It's because the show fleshes out even the most mundane form of evil that the Empire is capable of as a repressive government. Like, they show the type of evil that we know about from history and the news, both large and small. There are governments in real life who have done exactly the type of thing the Empire is being shown doing. It all builds up to making the Empire truly plausible as an entity, this making it particularly despicable to audiences.

"Never more than 12" SUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH a good line. first time i heard that it was a "ITS ON NOW!" moment. This show just builds and builds and builds so then just even 4 lines can just be more powerful than a blaster or a force moment. The character development that they create in this show is just on another level. They really make the Empire feel like the facist Empire that they were in A New Hope and the beauty of it is just how it is so subtle. From seeing how they destroy cultures like in the heist arch and how their justice system changed, and their torture methods, and killing the captor to make it look like an accident, just brilliant. And i think it hits so well because its the first Star Wars show where everyone is just a normal person. It allows you to really put yourself in the shoes of the characters so when someone gets hurt or dies you really feel the impact of that. The rest of this series is just on another level. I'm excited to see the rest of the reactions.

@@pauloportugal1396 I think the idea is that they need pacified and compliant labor for what they're building in these prisons. I would assume there are "worse" prisons, where the labor is less necessary, or less skilled that people are cycled too. The current system is cheaper, more efficient, and they don't need as many guards to enforce it. If the prisoners know, then it will take considerably more effort to ensure compliance and it would almost certainly slow down the work. Why would floors work as fast if they know they're never getting out? Better food and discipline is one incentive, but that doesn't stop entire floors from slowing down the work and trading who wins/loses each day.

The reason both Vel and Mon Mothma's stories seem convoluted is because they haven't completely committed themselves to how far the rebellion must go. Vel talks tough to Mon, but we see that she's not committed the way Cinta is committed (or it took the incidents of the heist to make her begin to understand the extent of true commitment). Mon and Vel are being forced farther than they intended, and it's only now becoming clear to them. Mon Mothma is insanely wealthy, and to this point giving her money hasn't meant serious commitment to her. I don't think the original prison scheme was to just move prisoners from one prison to another. I think that's an exigent measure forced by the PORD. They extended everyone's sentence, but notice that none of the prisoners around Cassian realizes that...the number on their "tab" display doesn't reveal the PORD extension. So the first time they actually tried shuffling a prisoner instead of releasing him, it screwed up. The prison system can't handle the PORD requirements.

Mon Mothma at this point is simply trying not to get caught by the Empire. She withdrew a huge amount of credits from her personal accounts to finance Rebel activity just before the Empire announced it would begin auditing Imperial bank accounts, and if money was withdrawn without "receipts" as to where it was spent, the Empire will simply assume you are supporting the Rebel Alliance. So far she has been able to cover for the missing money by juggling amounts in charity accounts she controls and also by making it seem like her husband has a gambling addiction, but she needs to replace the large amount in her own accounts very soon or she will be arrested for treason. So she is looking for connection in the financial world to "loan" her the money she needs just to appear like nothing has been removed from her own accounts.
