artists should be, in fact, encouraged to explore different genres. it’s not only creatively stimulating but also opens doors for more fans to know them as well. think taylor swift or metallica (literally, that’s how they became mainstream). sorry for the rant. lol

And if its that important for you to know what its saying try to find a translation. Like you said music is a feeling, so I can't see why someone would hate a song simply because of the language in which its sung.

A few thoughts: I'm not a Nickelback fan... but they got some good tunes. I'm a bigger fan of the older, heavier stuff that didn't get played to death on the radio, but I'm biased towards heavy music anyway, so... take that for what it's worth lol. Also, How You Remind Me was overplayed to hell, but it really is an excellent song. I just didn't realize it until I had a few years of not hearing it constantly, and it just happened to play on the radio at work one day. Changed my view of the song in a single listen. Audio fidelity =/= song quality. Look at any album by the Strokes or Queens Of The Stone Age: deliberately lofi, and still great music! I'd love to make an album that was designed specifically to be recorded on the old 78 rpm shellac records. Anyone remember those? Definitely not high fidelity, but it would be fun to make it work! Also, not a big disco fan personally... but I'd be lying if I said I didn't bop to Boney M and Abba when I was a kid lol. Genre has become an almost meaningless term in recent years. You got rappers making metal, metal bands making rap, jazz musicians making electronica, styles getting fused and amalgamated left right and centre... and it's glorious! Ps. Gatekeepers of any genre can piss off.
@user-rv7ge1tc4l3 жыл бұрын
so would you say you're against music critiquing in any form? (album ratings etc)
@howdyimvictoria3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Critiquing music is one thing, shitting on someone's work is another. You can disagree with an artistic choice and also have an understanding that taste is subjective and just because I don't like something, doesn't mean it's bad. No matter what sound comes out, someone on the other end probably had a lot of feelings go into it as well as a lot of work - and when you keep that in mind, I personally find myself just appreciating the music rather than looking for things that are wrong with it. Some songs or albums just aren't for me, but I can almost always find a friend or acquaintance I think would like it. Maybe I am against critique and for conversation? I honestly don't know, the whole concept of critique is subjective too. I like this question now I'm gonna keep thinking about this lol
@user-rv7ge1tc4l3 жыл бұрын
@@howdyimvictoria lmao ikr? Generally, music is a weird thing to critique since there aren't any objective guidelines (except for when you are required to follow a certain structure). I am always asking myself what makes people on pitchfork (for example) qualified to critique artists' songs. I also loved how you made it clear that there's a difference between being a fan of the artist and being a fan of some of their work. I was quite disappointed when Lorde released Solar Power last year, and that made me realize that I might have been a fan of her Melodrama album individually since it fit a certain time in my life. So that was an interesting observation :)
@howdyimvictoria3 жыл бұрын
@@user-rv7ge1tc4l It’s an important and cool observation to come to!! The importance comes in how your personal relationship with that artist or their music relates to your life & the parasocial relationship you experience there. Like I’m much more inclined to critique the choices of an artist I have followed throughout their entire career and enjoyed the majority of their music. Does that make sense? Lol

I think that Nickelback gets so much hate because of how hard they leaned into the style of their like 5 year popularity span.
