I'm always impressed by how many of her impressions are spot on! Glad Liz is still enjoying the series and I can't wait for her to read New Spring, I think she'd love MoirLan

Rand blacked out? It’s happened twice in the series… and both times Rand was badly injured and/or exhausted. In The Great Hunt, after he was stabbed in the side by Ishamael using his charred staff. And in The Fires of Heaven Rand basically drives himself to exhaustion channeling Saidin during The Battle of Cairhien, and passes out once he lets the Power go. The key development for me was the clear emergence of Lews Therin, the more exhausted Rand gets over the course of the battle. ‘Are you still so jealous of me Tel Janin? When did I ever spite you or give you one finger less than your due?’ And I loved how he curdled Asmodean’s face without realising by speaking out loud as Lews Therin! He says something like, ‘I remember when Sammael was first named The Destroyer of Hope. He carried The Shadow down through The Pass of the Rorn M’doi, into the heart of Satelle. Hope truly seemed to die that day. Culan Cuhan wept.’ And then he sees Asmodean’s face… ‘What is wrong?’ Fires of Heaven is full of little Lews Therin moments… even at the beginning in Rhuidean, when he first reveals his overall strategy to Moiraine & Egwene, about taking all the Aiel Clans (except Shaido) back into the Wetlands. ‘They will accept my Peace, or I will be buried in the Caen Brat!’ This book contains some of my favourite sequences to reread. Mat’s final steps to his Military Destiny, starting with his distilling of the Aiel Chiefs’ many layered war plans against the Shaido, while waiting for Rand to return to his tent, in order to tell him he’s leaving. And going all the way through to the morning after celebrations of a battle won. I even really enjoy some of the Chapter Titles. After the Arrow. The Craft of Kin Tovere. The Lesser Sadness. Then you have Nynaeve unwittingly pointing two different kinds of extremists, in Galad and Masema (the Prophet) at the same target… namely a boat. I love rereading Sulin’s confrontation with Rand, taking him to task about his misplaced chivalry not allowing her to be what and who jshe is. This, just after Moiraine has sacrificed herself battling Lanfear, is one of the most emotional beats in any book I’ve ever read. Gets me good, EVERY TIME! I’m enjoying these videos very much. I hope the voyage with Lord of Chaos is enjoyable for you. -g

So much happens in this book! I think that’s why I got a bit confused with Rand’s moments off the page. I was ready to dig into the journey in his mind and his perspective in the moment. And I think we’ve gotten a lot of that, I just always want more 😂 I love getting into the nitty gritty with the characters. The peaks of Lews Therin coming through are fascinating. Especially when Rand’s just been told over and over again that he’ll “go mad” but it’s obvious it’s so much more complicated than anyone on the outside knows. The circus his mind is having to go through is wild!

Liz's anxiety rating the book had me dying laughing 😂 Favorite character Mat! Least favorite Nynaeve... although I 180 on her further on in the series.

I had a similar experience with Nynaeve when I read the series as well. I’m interested to see how Liz’s thought on her evolve

Feeling lost whenever there is action. From what I've read and seen elsewhere this is sometimes intentional from Robert Jordan - apparently - especially in combat sequences. His experience was that in those situations people have tunnel vision, limited idea what's happening beyond what's in front of them, fog of war etc., so he often/always wrote action without making everything that was happening totally clear.
