I think they spelled it out well with the Jamis scenes. Paul is seeing visions of this man, teaching him Fremen culture, showing him the ways of the desert life, and imparting sage wisdom on him, someone who was certainly going to be his mentor, and lifelong friend. Then when he finally meets him, he ends up killing him. There’s a couple other examples, like Paul seeing Duncan amongst the Fremen, even though he had already died, the significance of the cryssknife always changing. One moment it’s being gifted to him, another time, he’s being stabbed with it. But I do agree that the movie could’ve improved on this aspect a bit. It does improve in the next movie where you see some of the events & imagery he foresaw in the first movie, play out much differently

"then whats the point of these shields?" Ive seen this sentiment before. Its basically: "whats the use for a shield if everyone uses countermeasures to bypass it?" Ask yourself this: whats the point of slanted steel armor on tanks if an anti-tank round can easily penetrate it? Because it means the enemy is required to bring more advanced and expensive munition and weaponry to do so. You wouldnt go into battle without a bulletproof vest right? Despite the fact that there are plenty of handheld weaponry that can easily penetrate any modern bullet proof vest.

It's just a matter of seeing an arms race in action. Shields have been so effective and in use for so long, that pretty much everyone now knows how to find their flaws and bypass the protection they give. Because of shields, bullets were abandoned and a fighting style was developed specifically to use slow movements very precisely to cut through them. In nature, with plants and all types of insects, this arms race can evolve very fast and adaptations are made continuously to outdo the other.

Exactly. The shield makes artillery and high-speed projectiles outdated, which in turn forces armies to train their soldiers better, and that essentially turns infantry warfare undesirable because while it's expensive to produce ammunition and equipment, it takes time to train good soldiers; we see that one Atreides soldier is worth a dozen Harkonnens, and one Sardaukar is worth a dozen Atreides (more or less). If you lose your manpower, you can't instantly replace it like you would a weapon. So you gotta think twice before putting your men out there.

29:35 They filmed most of it on Arrakis itself. It saved a lot of special effects. Also they were able to hire a lot of fremen as extras which was very cheap as they paid them with a few water bottles. The expensive part of the movie budget was hiring the spacing guild to get them out there.

I'm happy you both are enjoying the music. Hans Zimmer wanted to score this film, which meant leaving Christopher Nolan for scoring Tenet and Oppenheimer. But this is what eventually got him his second Oscar win. Heard he's already working on the score for part three, Dune: Messiah.

One of my favorite things about Dune is how Herbert subverted the "visions of the future" trope. You both commented on Paul's visions of Jamis. Paul had visions of Jamis being a friend and being killed by him. The actual future was a third path where he kills Jamis instead. But Paul retains the memories of friend Jamis and can learn from them even though he and Jamis were never friends. That is such an interesting take on being able to see the future.

The shields are interesting. They aren’t impervious, they basically block high speed kinetic velocity. You see the missiles slow down and squirm through the shields. The weapons the Harkonens use for the attack are old world artillery and las guns. Using the lasers around shielded objects are super sketchy. If a laser connects with a shield it creates a nuclear explosion on both ends. Also nothing is “technically” super natural. The Bene Gesserit train to have full control over every cell in their body. The Voice isn’t a power, it’s about manipulating your voice and word selection in such a way that it will perfectly hijack your targets will. The voice doesn’t always sound scary, but it sounds scary when used on Harkonens because that is the tone they best respond to.

Things get more super natural as time goes on, but it all feels very grounded and explained in the world building.

@@bradencarson1572 yeah the movies really don’t expand on the rules of tech or power too often. In a way I kind of like this because it minimizes exposition and seems more natural. However I also totally get that people who haven’t read the books might get a little lost with questions about the details. That being said, the universe and story adheres very well to its own rules, even if attention isn’t being called directly to it. Personally, I love these two movies. As a book fan, I am beyond pleased. I find the movies work best if you have the background knowledge from the books to fill in some of the gaps.

A lot of details from the books are just straight up not explained, but I love that. I love not being treated like a child and having a character come on screen and deliver 4 minutes of exposition like “Here is what is about to happen, because I am speaking about it now, so it will happen soon” Characters are assumed to actually be characters in the world who wouldn’t need all those little details explained to them, so while it leaves questions for the audience I personally enjoy it to having someone come on screen and basically explain “This is the next plot point”

I would definitely try to watch part 2 as soon as you're able. There's a lot going on and its better to just watch it back to back as you'll retain the most information. Part 2 was not filmed at the same time as they needed to wait and see how this did before a Part 2 was greenlit. Glad you guys liked it!

