For years, I've been wanting to learn how to drive a manual. I'm 34 years old, and I just don't feel like waiting around anymore. I'm at a point where I can easily afford a second car. This video just sold me on taking that step to buy the Corolla Hatchback. So happy that the car is set up so that it's easy to learn a manual on!

@@subvet3668 Yeah, I'm really looking forward to learning to drive a manual! I plan on buying a manual Corolla sometime next year. I don't believe in financing cars, so I need a little bit of time to save up the cash. I actually live next door to a Walgreens store. So, when they close for the night, I can practice in their parking lot before I attempt to drive in the street. Also, I'll never sell my current car. So, if it takes me a long time to master driving stick, that's okay, I can take my time.
@subvet36685 жыл бұрын
hamsterama, I’ll tell ya what, I bought my first manual car and the salesman had to tell me what to do. It took 5 minutes before the basics were down well and by the next day it was as natural as breathing. Modern cars with their lighter clutches and smoother gearboxes make it even easier. With Toyota’s IMT auto rev matching, it’s probably the easiest and smoothest ever produced, nearly stall proof. That IMT function will make you look like an old Pro Hero within a day if not sooner. I’m seriously considering getting one for a daily driver next year. Another comforting thought about this car is it uses Dual injection which is more reliable than the direct injection engines used by so many others. It doesn’t get the carbon buildup problems. This car will probably be good for 300k miles easy.
@hamsterama5 жыл бұрын
@@subvet3668 The last time I tried to drive stick was over ten years ago. It was on my parents' 1990 Plymouth Voyager. I kept stalling it out. My parents forced me to give up because they were afraid I would burn up the clutch (and I don't blame them lol). I couldn't get it to not stall. That's why I'm excited about Toyota's IMT. That makes stalling a non-issue. The rev match feature is also pretty awesome. My dad offered to go with me to test drive the car and to give me lessons, so if I have any trouble, at least he can help me out. Oh, and I'm with you on favoring Toyota's dual injection engines. The direct injection and carb issues is what's scaring me away from Honda.

Enjoy what you like, but for me a hot hatch is something that is fun to drive and doesn't look like it was slapped with an ugly stick ... It thought it was a good review. I have just bought the Australian equivalent which I will get in two weeks. It is the Corolla ZR and is basically the same spec with the same wheels and leather seats. Obviously this is right hand drive too. I do find some odd differences though and I cant work out why they are mot the same. The Aussie models do not have apple car play or android. The ZR only comes with the direct CVT and only the base model has a 6 speed as standard. The Aussie ZR does have rear air conditioning vents and rear USB. Cant work out why all the countries do not have similar featues. Most reviews are critical of two areas, Rear seat space and trunk space. Lets be honest, you don't buy a small car for 4 adults as you would need a larger vehicle. The trunk isnt big but that is really not an important feature as the car is for my wife and I. Does the car look great and sporty??? Well I think so butt that is just subjective so others will think differently. It is certainly not hot like a golf gti or a golf R but that also doesn't matter to me? Sporty cars are ok but on a public road you can't really use them . Toyota is relaible and cheap to service and that is important to me. It certainly doesnt look dull. Buying any car is a compromise and for me the Corolla is the best compromise. I liked the idea of a 1.6 turbo for low down torque but the golf and Kia Cerato GT are costly to service. My son,has a Golf R and is super quick, apart from getting up to the speed limit a lot quicker it really is a waste unless you like speeding tickets.

