I always wonder how people adopt healthier lifestyles. That was very informative and a great watch. My wife and I began struggling with infertility 3 years ago. We tried every procedure you could think of and nothing seemed to work for us. One day nine months ago my doctor asked what my lifestyle was like and I realized I was living a bit too "freely" if you know what I mean. It was then that I started to adopt a healthier lifestyle incorporating tons of fruit and veggies into my diet. I'm certainly not as healthy as you, but I cut out processed foods, fast food, constant consumptions of meat, etc.. I too bought a vitamix which helped mainly for my post-dinner sugar cravings. I'm happy to say that after just changing those few small things, we are expecting our first child in two weeks! Your videos and channel as well as others helped me through that transition in my life to come up with ideas for meals, self care and others. Thanks for all you do.

@@Downshiftology Lisa, can you talk about this more, please? Please talk about the challenges, and how you have overcome them. How do you continue to have the motivation and discipline to cook so much of your food from scratch? Do you ever grow weary of vegetables? I do think a Vitamix would help with that, to be honest, because you are right --- you could just DRINK your vegetables! :) I had to laugh when you said that, because I've thought the exact same thing. I would be the person who would get tired of chewing broccoli, KWIM? Or massaging kale. Eck. Then again, when I eat more vegetables and less bread, I always feel so much better. Years ago, I had Hashimoto's hypothyroiditis and it went into thyroid cancer. The nodules were all very small, but there were so many of them, in both lobes, we opted to take my thyroid out. I'm not sorry, but I will say, it's a bummer to have no thyroid. They tell you that the pill will make up for the loss, but they lie. ;) If you can at all keep your thyroid, or even a healthy part of it, do so. I've been 16 years with no thyroid. I'm still living and thankful for that, but I do sometimes think it's a constant battle to get a doctor to keep my hormone replacement at a functional level. The doctors seem to want me super low, which leads to terrible fatigue. If I say, "But I can't function," I'm told that they're trying to prevent a stroke or heart attack. I say, "Great. So you're trying to keep me living this miserably for another twenty years." You know what I'm talking about, I'm sure, because you've been through so much. It's amazing (and inspiring) that you were able to find a path to better health through food and lifestyle changes. For me, I just grow weary of chopping vegetables and making homemade food. I need it, but then with the fatigue.... Anyway, so thankful for your vlog. I love your aesthetic! Classy lady! :) Also, in video, it was lovely to see your mom. And you were one cute kid! Sunshine and smiles.

It’s so good to hear that someone else has problems with gluten-free packaged foods! I was so happy that there are so many gluten-free options for bread and crackers and cakes and brownies until I realized that they honestly made my symptoms just as bad. So sad. But homemade whole foods have changed everything and I feel great. Your videos are a huge help Lisa. Thanks so much.

The hardest part is that hearing “nothing is wrong with you”, when you need help. And small things gets bigger when they are not controlled. I am so happy to hear that you are healtier and happier. Thank you for sharing. I think Vitamix would help me really drinking my veggies, because the one blender that I have now leaves them almost whole. And I know it will be fast and easy. I experienced the same thing, went to several doctors, all of them acting like I'm confused. Deep down I knew I wasn't well. I had candida all along, causing anxiety and stress, unhealthy eating, high sugar intake.. Did my own research online , visited wellness shops. I immediately changed my diet completely, no sugar, no caffeine, no processed foods, it was hectic. But I survived that, was quite traumatic for my body, with the detox, my body was going this turmoil but the end result is amazing 👏. Healthy lifestyle is worth the try.

My experience with a functional medicine doctor has been really helpful. What I understand is that they have the traditional western medical training but they also practice integrated medicine which might include Chinese or eastern methods, and they prefer to use natural methods rather than just prescribing meds. They will prescribe if there is the need. So, it is just a more holistic approach to healthcare.

