I think the ending was more about the other friends now not having any ties to Miles. They no longer had anything to gain from him. So it’s not that they were like “yeah, let’s go with Helen cause she’s right” but more like “we’ll his name is ruined, I have nothing to gain from him anymore.” So, in the end, they were all still terrible people.

I agree, but I think it was more than just that they didn’t have anything to gain from him… as he goes down for the loss of the Mona Lisa and is bankrupted, staying tied to him hurts them (in the press), and declaiming him and helping his downfall go even further twists any negative attention away from them and back to him. On a separate note, my only criticism of the ending is that no matter how much Miles deserved all of that and Helen deserved justice for her sister, destroying the Mona Lisa was still an evil act.

I agree for the most part except it wasn't just his name. At the beginning they said if this fuel doesn't work it's going to destroy the company. Further, he is probably going to be bankrupted by the destruction of the Mona Lisa. That was on loan from Paris, he did not own the painting. With it's destruction, he is probably going to lose everything. It wasn't just his name, he literally had no wealth or power over the others and they could finally turn on him without fear.

Initially I felt similar to you, Holden, that the ending was a little disappointing. However, upon further reflection, I realized how well written and designed that ending actually was. If you recall Miles discussion of what it meant to be a disrupter, he spoke of how they first broke the small things and then took it too far and broke the system that no one wanted broken. In this movie, the only real disrupter was Helen. The ending was an enactment of this very concept. She first begins by breaking small things. She eventually even gets the support of the others as she breaks all the sculptures. And then there comes a point where they feel like she's taken it too far. And when she blows up the Glass Onion and burns the Mona Lisa, the system that is Miles' money and influence is forever broken. Miles, who had invested everything into Klear, was destroyed. The rest of them turn on him because Miles couldn't do anything for them anymore, and they never really liked him in the first place. And Helen's nature as a disrupter was telegraphed from the beginning when she broke the box with a hammer instead of playing Miles' games. That's just a well written script!

also the reason the Mona Lisa burning will be tied to Miles is bc he explained the thick of the cost of borrowing it was the protective barrier that would come up at the ding of a notification alert. Miles went against those orders & installed an override button that was never supposed to be there (bc, as we know, billionaires think their invincible). The shield did its job protecting the painting until his override button was used, no matter who pushed it bc it wasn’t supposed to be there. Also it was Klear that added (pun intended) fuel to the fire lol.

Masterclass of woke cringe, and a great display of how Hollywood clowns see the world. So simplistic, so naively elementary, there's nothing clever at all about it. One of the best things in this film, is that it shows stuff as it happens, like Miles handing Duke the drink, taking his gun and putting it behind his back, putting the gun in the ice bucket, you can see the phone in Miles back pocket, you hear Blanc saying Helen instead of Andi. That's one of the reasons I really like this film, unlike other films that don't show any stuff until the detective tells the story with all the details. But the best part for me is that, as an audience member, you're wondering when the murder mystery is gonna start, but after the flashback you realize that Benoit and Helen have been in the murder mystery the entire time. So freaking amazing. One of the best films I watched in 2022.

@4yinyang
@4yinyang Жыл бұрын
@@spacemonkeyentertainment6413 I am a little confused what you mean by "don't show Helen when she clearly was there." I would have to assume you are referring to when Helen and Blanc spied on Duke? The explanation then is that she was there before the branch broke, making Duke look back. It was in fact Helen breaking the branch when she left, hence why she wasn't there when we see the first reveal that Blanc was watching him. In the flashback we see the reveal that both Blanc and Helen is watching Duke because it takes place right before the branch breaking and the original reveal.