Crazily, WB waited to see how this film did before greenlighting the second… but the level of cinematography / effects is just as good! You mentioned about them doing something different with the VFX - they actually didn’t use blue or greenscreen, but used a sandy coloured one so that light reflections / edge wraps affected by them matched the tone of the desert setting, rather than it being such a contrasting colour. I believe that this meant they had to do more rotoscoping because it being harder to always pull a good key, but it made the final compositing a lot more convincing.

Even crazier is they held the same approach for Part 3 as far as I know. With the trajectory they're on they should be safe to keep making them after 3 but as I understand the source material gets.... weird?

@@intense79nickeven the first book has “weird” aspects that were left out. We didn’t get any spice orgies sooooo. Yeah the whole universe was a huge inspiration to so many sci if books and universes because of this. Lots of crazy places to pull ideas and build them into something else or get new thoughts from really diving into this really different universe Edit. I could see the third one "Children of Dune" working just as well on screen, but it would easily require 2 additional movies, which is why I think many are ruling it out because it all depends on what Denis Villeneuve is willing to do. So far, it seems he's only expressed interest in the 3 movies.

That's a pretty universal thing. I saw that change in my brother in law, when they had their kids. :) Sadly, I can't have kids... but... instead I get stupidly emotional over our guinea pigs or my nephew and niece (wonderful kids, despite not really being kids anymore). :D

I'd say it can hit hard from either perspective. There's a lot of parents out there who unfairly lay their expectations onto their kids, which can be quite suffocating. It's always wonderful seeing a parent like Duke Leto who can accept someone as they come. Too often, parents think of their kids as an extension of themselves rather than seeing an individual with their own values and dreams.

Part 2 was not filmed in tandem with Part 1. The director only got the go ahead for Part 2 just before Part 1 was released - there was no guarantee of Part 2 when this project started.

For the vision of Paul dying, it is theorized that Paul the Atreides when he killed the fremen "died" and the person who rose from that fight was Paul the Fremen. So Paul did die, but it was his past self and now he needs to look to his future self. I think it makes sense I dont know about others.

It caught me too and feels more powerful since I originally watched the film as I'm a step-father to a sweet little girl. Basically in a nutshell, as long there is spice getting harvested from the dunes of Arrakis; the planet cannot be fertile or fit for sustaining water bodies. And that is why the emperor wants the planet to be a barren land to fulfill his needs of spice, which mostly is interstellar travel. So, the messiah character of Paul will become an entity powerful enough to breach the fabric of space and time so that there is no need to harvest spice anymore yet the civilizations around the universe can carry on with interstellar travel with Paul's power or somehow he's going to help them with it. This is the basic synopsis of what I grasped from the movie. (never read the book or saw the original one) Also I loved the way the BeneGezarette woman/people are creating a steaming hot pile of foreshadowing (*in Deadpool voice*) around the forthcoming of Paul's character. It's pretty engaging.

From what I gathered from the books, the Bene Gesserit have a sort of ancestral memory, where they can draw on the strength of will and knowledge of all their female ancestors. However, their male ancestors are all blocked off. Their pursuit of the Kwisatz Haderach is an attempt at creating a male Bene Gesserit, who has access not only to his female ancestors, but the males as well. They believe that, given the right training and preparation, the Kwisatz Haderach would have all the powers of a full Bene Gesserit, Mentat (sort of human supercomputers), and Guild Navigator (able to guide ships through "hyperspace" with the spice) all in one. The Bene Gesserit are able to control their bodies to a superhuman degree, including consciously influencing the gender of their children, and they instituted a 10,000 year breeding program. However, Jessica gave birth to a son, Paul, out of genuine love for Duke Leto, and thus the power of the Kwisatz Haderach appeared one generation too early. The full abilities appeared imperfectly in Paul, but they were still more than enough for him to easily overthrow House Corrino, who had ruled the Empire for 10,000 years. Paul taught Bene Gesserit fighting to the Fremen, turning them into unparalleled warriors, and used those armies to conquer worlds that resisted. However, because the Kwisatz Haderach appeared one generation early, Paul's prescience was imperfect. He could see enough of the future to know that a catastrophe was coming that would end the human race, but he wasn't skilled enough to see the path that would avoid it. It wouldn't be until Paul and Chani's son was born that the true power of the Kwisatz Haderach would be realized, and that path could be seen and taken.

The new thing you may have heard about for the CG is that they didn't use green/blue screens, insead a tan screen for the backgrounds where they had practical effects where they knew they were also doing CG effect as well. Reduces the bounce light that shows green on other things in the scene

25:46 They don't dig into the sand. They use the sand compactor that Duncan Idaho showed earlier but did not explain. It is a tool that uses static electricity to move sand. In the film, it looks like it is making a tunnel. I presume that a sand compactor is used to make the hole, then a stiltent (a tent version of a stillsuit) is placed in the hole, then inflated. Its not stated explicitly, but I assume the static electricity does not summon a worm.