Thank you for sharing your story. It seemed like you were describing my life exactly. I too have celiac and it affected everything in my body with many unexplained health problems only to be told over and over again that all my tests were normal and everyone around me labeling me a hypochondriac. I knew something was wrong but I didn’t know what until I watched a PBS special with Dr. Mark Hyman talking about how wheat, gluten, and dairy was causing so many health problems for so many people. I changed my diet to whole, healthy food and started noticing that the dizzy spells, racing heart, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, moodiness, skin rashes, etc. were clearing up. I now follow a keto diet low in carbs, high in leafy green vegetables and salads, and moderate protein and I feel so much better. There is better information available now than when I was searching for answers in the early 2,000’s. You’re a great help for so many and I appreciate all your efforts. You have an excellent KZbin channel! 💚💚💚💚💚

So eye opening, I strongly believe as well that most issues people have are related to their diet. In my late 30s I thought I did not need to make any changes to my diet because I was not overweight and quite active but very soon I started developing high cholesterol, eczema and severe rashes. Fast forward it to now I have completely revitalized my diet and also while working with a naturopath discovered I am allergic to soy. Ah..all that Chinese food that I would share with colleagues a few times a week. Alas, I am on my wellness journey now and so much to learn. My tests came back negative for a year, when my mena symptoms first started. I suspect we intuitively know there's changes happening in our body long before if finally registers on a lab test. ;) As for changes I've made, gosh, I think I've tried everything under the sun - ha! And it's hard, because it's a rollercoaster of hormones and every woman is different. At the early stage (when estrogen tends to spike) my approach was very different from today (as my estrogen is plummeting). But I regularly post different things I'm trying on my Instagram stories. :)

I’m 54 and now about 2 years into the Pause I think. The Mena part was the worst for me (primarily due to the phase of extremely heavy and unpredictable flows) but I actually have had zero noticeable issues since the pause part. No hot flashes, no trouble sleeping. Possibly some mood issues but hard to say what is causing those with a lot of other factors. Weight gain definitely is more of a challenge but Covid also happened so I stopped going to gym and my Graves’ disease (hyperthyroid) has now flipped to hashimoto’s - just started a really low dose of synthroid. I have no idea if this helped but I use unsweetened soy milk on my morning oats and the Garden of Life women’s multi 40+ I take daily (I only take half the recommended dose on jar) has black cohosh in it.

Lisa, thank you so much for sharing. What’s sad for me right now is that I was doing really good in my 40’s and 50’s with my health but in the past two years, my health track has gone downhill. I’ve put on over 15 lbs., struggle in the hot weather and am prone to really bad headaches and ringing in my ears (tinnitus). I just turned 60 and am having a hard time pulling myself back into a healthy and active lifestyle. Your story is such an inspiration to me. Thank you!

Wow your story is practically my story with regards to symptoms. Although I tested negative for celiac, I know in my heart and soul that I'm very intolerant. I suffered with bronchitis every few months in my early 20s, I frequently suffered with thrush, went into peri menopause at approx 40 years old with everything that goes along with that night sweats, bloating, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, mysterious all over body pain, bruising and poor balance. Anxiety and depression followed. I could keep going but I'm sure you get the picture. I am 50 now and have just started feeling some bit normal again. I had lost myself for a very long time. I am currently getting my weight under control, eating clean and walking. I so wish I had found your channel earlier but better late than never. Thank you for sharing your story. I will be following with anticipation from Ireland 🇮🇪🍀 for each new video.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I discovered your channel earlier this year and it’s been a sort of nutrition and recipe bible for me. Whenever I have nutrition concern, Instead of searching google I search your channel. Let me explain. I started get really sick last fall (2020) id actually been sick for about 5 years but after being told multiple times nothing is wrong with me, like you had, I tried to live with it. But then it got really severe. After a long journey, I finally saw a specialist that was able to accurately diagnose me 4 months ago today. At that point I’d been struggling to breathe, couldn’t care for myself and had lost my voice for 5 weeks. So I was given a list of foods to avoid and sent on my way. It’s been a long road, and even though I’m better, I’m far from being ‘well’. My ongoing health and wellness journey has inspired me to study functional nutrition. And your channel has played an integral part in that. I’m super excited to say I’ve enrolled in a program that starts next month 🤩👏🏻 !! I know a vitamix would change my life right away in all the foods I could prepare. You’re channel has shown me that. I recently watched the episode, choosing the right vitamix. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to more videos and love your vlogs also.