I love how you can hear Benoit call her Helen when they meet after Duke's death, but NO reactor ever realized it. Overall, the Foreshadowing is amazing. That the woman destroying the box with a hammer isn't Andi was expertly hidden by Helen being wrapped in towels, so you don't realize the hair and clothing is so different to Andi's. Another great foreshadowing moment is a monologue by Miles: he says something along the lines of "you start destroying something and you destroy more and more even though everyone tells you to stop, and the things you destroy get way too expansive until you destroy something, that no one wants you to destroy". The last thing of course being the Mona Lisa

It really requires extremely forced actions to try to find anything supposedly 'clever' about this dumpster fire of a moronic movie. Any trickery using twins before the twin's existence is revealed is incredibly cheap writing, and goes against all the rules and etiquette of writing a murder mystery. And destroying the Mona Lisa was the most monumentally stupid thing in the whole movie. It ties into nothing, it changes nothing meaningful (except giving Helen a looong prison sentence and a debt she'll never be able to pay back), and is one of the most unintelligent plot points in any movie ever.

I think holden isn’t considering that regardless of the technical cause of the mona lisa burning, they don’t want to be associated *at all* with someone who had the mona lisa in their possession when it burned. Their turn was entirely believable because it’s been established throughout the whole film they don’t care about miles at all. It was more pragmatic to lie about the napkin before as Helen had no leverage at all. But the general optics of associating with some who privately rented the mona lisa and was the indirect cause of it burning is too much for them to stay on the boat with him.
@dansmart3182

Plus he installed the override that got the Mona Lisa Burned, it would be blamed on Miles. That Alone would do the one thing the shitheads need to turn on him. It removed miles from power. It's funny how even though Glass Onion has an ostensibly happy ending, there's still an undercurrent of cynicism to it, since the other disruptors only turned on Miles once it became clear it would be career suicide to continue hanging out with him. Even when they're ostensibly doing the "right" thing, the rest of them are still doing it for largely selfish reasons (or at least that's how I interpreted the ending)

My immediate thought when Helen sat up after being shot was "did she pull a Theodore Roosevelt?" and then she pulled the diary out of her pocket with a bullet embedded in it and I went "dang, they really had her pull a Theodore Roosevelt. That's Awesome." (For those who are unaware, while on the way to one of his presidential campaign speeches, Theodore Roosevelt was addressing a crowd and someone shot him at point-blank. However, TR had his 50-page speech (and his eyeglasses case) in his coat pocket, which slowed the bullet down enough so that, although it still entered his chest, it didn't pass his ribs. He assessed his own injury, determined he wasn't in immediate danger, and went the rest of the way to the hall and delivered an eighty-minute speech with a bullet lodged between two of his ribs) (The comparison I'm drawing is how a concealed bundle of paper saved someone from a gunshot (obviously, Helen made it off a bit easier since the bullet had to go through a thick pane of glass first, but still))

@@christianwise637 It does happen in real life, but it's a matter of "if you roll the dice enough, you'll get it at some point." The chances are incredibly, INCREDIBLY slim, but it can (and sometimes does) happen, and, when it happened to TR, it basically just made him even more of a badass. Also, this was probably the most realistic instance of a bullet getting stopped in a movie because, as I mentioned, it went through glass that looked pretty thick, which would definitely lower its velocity enough for a small book to stop it

The ending was earned. Helen made it happen. If she did nothing then Miles would’ve gotten away with his dumb plan. Her being an actual disruptor and not a fake like the rest of them lead to his demise (his work, his home, his dream), and with his demise the others continued to be selfish and chose to not be associated with him anymore. They did the right thing in the end, but that didn’t make them any more “good” that’s why Helen left them and went to Blanc, the true catalyst for the outcome, and they shared their moment of victory.

That's not him tooting his own horn, he normally doesn't show a lot of ego, and at least the music part of the box would be too far removed from his area of expertise to be trivial. But he didn't see the puzzles. He got the smashed box and saw some random puzzle parts strewn around. So he pulled that comment completely from his behind ^^

Ok. So, she started by breaking the glass icons of his largesse. And they cheered. Then she increased the damage until she was breaking a system no one wanted broken. But once it was, they were glad for it. Helen was the only real Disruptor there. She fit Miles’ description to a T and they subconsciously followed as is their nature.

