They tried having Han say “I love you too” multiple times, but it just wasn’t working. So Harrison Ford improvised what he thought Han would say, and it was perfect. I saw a watch along that had Sam Witwer, who is in some star wars stuff, and when the scene happened, he said that it’s a moment of growth for Han because he looks at her like “I know, and I’m so sorry. This is gonna be hardest on you.” He’s worried about her and how what’s about to happen to him will affect her. That blew my mind! I never thought of it that way.

Yoda did teach Obi-Wan, along with all the other padwans when they first got to the Jedi Temple. (Later, they were paired up with a master.) Then at the end of Ep.3, Yoda told Obi-Wan that he would train him how to commune with Qui-Gon in the afterworld.

I was 8 when this came out. Me and my friends had no idea who “The Other” was. We had our little boy centric guesses, like maybe Boba Fett turns good, or it has to be Han, but we had no clue it was Leia. We were also clueless that Luke and Leia were siblings. Neither did any of our older brothers or dads. Then again, we were dumb and had no internet to speculate with back then.

There was really no way you could have even guessed that they were brother and sister, because *Lucas* decided to make them brother and sister only _after_ *The Empire Strikes Back.* At least as far as my friends and I recall, one of the reasons given back then was because *Lucas* was weary of *Star Wars* by the time he was working on *Return of the Jedi.* The thought of more *Star Wars* films was just too exhausting to contemplate. And he wanted to wrap it up. LSO, _the other_ was supposed to be someone else. Making them related allowed him to drop what he had planned later with _the other,_ as well as a way for him to tie up the _Luke Leia Han_ love triangle, without actually having to write anything.

Read an interview where Carrie Fisher said she had no memories from making Empire. She was having some major substance abuse issues at the time (cocaine). I think it shows in her performance that she kind of came across like she was phoning it in. Of course she eventually got treatment and overcame all of that, with some awesome stories to share.

There's a story in the making of TESB book that talks about how her late nights and presumed abuse was slowing production. George was in California during filming. But Carrie showed up late for work looking wasted and went to her dressing room. To her surprise Lucas was waiting for her. Nobody knows what was said behind closed doors but he left after about 15 minutes, didn't speak to anyone and presumably flew home. The story goes Carrie cleaned up her act for the rest of the shoot.

It works better because of the context, too. The whole movie she's been coping badly with her feelings for him by snarking at him and mocking him. And when it looks like he's about to die, she suddenly realizes that the only nice things she said to him in the whole movie were a backhanded compliment about his garbage dump maneuver and some praise in lieu of admitting her feelings about him leaving the Rebellion. She's been protecting herself, and he might die, so she feels like she HAS to let him know how she really feels. And "I know" is his reassurance that she has not been hurting him or leaving him in the dark. He has already shown his affection for her and put it out there throughout the movie, he even tells Chewie that the best thing he can do for Han is take care of Leia so he doesn't need to say it out loud right there the way that Leia did.

On the Carrie Fisher comment, you have to think of what her character has been through. Her home planet was destroyed, she's in the middle of a war, she's young and has a diplomatic role. She has suffered much loss and puts her personal sorrow aside to keep up the fight. She has romantic feelings that she may be confused by with a man that is leaving her. She has a lot going on and I think she suffers it quietly. If you watch her, you will see this in her character.

