I see a couple people here that agree with Holden about being hesitant about Azula, which I find surprising since I immediately thought she was a fit. All it took was the scene where they zoom in on her face as she watches all those people burn. You can see it in her eyes and the slight way she smiles. The crazy is in there. Personally, I thought the actress did a phenomenal job there. But I've only watched till episode 3 myself, perhaps I'll be proved wrong as the series progresses. (Also I found it very impressive how they managed to meld 3 different plot points into one episode fairly seamlessly. Jets' introduction was incredibly smooth, and though I could nitpick a few things, overall the whole episode made sense and worked well.)

How are you guys feeling about the pace of the show? Some plots have been merged to speed things along which hurts the teams growth. Jet and his freedom fighters tried to blow up a dam not the king. This created tension within team Avatar. Also the mechanist Si, we meet him later on in the northern air temple not Omashu. I hope that speeding things up does not hurt the show or character development.

I honestly thought that for condensing a show while still hitting important notes/characters this episode did a great job of mashing up several different episodes of the cartoon and still having the end result be what it needed to be.

Can't wait to see your reactions at the end of the season, the longer the show went on the more I enjoyed it, it felt like the performances improved over the course of the show as well. Also some incredible supporting performances from actors I've only seen in a handful of things before, I won't spoil them though in case anyone is coming to this show fresh.

At first it bothered the hell out of me that I recognized the actor who plays Tao's father and couldn't place him. But a few days after binging this whole season I once again saw a clip of that end scene from community where Trey and Ahbed do their Spanish "Library" freestyle. I feel like that's him. Ahbed is Tao's father, I believe. If it's not him, it looks so much like him.

I have to believe that even the most critical of fans watching this show can't come down too hard on the visuals of the World itself. The Air Temples, the Kiyoshi Warriors, the Fire Nation, Omashu, etc. All are visually well represented in my opinion. I honestly can't wait to see Ba Sing Se. And honestly I hope to God they come strong and give Earth Rumble a great episode. Toph's intro in book 2 was awesome and she deserves no less than an Epic intro episode in this show. Maybe even casting The Rock as The Boulder. lol. If they could score that....they may just win some people over. I can't think of any reason not to, other than he's like 15-20 years older than the character. And knowing Dwayne, he might ask for too muc money and then try to assert some creative control over the rest of the show. lol.

In general I think this series was a very good adaptation. I find it a little juvenile that people want a frame for frame translation from animation to live action. Particularly when the animation had the freedom to visit endless locations and - as a Nickelodeon property - take an ENTIRE episode to devote to "messages" like: "Don't steal". These ideas being condensed into a single episode and "sharing" prominent locations made a lot of sense to me. As long as the central story was there. And I feel it is.

My issue is that a lot of character growth and development are completely stripped out of the picture due to them overlapping multiple plots. It's very apparent by the last episode.

But considering the budget of the Netflix series, I still make the case that I'd rather get the number of episodes at the quality that we got them; than sacrifice CGI (which is prohibitively expensive) or the entire show altogether....JUST so that we could've had an entire episode dedicated to Jet and the outriders or the waterbending scroll. What specific element of character do you think was 100% absent from the show, that made it so unacceptable for them to merge non-primary plot points into one? And more importantly, how would you have fixed it, without sacrificing overall quality of the show?

@alexmontrose8004 Them actually bonding, fighting together, training together, and learning how to trust each other. For most of the pivotal moments, they're not even all together as a group. By the time it happens, it's the last episode. Their relationship is one of the weakest aspects of the show imo. Remember how Toph and Katara clash initially because Katara is considered to be overly motherly of the group? Netflix Katara is not that person, which is wild because that's such a huge part of who she is. The flip side is that I would argue that if this was an ATLA show from the perspective of Zuko, it would be incredible. Iroh is a lil stiff but I completely buy their relationship because we see them doing everything we don't see team Avatar doing lol. (The acting is also better so it helps sell it more) It's also weird to me for them to be limited to 8 episodes and yet start pulling episodes from season 2 and 3.

For my wife and I The animated show is our favorite and is considered a masterpiece by many. Glad you guys are enjoying it but definitely prepare yourselves The exposition gets insane It's only up from here in terms of how poorly it's written and different stories put together :( also my wife and I know the actress for katara is new actress but there are others holding their own and zuko and aang are amazing. I feel like they wanted to tone down katara and in doing so she's completely expressionless every scene I see her in lol. Definitely does not compare to the original series to my wife and I at all in any way whatsoever.

Yeah so we've hit my biggest issue with this show so far. Azula. I get that it's alot to put on a child actor's shoulders but yeeeahhhh... the casting director really missed the mark, in my opinion. Very cringey and disappointing. She is one of the most important characters on the show. I'd argue she's more of a main antagonist than Ozai given how much screentime she gets during the show, so getting her casting right is hugely important to the tone of the series. And I gotta say, they swung, they missed. And on top of that, Mai just visually looks all wrong. The tall, pale, skinny, emo-ish girl that literally looks like you should avoid approaching, has this very friendly, pretty, bubbly face. And I don't want anyone to think I'm being too harsh, because both actresses are beautiful and most likely talented, I just don't think these roles fit them at all. And I'm loving the show so far, the casting for literally everyone else so far is top notch. That's why these 2 castings just perplex the hell out of me. Makes no sense (Who's to say?😉). Anyway, still loving the show, already looking forward to season 2, just had the air out that Azula laundry and get it off my chest. Great reaction as always Holden n Jen! Enjoying going through this series with you!

So I don't think the child actor argument exists here, she was just miscast and her character was hot headed, irate and emotional instead of being cool and collected like in the show

They race swapped the Earth benders slightly but I dont mind personally. Dani Pudi(Abed) is a good casting as the Mechanist. Also to be fair Earth nation does have a South Asian vibe so I think its perfectly fine to have our neighbouring brethern from (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives, Iran). It works here unlike what M.Night did.

Yeah I wouldn’t even call it race swapping, the earth kingdom is supposed to MASSIVE. It’s clear through the greater avatar lore that the region is supposed to encompass China and all of South Asia at a minimum, Possibly even the Middle East. It’s clear even in the animation the earth kingdom has huge diversity ethnically. We see dark skinned king bumi which means earth in Sanskrit and we see king kuei in ba sing se which is Chinese in origin. Truly amazing how many Asian cultures they pulled from in the animated series and to which depth they went.

It’s hard to form any opinion on them since we didn’t see anything from them. If you pay attention Ty Lee and Mai literally stand still the entire season. Not a single step. A big part of their characters are their fight scenes so if they can make that work then they should be fine. Azula is fine. Mai is the one I’m most worried about.
