Around a millenium before the events of The Phantom Menace, there used to be a Sith Army but the acient Jedi order managed to defeat the whole order except for one Sith Lord named Darth Bane got away and hid himself. He founded The Rule of Two, which Yoda does say at the end of Episode 1: "Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.", as the Sith had a huge flaw with them being power hungry (like with Vader in Empire wanted Luke to join him so they can overthrow The Emperor so they can rule The Galaxy) that they betray one and other to be the ruling Sith, which was partly the reason for The Sith Empire's downfall. That's what Maul refers to he and Sidious will get their revenge.

The "rat tail" of Obi Wan shows that he is a padawan learner, an apprentice, not a Jedi Knight yet. The final fight, sounding "Duel of the fates", it´s one of the best in the franchise for me. Legendary.

The very best, the sound design (lightsabers sounded more visceral in this film for whatever reason), the balance between aesthetics and practicality of the moves of the duelists, the stakes build-up, the music, MAUL. incredible.

Well, I wouldn't say horrible but he looked a bit too different from Yoda did in prequel trilogy and being a creature that can live for centuries, it didn't make sense that he look so much different in 10 years time unlike his human peers who potentially only is able to live for a century or less. It's a good call he was changed to a CG Yoda that resembles his look in the other episodes, a plus was that he got more expressive. Originally Yoda looked content at the celebration but now he can't shake his feeling about the other Sith is still on the loose and nobody knows who it is.

2 things: 1) They did make a game on podracing in the 90s 2) Anakins fate was sealed with Qui Gon's death. As he lost a father figure when he needed it just after separating from his mother. Instead of a father figure, he got a brother figure fresh out into Jedi Knight role
@mevb
@mevb 13 күн бұрын
And Qui-Gon would have taught Anakin better to use his feelings without letting them consume him unlike the traditional Jedi teaching where you must take control over them all the time, which Anakin will have problem with as he matures. If he did that, then Emperor couldn't have persuaded Anakin to go the Dark Side and therefore could have killed him much earlier and The Empire wouldn't have existed.

When the "timer-shields" are in the way of Qui-Gon and Maul, you can really see the inherent difference between Jedi and Sith. The Jedi will meditate and find his calm, while the Sith will cultivate his anger in order to find strength. Obi-Wan did the "wrong" thing in his fight with Maul, he let his emotions control him, and he nearly lost because of it. When he hung over the abyss, he managed to center himself again, and formulated a strategy that let him win.

Glad you guys get to share these films in this way. I hope you continue delving into the other films and shows. You may have to grab some storylines from the Clone Wars while you're at it. For Steph: There is a bit of lore that everyone in the '70s and '80s knew, especially due to things like the sale of action figures and what not, and I think it is only fair for you to know going into the prequels (as all the long-time fans knew this before watching the prequels, and so this is not "spoiling" anything for you), and that is Princess Leia's last name. Princess Leia Organa.

Darth Maul talks about revenge because in SW lore, thousands of years before there was a huge galactic war of Jedi VS Sith. At that time, there were many Sith around. Eventually, the Jedi won the war and thought the Sith to be extinct. But there was a Sith called Darth Bane who survived and understood that for the Sith to go on they would need to be discreet and hidden. That's why there are always two Sith around; that's the "Rule of Two", because they can act withouth being discovered by the Jedi. Now, with Darth Sidious and the whole Anakin thing, he realizes this could be the right time to set the revenge in motion...

22:45 That extra bit of Anakin reattaching one of his pod’s cable mid-race wasn’t in the original theatrical release or the VHS. A few minutes were added to the first DVD (this, some other slight extensions of the earlier laps, introductions of more racers, Anakin’s mom wishing him safety for the race, an alternate taxi trip off the ship after landing on Coruscant). I believe these were all always intended to be in the film but the special effects couldn’t be finished in time for the premiere. Myself, I don’t like the additions much: the added racer introductions mean nothing and this bit here takes away the tensions of the main “fixing the pod on the fly” part of the climax. Makes the tense set piece a bit puffier too. But given the prequels are divisive, there’s very little demand for the original cut relative to the Special Editions. Possibly universal agreement that the Yoda puppet used in the theatrical cut here is bad has a lot to do with that (BTW, the replacement was done as a tech-demo in-house before they fully committed to Yoda for Episode II, but it didn’t get added publicly until the Blu-Ray in 2011).

In 1991-1997 there was some comics called Tales of the Jedi. It told 3,000 years ago before episode 4. The Jedi were in a huge war with the Sith. In a war called Huyperspace war, then the Sith war. Then in 2003 a video game came out called Knights of the Old Republic and s ecound game. Then they made an online game the Old Republic. Then there are many books. One good one to read after the Tales of the Jedi is called Darth Bane. He made the Rule of two Sith.

