Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three t66 turbos with nos, and a motec exhaust system.

The greatness of this movie is the cheesy one liners. "Tuna, no crust", "More than you can afford pal, Ferrari", "I'm in your face!" etc. This movie was also a big reason for the rise in popularity of the car culture in the early 2000s, especially here in southern California. They might look like regular cars, but that's the point. They aren't fancy, expensive sports cars (although a LOT of the cars in this movie are VERY expensive to buy now). These 90s cars are so respected in the scene (RX7, Eclipse, Skyline, S2000 to name a few). They were the cars that normal people like us could possibly attain in our lives, which amazed young high school kids like myself. The popularity of the franchise amongst car enthusiasts definitely peaked early in this franchise, but it's what kept many people coming back. Entire car meets were held at movie theaters at every single movie release. It was a movie that brought a lot of people together, and this movie will always have a special place in my heart.

As someone who loves cars, they sadly have gone too far with the last few films, to the point of absurdity. However, to me fast 5 was a fantastic action film. Obviously nothing Oscar worthy, but just a fun ride. I hate to admit how many times I’ve watched the final chase scene in that movie but it’s awesome. So I’d definitely recommend making it through at least 5 but probably through the Paul walker films. R.I.P

To put into perspective the way the cars look was a product of its time. When this movie came out this is when import culture was at its golden age and those cars might as well have jumped out of the JDM tuner magazines. Now they're more toned down and more OEM+ looking. Basically the tuner culture has grown up since then.

During the early 2000's, things like Hot Import Nights and tuner mags like DSport; Super Street and Import Tuner were extremely popular. Most car modifications were very expensive [i.e. $10-12k for a JDM bodykit or $3-5k for JDM style wheels]. Some of us really did meet up in parking lots after hours just to hang out, talk and show off our cars. It was all fun until guys started getting married, having kids and their priorities changed. This movie was based on an article about the street racing culture and if you really want to know more, follow Craig Lieberman. He actually owned that orange Supra and was responsible for securing and coordinating most of the cars and owners seen in the movies.

Note for the uninitiated: Just like Star Wars, these movies were not released in chronological order. However UNLIKE Star Wars, the chrono order is actually the best way to watch these movies, so Holden as you continue your journey showing these to Jen, this would be the recommended way to watch them: Start with (1) The Fast and The Furious Next is (2) 2 Fast 2 Furious SKIP 3 Go straight to (4) Fast & Furious Then (5) Fast Five Then (6) Fast & Furious 6 but NOT the post-credit scene yet (it spoils Tokyo Drift) NOW go back to (3) Tokyo Drift Go back to (6) and watch the post-credit scene to get the full context of Tokyo Drift Watch the remainder of the series in release order: (7) Furious Seven, (8) Fate of the Furious, (8.5) Hobbs & Shaw, (9) F9 the Fast Saga, (10) Fast X Edit: Some of them have post-credit scenes but not all, so I'd just stick around for all of them anyways, just in case

The reason they are all mostly civics is because the 90’s and up car scene was seriously based on customizing and tuning the car your parents gave you or what they drove previously, alot of Honda civics were driven by parents and passed to their kids. It was all based off of 80’s and up japanese car tuning, some of those kids dads were hot rodders in the 60’s and 70’s like mine so it was an easy and supported transition. There are certain holy grail cars from those times that are now skyrocketing in value, Supras, Skylines, and RX7’s to name a few. Back before cell phones, it was all word of mouth. Youd hear a rumor of a Wednesday night meetup coming and youd just drive out every Wednesday night of the month until you hit jackpot. All those wednesday nights that a meetup was never found, there were countless light to light street races from other wanderers looking for probably the same meet. It was an awesome time.

If I'm not mistaken, Vin didn't think this movie and his character would take off so he wasn't in line to do a second movie, so Paul did the second one, and then they recast everyone for the third one, but because each movie did so well at the box office, they kept being given the opportunity to keep making more fast movies. By the fourth film Paul and Vin come back, and then by the fifth it just becomes a movie franchise about bringing back every character that they can. By 6, 7, and 8 they bring in bigger actors like the Rock, Jason Statham, and John Cena.

