While I agree the story is fake, it usually has to do with the sheer amount of perfect detail. When backed into a corner people are absolutely capable of shutting down and doubling down onto the negative. If you can't lie, then they want to skip the guilt and blame in the moment so they don't seem weak. I, unfortunately, have had a similar circumstance, the only difference is I noticed how different she was acting and asked "You're really hurting right now, aren't you?" and she broke down hard. It's aversion, and yes they absolutely deserve the consequences of their actions, but they're still human and people will want to avoid pain and convince themselves of their own lies if necessary, especially if that's all that there is left to do. No one wants to feel like that 'bad guy', even if they are in that situation. Plus, as as Mevan883 said, there are some who legitimately do not care anymore and are done with the marriage and just didn't want to pull the trigger, at least yet. Maybe it was financial, maybe it was because the kids were still around, maybe they just didn't wanna jump deeper into the unknown and liked the existing security. However when the truth is finally out and there's nothing left to lose, why continue to live like that lie anymore? Scummy all around? Absolutely, but far from fiction in that behavior alone, after all you know what they say: "Truth is stranger than fiction".