Toyota did an awesome job on the new Toyotas with the TNGA platform chassis, including the Corolla models. This hatchback is really nice, but I am going to say, like the Honda Civic Sport Sedan, I like the Corolla XSE sedan better, but I would be happy with this hatchback, as is, especially with the cargo space, because it has the higher cargo clearance like the Honda HR-V Sport, sans the magic seats, for about the same price, with much more power and driving dynamics. I know this is basically a carryover of the Scion hatchback with great updates and revisions, and finally decent power from a reliable non turbo engine with automatic and manual transmission options. The automatic has that physical first gear, and I believe paddle shifters, but I would opt for this manual for reliability, durability and longevity, along with the awesome rev matching feature. There may be aftermarket short throw shifter kits, but for learners and it's well thought out design and ergonomics like you mentioned, it may be better just to leave it as is. The extra movement may be what makes this car more fun to drive. Major zonk for the fake dual exhaust ports, but other than that, I really like it. Maybe consider it over the HR-V Sport, Civic Sport Sedan and Corolla XSE sedan for the cargo utility, driving dynamics and top of the line sport trim for about the price of the above mentioned Honda models that are on my primary serious list. I generally do not like lighter colored seats, though my Impala SS had the light grey, instead of the black. I would take this as is, it looks nice, and like my SS, seats are cooler. Yes, you get the top of the line XSE over the Civic Sport Sedan with less horsepower, and well equipped, and even less power on the HR-V Sport, so this, or the XSE Sedan is a serious consideration at this price point. But I would have to get the upgraded optional height output JBL sound system, that is worth it. The lack of Android Auto is not a thing now, though if a future software update to add it is feasible, that would be great. I would probably be putting music on a USB flash drive., or portable CD player if it has an auxiliary audio input jack. Also, the Camry XSE has the available high output JBL sound system with a CD player. My ideal Toyota right now other than the Rav4 Adventure or TRD, would be a Camry XSE 4 Cylinder. That has the 8 speed auto, awesome handling, and though not the V6, is not as nose heavy, and still a lot of power. Yes, this is not a high horsepower hot hatch, but power is more than decent, especially compared to the previous generation Corolla, along with all the other updates and design improvements. And like the Civic Sport Sedan, it's a win because it is perfect for the large consumer base to have a balance of all the good stuff, and the reliability factor with the potential to last 100-400K + miles. And yes, no need for the red disc brake calipers, this is not that high performance hot hatch. The wheel/tire combination and body styling is pristine as is. For any car with gloss or painted black roof B pillars, one should consider the clear vinyl protective coating to prevent fingerprints and wear to the finish. And a real, stock diameter spare tire is a plus over the fix a flat kits. But yes, I have to seriously consider these two Corolla XSE models along with the Civic Sport Sedan and HR-V Sport. Great video as always. And with all the awesome other vehicles with prices going through the roof, or super huge, and with mucho maintenance, registration, parts and repair expenses, plus potential problems for those less reliable, those Honda models and these two Corollas are probably the best of the best cost effective, quality, reliable, and satisfying choices for the price point, under $25K range.

Mistake for Toyota to market as a hot hatch. It's the latest Matrix, and that's a good thing. The TNGA platform and new 2.0 Dynamic Force engine improves Performance and Milage without scarifying durability thanks to NA and combo port+direct injection. I test drove one. Like it. - I wish reviewers tested the CVT more. That's the one I'm considering. - Fake dual exhausts are awful. Thinking about vinyl wrapping the whole lower bar to cover both. - Considering Corolla Hatchback SE or Camry LE. Corolla 2-speed CVT and Camry AT 8 having roll out issues. Waiting until they get their respective transmission issues sorted.

Love your reviews man! I'd absolutely love a review on the Toyota Camry Hybrid LE. The thing gets 50 MPG and I'm wondering if it's fun to drive or not and how the base trim is since the other trims are a little too expensive for me.

Thanks for the awesome support! As soon as I get my hands on a Corolla Hybrid I will be bringing it to you!

@@RaitisRides Thank you so much! But please make it a Camry Hybrid LE trim ;) the Corolla hybrid is way too slow for me.

They need to make a hot hatch Corolla with like 250-350 hp and call it the Corolla 86

I was almost set on buying this one but when i found out how slow it was. Im hesitating now. 60 in 8.7 secs? My 2012 ford focus sedan can do that....

The manual is 7.5 which is very close to the Mazda 3. The CVT version is slower at 8.5. This is from MotorTrend
@mitchellmyrick58414 жыл бұрын
@@subvet3668 it ranges from 7 to 7.5, the cvt does slow it down a lot, the manual will easily chirp the tires all day

Sounds like lots of road noise. I notice the mic sound getting muffled.

Wow that thing is going to be hard to keep clean. Wish they'd go straight up "sport" instead of "sporty". Another 50 HP and this thing would be incredible.

I like the Corolla Hatch. I don't like the fake exhaust tips.

Wish the gearing was just a little shorter. It seems like the ratios for 4, 5 and 6 are all kind of overdrive. Probably done for fuel economy. Though to be fair I guess that getting to 60 in second gear is probably why this car with the manual gets a 7.5 second time.

I still would buy the Corolla hybrid sedan

It's a good hatch for young people or people just learning to drive a stick. Or if you want power you can use on the street it's all ya need unless you wanna race buy the velosta but Toyota looks better so get a 2.4 turbo with 320 horse and you'll have a winner Toyota
