One of the things I love about this trilogy is that each movie has valuable lessons for everyone of all ages as well as you get to watch the characters grow up and mature with the audience, which is rare in animation. The second film came out when I was finishing middle school and the third came out when I was finshing high-school, getting to grow up with these characters probably made the ending of the triology way more sad and I hope you both enjoy the last movie of the triology!!!

Fun fact: Guilhermo del Toro, who acted as a creative consultant and producer of a bunch of DreamWorks movies around this time, was the one who convinced the makers to go ahead and have Stoick die the way he did... The makers were reluctant to go that far, but del Toro argued that not only could kids handle it, but it was important for the story, for Hiccup's character development and the younger audience that death is a part of life and it's not an easy thing.
@flatstheflounder288410 ай бұрын
Honestly, that was a fantastic decision on his part. As heart wrenching of a scene as that was, it was necessary for Hiccup's continued growth as a character. I saw somewhere that it was actually Gobber who was going to be killed at first, and then del Toro convinced them that it should instead be Stoick
@jonathank788010 ай бұрын

I think now I understand why Hiccup's mother stayed away. She probably stayed away because she couldn't kill a dragon, if something happened to Hiccup all because she couldn't kill a dragon she'd never forgive herself. I do think she should have came back because every kid needs a mothers love, Hiccup wouldn't have felt alone in what he believed in
@SubzeroBlack6810 ай бұрын
I think the idea was that she chose the dragons over the humans. She wanted to protect them and help them. But if she returned to the village and interacted with her Viking home, her husband wouldn't have understood living in cohabitation with them and would still want to kill the dragons. It would eventually lead to a war of Vikings vs Dragons and Hiccup would have been caught in the middle of a war.
@halfbee78868 ай бұрын
Good point, and it reminds me of that scene in the first movie where Hiccup was also really close to abandoning his village all because he didn’t want to kill a dragon. He didn’t leave the village eventually because he was found out by Astrid, and he discovered a more pressing matter at that time, which was the threat of the alpha dragon that was controlling all the dragons to attack his village. Hiccup does take after his mother.

Most people miss the great live story of Hiccup and Astrid. Their dynamic is crucial to the development of the story. She takes the shit out of him, but sees something no one else does. She supports him and knows how to lovingly get his mind on the track to solve the issues at hand. She is a strong woman and knows her strengths and weaknesses. There are videos by psychologist and marriage councilors about how great their dynamic is.

For Race to the Edge fans, remember in Triple Cross when Viggo said to Hiccup "Hiccup, you have many admirable qualities, but ruthlessness is not one of them. You are too good, too pure, too innocent, which will get you or someone you love killed.". Fast forward to movie two, and Hiccup's lack of ruthlessness, - wanting to change Drago's mind when both his mother and father told him it wasn't possible (not to mention that he committed MASS REGICIDE.) - got his father killed. If he had just killed Drago, Stoick would still be alive. Foreshadowing? I think yes.

As often as I've seen reactions of this trilogy I noticed something similar from the first movie. Hiccup and Toothless have the same injuries and now Drago lost his left arm and the alpha lost it's left tusk. I don't think Toothless initially knew he killed Stoick. It was the first time Hiccup has ever been mad at him and he didn't know how to process that. Best character upgrade ever for Toothless! The blue color addition was outstanding!

Rewatched this one again just now in prep for your video..... this is such a great movie... what a joy to watch! :) Loved this movie... love the bad guy, he was very well done. His voice was Ronan's guard guy from Guardians of the Galaxy, Djimon Honsou.... he's a great voice actor. :) My only nitpick is at the end when Toothless stood up to the Alpha. At that point, the Alpha hadn't lost his ability to mind-control other dragons, so I don't know why he couldn't gain control again? Were Toothless's attacks THAT powerful that the Alpha couldn't regain control again? I felt like he had an opportunity between attacks to try to regain control, but it looked like he didn't even try to regain it at all.... I just don't know why he didn't attempt to try again...? But literally that's my ONLY nitpick.... the rest of the movie was soooo on-point and awesome. Really really great movie :)

The story has a heart to it. A lot of animation loses it's bearings. They fall flat. This series just has heart to it. Beyond all of the acting, design, filmmaking, (which are great)... the story has heart to it. And Hiccup in the book series is nowhere near as cute & handsome as he is in the movies. He's kind of a wimpy little nerd who never really fits into any of the armor or helmets they try to put on him. He's nearly a different version of the character entirely. But you feel for him,... there is a heart there. Toothless is different too. I think he was meant to be that tiny dragon they give the fish to in the first one. He was a tiny lame little thing. They must have thought it was less believable that he would be that small.

If you want more dragon films to watch, I will highly recommend "Reign of Fire" It's a film from 2002 about a post-apocalyptic world where dragons were discovered and wiped out a large portion of humanity. It has big names such as Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale and the main reason I'm recommending this is because of the special effects and cinematography of the dragons in this film. Not only are the dragons shot in a way that they feel massive and terrifying, but the CGI was revolutionary for its time with about 80% of the cgi still holding up to today's standards. Hope you guys give it a watch one day and keep on grinding!
