On the Ethernet cable you're going to run to the shop, I would suggest running fiber. You'll be far more prone to blowing up Ethernet switches and/or equipment when you're running copper. Fiber transceivers are pretty inexpensive, as is the fiber. Either that, or if you have line of sight between the house and the shop, you could run a dedicated radio link, using something like a MikroTik wAP 60G AP and a Cube 60Pro ac. There are solutions from Ubiquity and others, also. But whether it's fiber or RF, you really want to keep the two buildings electrically isolated. Even underground, if you get a nearby lightning strike, you'll introduce enough energy on to the wire to cause equipment damage. And if it's over 100 meters between buildings, you'll start hitting distance limits using Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a. For fiber, I'd use multimode (as opposed to single mode) fiber, and something like a pair of TRENDnet TFC-GMSC transceivers or maybe one of the FASTCABLING kits.
@SpicerDesignsLLCАй бұрын
Thanks for the info. I already trenched it in since this video. I used a cat 6. I k ow the limit is 300’ and im at 368’. Not ideal but its just for shop wifi. I may take your advice and pull in a fiber in the future though. Thanks
@JCWrenАй бұрын
@@SpicerDesignsLLC I'd recommend installing a pair of Ethernet lightning arrestors, something like a Ubiquiti Networks ETH-SP-G2 Surge Protector. I don't >think< they'll affect your Ethernet performance, but I've not used them on runs that long.
@SpicerDesignsLLCАй бұрын
I will check it out. I dont want to cause any harm to all this expensive starlink equipment.
@tmbflyerАй бұрын
Using a shielded Ethernet cable (STP or FTP) designed for outdoor use and ensuring it is properly grounded at both ends can significantly mitigate the risk of damage from lightning. The shielding prevents electromagnetic interference, including static and induced surges from nearby lightning strikes, from reaching the data-carrying wires inside the cable. Grounding the shield allows any electrical surge to be safely discharged into the ground, protecting your equipment. For additional peace of mind, lightning arrestors can be installed at both ends of the cable. These devices are specifically designed to protect network infrastructure by redirecting any surge caused by lightning to the ground, further minimizing the risk of damage.

368ft isn't too bad, but it may see some errors and possibly randomly drop the link speed from gigabit down to 100meg. I'll give a +1 for the fiber. I just put up a camera on my shed about 90ft away. Obviously less than the 100-meter ethernet limit, but I ran a fiber for the electrical isolation. I trenched some 3/4" PVC. Went with an armored simplex single-mode fiber with LC connectors. About $30 on Amazon. Smaller than duplex ends, so easier to pull and less damage risk, plus no need to buy a fiber prep/termination kit to put mechanical connectors on. Used a pair of QSFPtek 1310/1550 bi-directional SFPs. The 3km kit on Amazon for $22. Then a 4-port POE switch with an SFP slot at the shed to power the camera. I believe that was about $100. Worked out nice.

Enjoy the video as always. In the Marine Corps, back in the day, we learned how to make a "Swiss Seat" from a section of rope. This would act as an improvised repelling rig and was super strong and light to carry with the rest of the gear we had. Look up how to make one on KZbin. There are plenty of videos out there on how to do it. Get some simple climbing gear and use it to secure yourself when you go vertical. I don't think the keystone girl or your daughters want to see you falling out of any tree. Be safe brother.

I know you've dug the ditch, but look at a point-to-point wireless bridge. Ubiquiti makes some good and inexpensive gear. They can be used much longer distances, talking miles, line of sight. You can adjust signal strength to overcome foliage. Important to be concerned about different ground potential with wired systems. Be careful though, because once you get connected, you might find yourself living in your shop.
