Any company that saves the manual gets my vote. I actually really like the XSE Manual Hatch too. Toyota deserves huge kudos for this car, especially for the iMT and new CVT. Most major automotive magazines could care less what Toyota does. They see every car they make as an “appliance”, and falsely so. I think this is easily among the best in class and would be my vote despite its minuscule size.

This would be great for a daily driver. I looked at Auto Trader and found plenty of these XSE manual hatches for just under 22K which is a pretty good bargain for a car you can probably drive 300k miles. Love that Toyota uses dual injection for enhanced reliability instead of the basic direct injection with all the carbon issues. Well done Toyota.

I was wondering about that! Glad to hear they still have that in these newer engines. Honda's been very disappointing with their new engines/quality and I'm worried Toyota will follow suit. Lucky, at least here, it hasn't. I heard they had to recall the CVT model already...

Why oh why won’t Toyota make the big-time JBL audio system available for the manual trim? To me, it seems that manual drivers would want and pay for a booming audio system.
@ackables
@ackables 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely annoying, but I've looked online and you can get aftermarket speakers that are $100 a pair and replacement tweeters for $100 a pair. If you don't mind taking it to a shop, you could probably put a nicer sound system than the jbl in there for less money.

I bought this car when I traded in my trusty 10 year old Matrix. Love it !!! I have always driven only manual (for over 40 years now) and I must say that this is the smoothest shifter I have ever driven. The Matrix felt like a truck in comparison ! To be honest, I could have done without the some of the computerized bells and whistles that come with the car (I really only use the "tablet" for music and while backing up and never bother with the intelligent shift option or the brake "hold" … but not an issue that there are what, for me, are superfluous "extras"). The Matrix, of course, was bigger and higher off the ground but this car is more of a pleasure to drive. If I had a complaint to make, it would only be that that audio input and power outlet (lighter) jacks are awkwardly placed and difficult to find in low light. The armrest is also too far back to get into easily. Minor details. All in all, I look forward to driving this car for the next 10 years :-)

To see a person who drives a Mustang GT get enthusiastic about a Corolla is quite a revelation. Too bad Toyota Motor Corporation has declared war on taller drivers with reduced head and leg room in the new hatch and sedan. I wish we got the Corolla wagon sold in Europe that offers adequate space for drivers over 6 feet, their adult passengers and their gear. #WeWantWagons.

Thought I'd chime in with my experience. I just went the other day to test drive a 6 speed 2020 SE sedan the other day. All in all I really like it, but a serious issue I had was the clutch. Uptake on it is VERY high in the travel, to the point where you think you're slipping the clutch everytime you shift. It's a little odd. Matt made the same comment here and I completely agree. It was definitely far higher than any car I've had. EVO X and e90 3 series, but even much higher than a manual, regular Ford Fiesta I had. It is a pretty serious turn off.

No dude. Businesses only look at who is buying their product from them. Cars manufactures only cater to new trends of buyers/leasers because that's who gives them money. They see literally ZERO dollars from 2nd hand car sales. It's the same how EA sees zero revenue from used video game sales. Why do you think the manuals are dying? Because nobody is buying them new. @@Toyota4Life my family bought Toyotas for 50 years. Yes, 28k for a mediocre Corolla is a bad value. Unlike a fanboy like you, we actually owned Toyotas for longer than you been alive. I still own a 1974 Corona SR with a JDM 18R-G, and a 1984 Toyota Celica Supra, as reminders of my Childhood. The highest quality Toyotas were the one built in the 1990's. Current Toyotas may be reliable, but are overpriced with average quality and build assembly. Some of us know Toyotas from the ground up. I can look you in the eye and say with confidence, this New XSE is not worth 28k. My 2005 Corolla XRS was more fun and was only 16k when I bought that new. This Corolla does nothing to excite me. The quality is lacking.

@@rightlanehog3151 I got this car after driving my Matrix for 10 years. True, it is much smaller and has less trunk space. On the flip side, it is a much smoother, slicker, ride and the manual transmission feels great . Whether the smaller size is OK for you depends on how many people you generally drive around and what you tend to haul around. For me, it's more than roomy enough and the trunk can easily handle shopping trips and such.

@@gabithemagyar Great points.. A small percentage of Matrix/Vibe models were equipped with an independent rear suspension and upgraded engine but generally the Matrix was much more utilitarian. I think the seat height is also a big factor for taller drivers. I have been driving my Vibe for 14 years and it would be a big change to sit as low as the new hatch's level. Of course the new Corolla wagon would offer the best of both worlds if they would sell it to us. I hope your new Corolla is as reliable as your Matrix!

Everyone keeps saying that. I agree, the chassis is capable of handling a lot more power. At the end of the day, it's Toyota and it's a Corolla. The fact they took it this far is a good first step.. Their bread and butter is reliable and fuel efficient cars.. I think they made this half step into the hot hatch arena to see how people take it. It's risky to jump in with that pricy of a Corolla right off. Toyota knows what they are doing and will turn the volume up to 11 if the market shows sales for it..

It may not look great, but I find that having the large display up at that height means I can see what's on it (e,g, GPS map) with a small, almost just sideways, flick of my eyes rather than having to take my eyes off the road to look down. It's large enough that I never have to stare at it to pick out what I am looking for.

If you want a manual car but just dont like Hondas ugly styling and want to be more sedate :) Would have never clicked on this if the title hadnt said MANUAL :) manuals are getting rare across the world for performance and emissions reasons. I heard Toyota is coming back to europe with some nicer cars than before, all we got in germany for years was just junk for elderly people, underpowered hybrids and ugly styling....
@rightlanehog3151
@rightlanehog3151 5 жыл бұрын
Hybrids account for roughly half of Toyota's sales in Europe and that will only increase with Diesel diving in popularity. At least Toyota has invested in their new platforms to greatly increase handling capability over earlier generations. It is unfortunate that Toyota does not offer their more powerful engines in the E.C.. As for ugliness, there is nothing uglier than a repair bill on a German, French or Italian car.

I did not already looked and tested the 2019 Corolla and especially its engine. But (only subjective) I am sure the new one (engine) is much "better" than the 1,3 with the 6-speed manual (I talk of the German one). Of course: In the city you can cruise at 50 km / h (about 30 mph) in 5 th gear. But for motorway or overtaking trucks / other cars it is not made. It has about 100 HP but nevertheless of course: but because of it has no turbo under 2.500 / 3000 rpm there is no fun. In my opinion it is too much downsized. I remember older cars (1,8 or 2 l petrol) with about 100 HP without turbo as well. There you felt the power much more. My conclusion / opinion for the old one: The old 1,3 l petrol engine is not great. I hope and am looking for to get a free date to check out the new one as lately as possible (maybe the hybrid, too). Thank you for your review! It has reminded me to test the new Corolla.