This movie was one of those cultural touchstones that was inescapable when it came out and remains a great time capsule of the early 2000s. 20:14 - fun fact about that scene My Uncle Frank took me to Neptunes Net for lunch after an interview I had in Ventura. I didn't know it at the time but we were sitting in the same spots as Paul and Vin. I later learned I got the job while watching this movie with my buddy a few days before the seventh (and final Paul) movie came out. My Uncle passed away a few short years later but every time I see this scene, I get to relieve that moment with him. It is a tourist trap now, being shot in so many movies, but if you ever want some good fish tacos and some good cold beer on the beach...look no further. Thanks for the tacos, Uncle. Love you lots

This movie is basically Point Break but with cars. Virtually all aspects are the same, even down to the failed final heist/robbery

The first 3 movies are so good! I grew up watching the first 2 and I have memorized entire chunks from them! The rest are still a fun time but the story and music in the first 2 is just _chefs kiss_ “Let’s go ahead and get into it cuh!” Holden is such a meme lord I love it 6:55 the actor’s name is Noel G and he actually visited my HS my freshman year and gave a speech and I got to meet him. He’s a really chill and funny dude. Always love seeing him in movies

After the rise in popularity that was back then, "the fast and the furious" and its sequel too fast too furious. Teens specially in the USA and South America, started racing in the streets. Some of them died, due to how fast they were going. Back to the movie. Dom's car in the final scenes of the movie is a modified Doge Charger, while Bryans car is a Toyota Supra.

A little car knowledge for Jen and Holden: Nitrous oxide also known as NOS is typically used during street races because it has the potential to provide a short burst of power to a vehicle. The compound does this by increasing the amount of oxygen present in the engine's cylinders during combustion which produces stronger explosions inside the cylinders and thus more power. Laptops are usually used to reprogram the onboard computer of cars (although not usually while driving it) mainly to tune the engine for more horsepower. Since car manufacturers over-engineer the engines for a longer life and reliability, if you are willing compromise a bit you can extract extra horsepower to a car by doing these things. Hondas are known for their reliability, and the brand itself has a long history in racing. Out of all the cars that you can tune up to "have some fun with" they have been historically one of the most affordable brands. This movie made Mitsubishi Eclipse (the green car from the beginning) a very sough after car for quite a few years after the movie, specially by young men, and catapulted the Toyota Supra (the orange car) as a crowd favorite for modding (modifying it) and make it extremely fast, specially since Toyotas are probably the most reliable Japanese brand in existence. To this day, 20 years old Toyota Supras 4th generation, like the one in the movie, are still highly valued in the use car community, and go for about 40,000 USD; on May 2019 Toyota cashed in on the pedigree of this car, by releasing the new Toyota Supra Mark 5 (although it was a collaboration with BMW and mechanically it is a BMW Z4 with a Toyota designed interior) with many people calling it a cash grab.

To answer your wife's question in teh beginning this kind of stuff absolutely happened. Every Friday and Saturday night in DFW TX. 200- 400 cars would show up at a few different meeting spots for "Car club" and then after a while we would head out for a cruise to a local industrial area or new construction neighborhood for a night of racing. We had 6 or 7 really good spots and if the cops showed up at any spot it would be a mad scramble to get out and usually the cops just wanted to run people off. Not many tickets were ever given out. We would then head down the road to the next spot in a neighboring town. You would see anything from 150hp Honda Civics to 2000+hp trailer queens showing up to race. 16 y/o kids to 60+ y/o men. This was a major part of my life from like 19 - 30.

honestly, the way you guys approached this one was perfect; paying attention to the story but still able to laugh at the ridiculousness and make your own dumb commentary to go along with it. this movie is so wildly of it's time, there's no other way imo lol

Did you know ludacris' character Tej was originally meant for Ja Rule? The director specifically made it for him cause he liked him so much. But by the time they were gonna shoot 2 Fast, Rule was already hitting top fame at the time and turned down the role, so the director opted out for Luda. Imagine having Rule for the rest of the series.

This franchise was founded on the street race culture and daring car related heists. Dom and his family are absolutely the 'villains' when it comes down to it. However, they are also the characters you're meant to love. The single most important thing to keep in mind with this franchise is that physics don't matter when behind the wheel and each movie serves to one-up itself. It's simple, you can either enjoy ridiculous over the top action and have fun with these, or you cannot in which case I recommend stopping now. The later movies really take a hard turn into being 'generic action flick with cars'. But for many people such as myself, that is fine. I'm more than happy with simply seeing crazy car stunts. The later films start to use more and more CGI yes, but it's also extremely impressive seeing that many of the wild stunts were done practically. In Fast Five, the bank vault scene at the end was done for real. Yep, one of the most destructive chase scenes in cinema history was done practically.
