I am very excited that there might be another Wuthering Heights adaptation - I just hope it's good!

I love the idea of you reading Black Beauty and drawing lots of horses! And yes can see the identification with Agnes Grey and teaching. I hope none of the children you were teaching were torturing puppies though.

have to agree, Gaskell is so accessible and easy to get along with whilst also addressing some really important social issues from the time, much better than Dickens! I studied a lot of Gaskell for my dissertation at Uni but never managed to visit her old house, despite living so close by! perhaps I'll do this on my next trip home to Manchester 🤍
@spreadbookjoyАй бұрын
You should definitely do that! I love Gaskell’s social commentary and she is just a great storyteller!

Hey Jack. I don't think I ever commented since I found your channel a couple of months ago. Just wanted to hop in here and say your love for books is really shining through the videos you're making. Also, you have the most calming voice ever, and it's a pleasure to just listen to you talk when I am stressed out of my mind with work. That's that. Thanks for the lovely videos :)

Good advise on spoilers. Even as an experienced Victorian literature reader, who hates spoilers, I got done over by a Penguin classic of Wives and Daughters this year because they tricked me by putting the spoiler in a footnote in the middle of the book. The rest of Sherlock Holmes is better than Study in Scarlet, more like the start and end and less of the middle bit.
@spreadbookjoyАй бұрын
Oh, no! That is the worst! Can't even trust a footnote! I am excited to hear that the rest of the Sherlock Holmes books are more like my favourite parts of ASiS. I read The Hound of the Baskervilles many years ago, so my memories of that are vague but I remember enjoying it. Looking forward to more!

I'm not really a fan of Victorian literature, although I have partaken of it at times. H. G. Wells is probably my favourite author from that particular time period.
@spreadbookjoyАй бұрын
@@MrRosebeing a great author! I read some HG Wells when I was younger - The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. What an imagination he had!

I loved Buffy and read a lot of Anne Rice novels. I haven't read many Victorian novels. My favorite is Dracula. I read Carmilla in October. I was a little disappointed in it.

Black Beauty is too sad to reread. Choosing the first line of A Christmas Carol was inspired. Penguin Classics are particularly bad for spoilers in blurbs and introductions. I must look at Audrey now I am using audio books more.
@spreadbookjoyАй бұрын
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks I suspect adult me would find Black Beauty far more affecting than I did as a child! Do try Audrey - they are a tiny team doing wonderful work in a market place that is dominated by audible and I hope they continue to grow. They also have a free copy of Mrs Dalloway if you fancy trying something without committing.
