my parents took me deep sea fishing when I was 8. I noticed that whenever someone caught a fish, the fish guides would CRUSH THEIR HEAD WITH A HAMMER. The whole floor of the boat was red, the poor fish were flopping over piles of their dead friends in a dark box with major injuries. I asked the fishing guide if I caught one, that they wouldn't do that to the fish, and he said "well, I will if it's big enough." I was lucky I caught a small one, so consider yourself lucky too!

i went on a fishing trip with my dad and uncle when i was younger, and it was the worst experience in my entire life. we got caught in a storm on our way back to land, and i fell overboard in the sea. i straight-up almost drowned! like, i had to be resuscitated and everything because i almost died!!! i've always had a slight fear of the ocean, but that event really solidified it for me. it's been a little over 10 years since then, and i still have nightmares about it to this day. the ocean was just so cold and dark, i couldn't see anything. i was also really disoriented so i wasn't sure about which way the surface was. truly the most horrifying thing i've ever experienced.

Reminds me of how I discovered my fear of deep water, I’m not afraid of not seeing what’s beneath me, I’m afraid of the heights. I was swimming in a local boil (natural spring with sand boil bubbles) with a deep pit that local divers would photograph (about 40 feet deep) and as I was casually floating across the top I happened to not notice I was hovering above the well. So I looked down and instead of seeing the floor 6 feet beneath me- I saw 40 feet straight down (probably more because I was on the surface) in crystal clear water where the divers looked tiny in scale and it horrified young teenage me because even though I knew I wouldn’t fall it I guess suspended my sense of disbelief because I got all the nausea and terror one who’s afraid of heights would experience. And yet I’m not afraid of actual heights on land

Usually holding people by the hips/thighs is because they think you might fall overboard, they do this to guys too if they think the dude is too light. This is especially true with deep sea fishing where the fish can be 4-5 feet long. I've had the pleasure of hearing tales where some guy who weighed 60kg got pulled into the ocean by a sailfish because he didn't know when to cut his line.

You know I grow up a lot with my dad going fishing and bringing fish to home to eat, so I know what it’s like to catch one. I even experienced myself a few times, but you didn’t experience seeing your parents gutting the fish whole in your backyard . Pulling the guts, bladder, sometimes eggs if it’s female, and even the heart that is still beating. Let just say when first exposure to this as a kid that my reaction wasn’t being afraid seeing the blood or gutting the fish out no I was more fascinated by touching all the intestines. Guess that wouldn’t be more traumatize for you to witness it.