I've said it before. The novelization of the original trilogy makes it very clear, Lucas didn't have a grand plan from the beginning, but was rather figuring things out as he went. In fact the intro to the Return of the Jedi that I have makes it clear that they hadn't decided whether or not Leia would end up with Luke or Han. Of course making her Luke's sister wasn't that good of a solution when you step back and look at things (what does it really add when you think about it) Also, some fun behind the scenes A) the abominable snowman attack was used to explain the fact that Mark Hamill's face looked different after he was in a serious car accident. B) They tried a number of takes with Han saying "I love you too" but they didn't sound right. Then Han said "I know" and they went "THAT'S IT" C) The scene where Darth Vader says "I am your father" is not how it was filmed. Lucas didn't want the surprise being spoiled by someone leaking the secret, so they had the body actor for Darth Vader (who provided the voice on set while James Earl Jones provided the voice over) say to Mark Hamill "Obi Wan killed your father". (Seriously, watch Hamill's interview, sorry for explicit language kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaOrqIiBpZV2jac) That is the line that the production team knew about and that is the line that Mark Hamill is reacting to in that scene. You see the appeal, no one know what the actual twist is, but what they think the twist is also elicits the same kind of reaction. After they filmed it, Lucas took Hamill aside to tell him what the final product would actually say and told him "Only I and the writer know, and now you. So if it gets out, we know it was you." It was so secret that at the premiere when the cast finally saw the finished product, Harrison Ford was shocked that Hamill hadn't told him. To this day, it is probably the one of the best if not the best twist in movie history, not just because of how it was delivered, but because that twist itself is the basis for all the movies going forward. The next film is where they deal with the twist. The prequels are based on how this twist came to be. Everyone knows this line (albeit they quote it wrong constantly, it's not "Luke I am your father"). And even after you know it, it's still an engaging story. But more importantly, if you show the series to anyone who is not familiar with it, and they watch this scene, it leaves a lot of people questioning. So many of them say "He's lying, right?" or they simply don't know how to accept it (in the moment, they get over it quickly). And it's not just children, adults have this reaction too (I think even Mark Hamill thought it might be a lie). For children, it can be the first time in their lives where they start to question their concepts of good and evil. The idea that things aren't so black and white. That single line pretty much defined the attitude of Star Wars from that point on.

I just want to add that Yoda's advice to "let go" wasn't bad advice. Anakin turned to the dark side because he could not let go of Padme. Luke nearly died on Bespin because he could not let go of his friends. A Jedi is supposed to be selfless because these attachments could lead to the dark side, and they show this again and again.

From What I remember, there was no one thinking Luke and Leia were siblings after this movie. At the time it was a Han-Leia-Luke romantic triangle. I was interested in seeing then 3rd movie to see who she ended up choosing. A lot of the "There is another" speculation was centered on Boba-Fett. But Remember, there was no internet back then, so there was not a lot of avenues to read discussions. There were some books and articles, but mainly it was just discussion with friends.

If we wanna get technical, both answers are right. Yoda taught younglings; that would make him their Master. When they get old enough, they're basically giving the training one on one with a different Master. So Yoda was his Master in childhood, and Qui Gon was for the rest of the person.

He is the only person I know who said this at the time. None of the kisses Leia & Luke shared throughout the films were "making out". Even the extended one she planted on him early in this movie to take Han down a few pegs was clearly not full of passion or lust (or tongue), but just for show. Like she says in RotJ, on some instinctual level, she always knew that the nature of their fondness for each other wasn't romantic, and their kisses always reflected that (at least to my eyes).

Yeah Billy Dee Williams is a fantastic actor. There are actors that are just top notch and better than any other around them, sort of setting the bar. I feel that Patrick Stewart did that with Star Trek the next generation. And the biggest one was Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins was only on screen for about 16 minutes but is the most remembered of the characters in the story even though he wasn't the main focus.

@see jane go TV Hey guys. Just to give you a little info as to what was going on behind the scenes when making star wars back in the 70s. From what I understood luke did have a sister, but it originally was going to be someone else. Leia and Luke was not suppose to be brother and sister originally, but by the time they decide to work on Return of the Jedi, or Revenge of the Jedi as the original title, everyone was so sick and tired of working on star wars. George Lucas at the very last second decided to make Leia his sister as a way to finish everything in one go. One of the very, very early drafts of what the sequel trilogy was going to be about was finding Luke's long lost sister who has been training in the jedi arts since she was very little kid. That idea got scrapped though so we ended up having Leia as the sister. Nobody at all theorized it. Alot of them think when Vader told luke "I am your father" that he was lying about it. Nobody belived Vader at the time so they asumed he was just saying that to get luke to join him. Thats about all I know for certain.

I was around when this was in theaters. The speculation was at a fever pitch until Return of the Jedi. As I recall it boiled down to the idea that the Other could be Han Solo, Luke's mother, Leia or a new character.

It's funny cause Carie is actually the only main actress that I find convincing, I find Rey and Padme way to overdramatic and annoying. I think leia is much more realistic.

You say that Yoda gave Luke bad advice about going to save his friends but was it bad advice? Luke didnt save anyone, infact he blundered straight in to a trap, his friends freed themselves via Lando, and then they actually had to go back and endanger their own lives to rescue Luke!