I love your story and I LOVE that you figured out what the root cause to your symptoms were! And you even did it by yourself! I have a similar situation. Perhaps trickier! Im not celiac but rather gluten sensitive! Sounds sorta innocent right? My symptoms were not in my gut so I did not think down the road of a gluten problem. I found Dr. Peter Osborne on YT. He wrote the book, No Grain, No Pain. My life savor! By avoiding grains, im a different person! No more headaches, joint pain, red rashes face, hives, neck pain, fatigue! It’s hard to say goodbye to foods you love….UNTIL you realize you feel so good without them! For anyone trying to figure out your root cause to health issues, hang in there snd take the plunge to start eliminating the trigger foods -gluten and sugar and high inflammatory! I feel SO good when u don’t eat refined sugar. Thank you again for sharing your story! So encouraging to so many!

Thanks for sharing your story,I wonder how many others out there suffer needlessly because they don't truly know the causation mechanics of declining health. And the medical community is sadly and woefully out of the loop for preventing declining health conditions with the tools in their box is surgery, medication, and diagnostic testing, with exceptions to P.T.s and clinical psychology on a organic level for some conditions. This is what Docs whenever I bring up stories like yours, its just anecdotal unproven anomalies!!😡😞I appreciate your giftedness in communication in these matters you make it plain and thorough in details as you prep and give many variables in those basic food preparation tutorials. Thank you so much for posting this. When I was young, I was treated as though I was a hypochondriac. Because of not of being heard, I actually went into my mid-30s before finding out about my Celiac's situation, and that was only because I had a client who had very different symptoms from me, but said a few key things that connected to me. Unfortunately, the medical profession is not taught very much about Celiac disease. There are so many different symptoms and I was looking for a cure for kidney stones which no one could give me an explanation. Many blessings on your continued journey and thank you so much for all of your posting!

Happy for you that you finally got diagnosed. My Mom has Celiac and back just about 50 years ago it was relatively a non disease. She was just about dead before she was finally diagnosed. Available foods and information about it have come along way in 50 years but it's still hard to eat out in restaurants and sometimes even being invited to dinner parties. I adopted the healthy whole food eating habit because I grew up that way. I'm now in my 60's and the weight has started to pour on so am looking for solutions to that problem. I think I've determined that I just move less now so have started upping my game for in that regard but I'm always on the lookout for new recipies to try. Happy I came across your channel. Bless you in continued good health.🙏

Your wellness journey was similar to mine. I am 60 now but most of my life dealt with really low energy, brain fog, etc. Going gluten free seemed to help some, but it wasn’t the solution. A year or two ago an integrative doctor put me on a modified candida diet and what a game changer! After a lifetime of low energy, I now wake up most days rested and ready to go. Brain fog gone, etc. Years of infections and antibiotic use I believe left my gut microbes a mess. Now I start every morning with a green smoothie in my Vitamix to feed my gut. At 60 I’ve found renewed health and vitality through whole foods and good nutrition. I never want to go back to bad eating habits and the poor health that came with it.

What a fascinating story, Lisa. Mine is a little different, but we share a common thread: gluten. Several years ago I had fusion surgery to clear an exhausting, constant, lower back pain condition. Suddenly I was pain-free and could focus on the rest of my life. And I began noticing my heartburn, my nasal congestion, my headaches, my snoring and interrupted sleep. As I mulled over all those things I thought, “sounds like an allergic reaction, doesn’t it?” And although it definitely wasn’t Celiac disease, the idea of a gluten sensitivity kept crossing my mind. So I thought I’d cut out wheat from my diet. It was hard, emotionally and culturally, but it payed off. As for gluten-free substitutes, you’re right. Not worth it; the starches and other ingredients required to mimic a bread or pasta product may be worse, in the long run, than today’s wheat. Perhaps some day we’ll bring back the ancient grains that my mother used when she baked bread some fifty years ago, and I’ll be able to occasionally delight in a home baked slice of bread, but given the industrial nature of food production, I doubt it. Blessings to you, Lisa.