22:25 fun fact about the lasers they use. If that laser hits a shield, it causes a massive explosion at the point where it hits and also where the lasgun is due to feedback, so they have to be pretty careful.

The 2000 Mini-Series DUNE, did a lot of World Building. I focused on Jen when the "Only need you to be my son" came up. You didn't disappoint. It was filmed in Syria.

Oh nice! I've been hoping to get you guys' thoughts about these movies, especially yours as a filmmaker and cinema buff Holden, don't be afraid to be critical of popular movies and shows, we're all here because we enjoy watching you guys experience these things and share your honest thoughts! The David Lynch version of the film is still very much worth a look if you like sci-fi, it goes into a lot of the weirder elements of the book Denis (wisely) left out of this adaptation, but also changed a number of things, making Denis' version somehow more accurate to the books while containing less of what is in the books. Also a fun cameo from Lynch himself if you're paying attention. The 1984 movie covers pretty much exactly the same story as Dune Part 1 and 2 combined, so once you've seen those you don't need to worry about spoilers and such.

I had never heard of the Dune franchise, until my best friend’s dad got me into the franchise. He told me about it before the first one came out, and I have been hooked on the series since. I just finished the 4th book. Love this series so much.

To give a short explanation of Paul's visions, he processes so much information from the world around him that he can "calculate" possible outcomes. Paul has an incredible ability to have these "visions" where he basically sees futures that could happen, should the events line up correctly. Like with his visions of Chani and Jamis. Throughout the film the visions change and can be influenced by even minute details such as a hesitation in a single moment.

My husband absolutely loves Dune. The books and films. He got me to watch the 1st part and i cant lie i was bored. But i still went to see the 2nd one and i loved it. Dont know why lol just my take.

Paul’s visions about Jamis are a prime example that his visions aren’t always 100% accurate. Jamis DOES in a way teach Paul how to become Freman. It just happened to play out a different way in that Paul had to kill Jamis to be accepted into the group.

All of the world building in part 1 makes part 2 that much better. Part 2 gets to focus on the story and characters so much. It really is one of my all time favorites already.

To clarify for Jen (and Holden too, I guess 😜), there is no "original" version on film. Neither the miniseries done by SciFi nor this film are trying to remake the previous film. All are separate attempts at adapting the novel.

One of the things that was used to enhance the CG of the movie was to use an "amber" screen rather than a green screen to film in front of. The music was done by Hans Zimmer.

This movie is a perfect example of show don't tell. A lot of the world-building and story can be gleamed from just looking at the set design, the musical leitmotifs, the way actors convey something, that usually would've been conveyed with expository dialogue typical sci-fi blockbuster, is instead conveyed through a glare, an eye movement, or body language. There certainly still has to be some exposition since it is a completely new world. It certainly gets better with repeat watches and also after you watch the 2nd movie. The movie also glosses over some of the concepts from the book for the sake of simplicity so if you want a more detailed explanation, you would have to either watch the movie again, watch some explainer videos or read the first book.

Shields deflect anything moving fast, so they would stop bullets or lasers which is why you need swords in combat. The projectiles that penetrate shields are effectively drones.

The cinematography in part two is even better. It doesn't always get mentioned but the dialogue is also very good. It is pretty sparse but every line is very true to the characters and their situation yet still reveals a lot of world building and character relationship.

Like Paul’s dreams in Dune, the jedi in star wars also had these. More notably, in Empire strikes back, Luke gets a force vision of himself defeating vader and the mask opens up to show is own face, warning him of his fate should he proceed down a dark path. We eventually see him at the climax of return of the jedi, Luke embraces the light; and his premonition never comes true. In revenge of the sith, anakin is (unnaturally) shown one potential future where Padme dies in childbirth; and his paranoia led him to the dark side, in which a chain of events ultimately led to the nightmares he tried so hard to avoid. Like the supernatural dreams in Dune, the force visions only show one of many possible outcomes.

Regarding the more supernatural aspects: Dune is set thousands of years in the future. In that time, thinking machines (computers and AI) have been banned. This has led humanity to develop superhuman abilities, through training and genetic crossbreeding. The Bene Gesserit are able to use The Voice, which consists of tuning the voice to a certain pitch that basically hypnotizes the listener. Mentats (like Thufir Hawat) are human computers, capable of performing incredibly complex calculations and solving logical problems. As for the navigators of the Space Guild, they use the Spice (which in large quantities allows them to see possible futures, as Paul does) to search for possible paths through space (basically looking into the future to see which paths are safe)
