I've watched this movie for years and I'm just now realizing they couldn't have Diego with the group when they returned the baby, the humans would either run or attack without wondering if the giant predator is friendly or not lol. at least with a mammoth and a sloth you know they're probably not going to try to eat you. it's great that movies like this hold up so well over the years too because now my little nephew gets to enjoy it as much as I did growing up.
@jacob49206 ай бұрын
If Diego had been a wolf, instead of a tiger, the humans would have given him the benefit of the doubt. lol But cats were not really domesticated until much later than dogs were, hence why humans in general are just not as attached to them. So yeah... Diego would have ruined everything. I feel like Diego knew this, and actually FAKED his death, so the group could leave without him, and do their thing, without his presence dragging everything down. And then he just comes up with the whole "nine lives" excuse later on, to play off the entire thing as "I just needed a nap."

Friendly reminder that, if Sid was portrayed correctly to actual ancient sloths, he would have whooped Diego and the other saber-toothed cats' butts and turned them into his lunch and dinner.
@jacob49206 ай бұрын
That's if he was a GIANT sloth (which did exist). Sid is clearly not that. He's just a regular old ground sloth (that ironically is the only species of animal portrayed in this movie that actually outlasts the Ice Age, and lives on for considerably longer than that). lol
@KyleAllen0016 ай бұрын
@@jacob4920 Oh really? I didn't know about that, I thought giant sloths were the only ones around at the time, that's my bad. Thank you.
@jacob49206 ай бұрын
@@KyleAllen001 If Sid were a giant sloth, he'd be half the size of Manny. As it is, he's smaller even than the humans are. That's a regular sloth if ever there was one. Now, it's arguable as to whether regular sized sloths, as we know them today, were even alive back in the last Ice Age, or if they simply evolved from their more gigantic cousins, because being smaller was more efficient for their survival. Whatever the truth is, this film intended for Sid to be "just a sloth," and that's what makes his character so funny. Because he's so out of place amongst everything else.
@nikocalderon62016 ай бұрын
Not so "fun" fact: You find out during Manny's flashback scene that he lost his family. In the beginning of the movie, it's highly theorized that Manny is going the opposite direction of all the other animals during migration because he wants to stay and die alone in the coming Winter.

3:45 These two are Macrauchenia, an extinct relative of camels and llamas. The trunk on their face was purely speculative due to the shape of the nasal part of the skull, so we still don't know for certain how they looked like in life. But, most paleontologists today agree that it most likely had a drooping nose like a modern day Saiga Antelope. All the animals featured(except for two in the second movie) did exist in real life, including the car-sized armadillos(aka Glyptodonts) and ground-sloths like Sid. Bonus trivia: ground-sloths grew to ginormous sizes, particularly the south american ground-sloth the size of an african elephant, and they dug dens and tunnels that can still be found today.

"Ice Age" is TIMELESS, because of its' intrinsic simplicity. Also, the characters are all very well put together. And most importantly of all, the movie makers used the similarly timeless trope of "KILL THE MOTHER!!!" to give this movie the strong emotional under-punch that it needed, to truly succeed. lol Also, Diego's character transformation is a truly nice touch. Goes from being a gangmember (essentially) to being a square solid citizen of the "herd" that forms out of this team up. Just a nice movie all around. I still love it, even 22 years after it first came out. The sequels... well... The sequels are all certainly "sequels"...