Me (33) watching this having every symptom you have. Literally every one. So many doctor appointments with zero answers, and even random answers, like being allergies to rabbits, that I've never been around. I attempted to go gluten free more than 10 years ago as a suggestion from my only Celiac friend, and felt better and things got better, but being a broke college student, I literally couldn't afford to eat the way I needed. And there wasn't gluten free aisles at stores in Virginia that their is now. I need to get back to trying to change my diet. Ty for sharing, and I love your channel 😊

Your story is similar to mine. I see so often doctors telling us we’re healthy when we are sick. They really need to change the way they care for people. I can’t even believe that most doctors don’t ask about your diet or lifestyle. The doctors told me I was fine but wanted to put me on so many medications, and I knew I wasn’t healthy and that meds weren’t the answer, so I put my health into my own hands and like you did research and adopted a healthy diet and the symptoms I had went away. I sometimes fall off and start eating processed foods and the symptoms come right back (bloating, hormonal issues, acne, anxiety, etc) and I’m always thankful in those moments that I know that what I eat truly affects how I feel and that helps me get back on track. Thanks for sharing your story!

I’ve still got a way to go, but the health & longevity benefits are everything. I’m learning that labels & ingredients are not to be taken for granted & that buying clean foods is worth it even though the total at the register can be a shock. I watched your Vitamix video from a while back & considered asking for a refurbished version as a gift. I can relate to several of the challenges you’ve had : I had an exhausting corporate career for almost 30 years (selling industrial food ingredients) which I quit to change my life. I followed a passion and opened a studio for Cosmetic and Paramedical tattoo -re-launching my business in a new location right as the Covid Pandemic hit. A newly leased space and no customers….wearing all the hats of a solo entrepreneur AND trying to make it through government shutdowns-talk about stress & exhaustion! And the ‘Mena’ phase of life? I’m right in the MIDDLE of it-hormones that are impossible to balance; Sleeping well is a thing of the past. My hat is off to you for taking all of your challenges and turning them into something that is helping so many others! For me, something had to give: simplifying my life has become a key focus with health & nutrition at the forefront. I’ve always been pretty good at getting regular exercise, but I needed to adopted some additional habits: daily meditation to curb anxiety & lower stress (I’m only up to 10 minutes a day), consistently healthier eating: I quit drinking coffee (now into adaptogenic tea), am really limiting gluten, but really need to get off SUGAR. That’s how I stumbled across Downshiftology and was immediately captured by your philosophy -and all the wonderful recipes, tips and ideas. Really want to build a diet more whole food based. But it’s got to be easy to implement ….and I’m hoping to find that here. I have dreamed of owning a Vitamix blender, but it’s pretty out of reach right now (spendy). It would certainly help me transform my diet and support my lifestyle goals!

Your story is so inspiring and makes me feel less alone! I’ve been following your recipes for a while now since I went gluten free and it’s been so helpful! I recently discovered I am celiac after spending a childhood often bedridden with migraines and then in my mid twenties I started developing so many other debilitating symptoms from kidney stones, anemia, psoriasis. It got so bad that my migraines would last for days and I would be in urgent care weekly. I spent May 2020 with a kidney stone blockage that turned to sepsis. January this year I tried the whole30 diet and found out I was celiac when my symptoms cleared up entirely! Since then I haven’t eaten any gluten and I no longer get migraines, my psoriasis went away and I feel so much more energised and nourished. During Whole30 is when I found your page and you’ve been a companion in the process. I never knew what I vitamix was until I watched your videos but it seems such a necessity in the kitchen. I want to try more of your recipes I can use the vitamix with but at the moment I can’t afford this luxury kitchen item! My relationship with food has changed so much and how much we can shift our entire physical and mental well being through a wholesome diet. Thanks for providing such delicious recipes and meal prep to follow!

All this to say, I have been needing help with getting easier to digest food and absorbing nutrients, which is difficult.
