Any company that saves the manual gets my vote. I actually really like the XSE Manual Hatch too. Toyota deserves huge kudos for this car, especially for the iMT and new CVT. Most major automotive magazines could care less what Toyota does. They see every car they make as an “appliance”, and falsely so. I think this is easily among the best in class and would be my vote despite its minuscule size.

I bought this car when I traded in my trusty 10 year old Matrix. Love it !!! I have always driven only manual (for over 40 years now) and I must say that this is the smoothest shifter I have ever driven. The Matrix felt like a truck in comparison ! To be honest, I could have done without the some of the computerized bells and whistles that come with the car (I really only use the "tablet" for music and while backing up and never bother with the intelligent shift option or the brake "hold" … but not an issue that there are what, for me, are superfluous "extras"). The Matrix, of course, was bigger and higher off the ground but this car is more of a pleasure to drive. If I had a complaint to make, it would only be that that audio input and power outlet (lighter) jacks are awkwardly placed and difficult to find in low light. The armrest is also too far back to get into easily. Minor details. All in all, I look forward to driving this car for the next 10 years :-)

I do review old cars from time to time when I can. I already did an automatic G37. I'd love to review a manual version but haven't had any owners offer one to me yet.
@brunojones4125 жыл бұрын
Matt Maran Motoring do you travel for car reviews?
@MattMaranMotoring5 жыл бұрын
I do whenever I have time. The closer they are to Pittsburgh, the quicker I can do it. I have pretty long wait lists of cars in other areas, but I'm hoping to film a lot of them this year.

Actually, I like it. It may not look great, but I find that having the large display up at that height means I can see what's on it (e,g, GPS map) with a small, almost just sideways, flick of my eyes rather than having to take my eyes off the road to look down. It's large enough that I never have to stare at it to pick out what I am looking for.

How does it compare to the WRX?
@MattMaranMotoring5 жыл бұрын
Lighter, more fun handling than a WRX, just less power.
@agaad225 жыл бұрын
Toyota screwed up by not giving this a turbo. I’d still take the Civic Hatchback sport over it because of the powertrain.

If you want a manual car but just dont like Hondas ugly styling and want to be more sedate :) Would have never clicked on this if the title hadnt said MANUAL :) manuals are getting rare across the world for performance and emissions reasons. I heard Toyota is coming back to europe with some nicer cars than before, all we got in germany for years was just junk for elderly people, underpowered hybrids and ugly styling....
@rightlanehog31515 жыл бұрын
Hybrids account for roughly half of Toyota's sales in Europe and that will only increase with Diesel diving in popularity. At least Toyota has invested in their new platforms to greatly increase handling capability over earlier generations. It is unfortunate that Toyota does not offer their more powerful engines in the E.C.. As for ugliness, there is nothing uglier than a repair bill on a German, French or Italian car.

@sashapilz66535 жыл бұрын
I did not already looked and tested the 2019 Corolla and especially its engine. But (only subjective) I am sure the new one (engine) is much "better" than the 1,3 with the 6-speed manual (I talk of the German one). Of course: In the city you can cruise at 50 km / h (about 30 mph) in 5 th gear. But for motorway or overtaking trucks / other cars it is not made. It has about 100 HP but nevertheless of course: but because of it has no turbo under 2.500 / 3000 rpm there is no fun. In my opinion it is too much downsized. I remember older cars (1,8 or 2 l petrol) with about 100 HP without turbo as well. There you felt the power much more. My conclusion / opinion for the old one: The old 1,3 l petrol engine is not great. I hope and am looking for to get a free date to check out the new one as lately as possible (maybe the hybrid, too). Thank you for your review! It has reminded me to test the new Corolla.
@rightlanehog31515 жыл бұрын
Europe's new Corolla has a 1.2 turbo engine with adequate levels of power.