I whole heartedly agree with it being just pure fun. It’s almost as if recently a good movie has to have some incredible message that needs to resonate with audiences or have some big heart wrenching ending. Why can’t movies just be fun for the sake of being fun

Besides the Derol and Dong cameos, another fun piece of info is that by law remakes of art like Mona Lisa for films have to be destroyed with proof. They did it on camera, two birds one stone.

You might notice in a rewatch that Blanc calls the person we believe to be Andi by the name Helen at the stairs just before she is shot, and before the reveal she is actually Helen.

The ending with her braking everything is just a realisation of Miles' own talk about braking things. Note how her "friends" tried to stop her when she went "too far", bringing down the system, represented here by Liberace's piano and the Mona Lisa. Once that "system" was broken, they were free. Hence their behaviour at the end.

This movie was awesome. The second viewing is rather rewarding, as you see the nuggets being thrown throughout. Definitely better than the first one. Stronger thematic center, better production values. The "friends" didn't really changed at the end. They still were awful people. They only "sided" with Helen because Miles was a liability. I also like the fact that Blanc was in the background for the final act. He was responsible for the mansion falling down, but through Helen.

Edward Norton is considered difficult to work with because of his perfectionism and dedication to his craft. He has a set vision of his various projects, which can often result in inflexibility and conflict with his colleagues. However, I don’t think that should be held against him in the same way as other actors who are hard to work with because they’re aggressive and rude.

The man should act , and leave the story alone for the ones who actually wrote the story, if he don't like the character don't play it in the first place, stop trying to change it like he know better than the writers

It makes sense that the mystery in first movie was super complex and smart, cause Ransom and Harlen are super smart and make complex mysteries/games. While in Glass Onion, Miles is an idiot so the mystery is a little easier to piece together. Love 1st movie more but still absolutely love this one too!

Couple of things about the ending that helps to remember. Why did they decide to turn on him? He lost his power. Removed from power the shitheads have no loyalty. It is what happened to Andi. They turned on her as soon as she was ousted from the company. Basically Miles lost his Golden Titties. Also they might be able to cover up that the gas was hydrogen. Although Benoit Blanc stating publicly he was running the house on it would make that difficult. Even if they covered up what caused the fire, it wouldn't cover the fact that the Mona Lisa was in a fireproof case that had an override installed by him. In any case being the guy who destroyed the Mona Lisa would make it impossible to work with him.

It wasn't just her breaking everything that spured them up. They didn't turn on Miles until after she says that his genius fuel just burned up the most famous painting in the world, effectively ruining him. It dawns on them that there's no teet left to cling onto, so they turn on him.

They didn't get spurred on by Helen smashing everything and then just decided to turn on Miles. After his invention destroyed the Mona Lisa, they know now that he is ruined. They now have nothing to gain by sticking with him. They no longer want to associate with him anymore, so they decided to turn on him. It's still a completely selfish act from all of them because they are still only concerned with their own reputations.

Holden, I think you misunderstood what happened in the end. The 'friends' didn't turned on Miles because they suddenly grew a conscience, but they bringing Miles down with them. Claire already signed off using Klear on powerplant. Lionel signed off using Klear on manned mission. They will go down after Klear burned MonaLisa. And Birdie already down because of Bangladesh factory. Speaking of Birdie, Miles kind of smart. He convinced Birdie to take the full responsibility for the Bangladesh factory by promising to pay her the value of her shares. Things is, her shares value definitely will going down after her statement release.

I've been going back and forth and maybe it's recency bias, but the more I think about it, if Glass Onion and Knives Out were both put in front of me and I had to pick one to watch, I think I'd gravitate toward Glass Onion. And I love Knives Out; I think it was my favorite movie (outside of Endgame) of 2019, but I feel like Glass Onion is a little more fun. It might have to do with the setting, of course. A dreary fall New England is less fun than a bright, sunny private island in Greece. (I feel like as someone from New England, I'm allowed to say that, right?? Haha)