The Phantom Menace is very underrated and their is a lot of controversy surrounding it and the former actor Jake Loyd. For me, this was one of the best in the Star Wars series. I really enjoyed it. Darth Maul was just amazing, and that double edged saber would be my weapon of choice...The Sith were thought to be extinct for 1000 years; that was the last great battle between the Jedi and the Sith. Their was a lot of infighting in the Sith order so the rule of two(2) was implemented to give a higher chance of victory and greater power..

35:38 "How is he so strong...?" Darth Maul is a Zabrak man born on the planet Dathomir. This planet is ruled by a matriarchal system, the Nightsisters, a sect of Force-sensitive witches. Maul is son of a Zabrak martial artist and a powerful Nightsister. He was a young child when Palpatine kidnapped him from the planet because he saw great potential in him. He then subjected him to decades of ruthless training, where his survival was constantly at stake. He sent assassin droids at him and led Force-sensitive opponents, sometimes stronger and stronger dark, fallen Jedi, in his path, so that the young Maul would either develop or fall. To fuel his apprentice's hatred of the Jedi, Darth Sidious took Maul to the planet Malachor, where the Sith had fought a great battle against them millennia earlier, and all of them had died. Breathing in the dust of the burned warriors, Maul had a vision of the battle, in which the Jedi had slaughtered the dark siders. From then on, Maul was driven by hatred and a desire for revenge.

A Little bit of info: The sith in the older republic (3000 years earlier than The Phantom Menace) owned half the galaxy and fought the Republic. They were defeated and have now be gone for 1000 years; almost forgotten even by the jedi. The last Sith Lord in power 1000 years ago, was Darth Bane, which was the one introduced the theory of "rule of two" as Darth Sidious is using; to only have one apprentice. Too many apprentices for a sith could be threatening if they wish to kill their master and seek power. The Sith now seeks revenge and wants the galaxy back. They are a far-right movement that stands for strength and dominance over everything else. Obi-Wan used a slight amount of anger in the fight after Qui-Gon´s death, but the main difference here is that Obi-Wan is a jedi guardian. Jedi guardians use blue lightsabers and they are trained mainly in lightsaber combat; and are masters of it. They use the force as a second tool and to focus their lightsaber skill. Qui-Gon is a jedi consular. The consular focus more on the force and use combat as a last resort. The consular use green lightsabers. Great reaction, guys. Once again, greatest reaction channel on KZbin. Honest and genuine.

The notion of revenge is from the Old Republic, centuries before the Republic of this film, when Sith and Jedi were opposed. Jedi is an brotherhood, and Sith goes always by two : a master and a apprentice (it called The Rule of Two, and the apprentice have to learn before kill his own master, then take an apprentice). Jedi as won the long war against the Sith who were supposed to be gone. Thats why Darth Maul talked about revenge.
@modernoto10
@modernoto10 13 күн бұрын
To add, ~1,000 years before these movies there was the Republic with the Jedi versus the Sith army called the Brotherhood of Darkness. The Jedi defeated the Sith and only Darth Bane survived, creating the Rule of Two. There would only ever be two Sith after that, "one to embody the power, and the other to crave it." The "revenge" stems back to that.

Yep, the Sith Empire was very different from this era of Sith. There were thousands of Sith with their own council and society until they were defeated and Bane established the Rule of Two. They switched up their method and instead of a full on assault they were working from the shadows, quietly moving the pieces into place, gaining wealth and power to execute the Grand Plan. Orchestrating the Clone Wars wasn't Palpatine's plan, he was just happened to be the one in power when happened. He was the Catalyst though, a very charismatic politician from a peaceful planet, very strong with the Force, a perfect candidate to take over the Senate and finish the final act of the plan. His master was still alive during the events of this movie. The Plageuis novel is quite fascinating.

I’ve always thought these prequel movies had their titles mixed up. This one should be “Revenge of the Sith” because they return and kill Qui-Gon and start to enact their plans. The second should be “the Phantom Menace” because the characters are trying to figure out who’s pulling the strings. The third, for obvious reasons if you’ve seen it should be “Attack of the Clones”. But anyway, it’s so fun to see Steph discover these movies for the first time 😊

The theory with Anakin is that if Qui Gon has survived, he would have been the father figure he needed to be a jedi. Obi wan was like a brother however and this was a major factor on why Anakin struggled - mainly because the father figure he needed became another significant (evil) character
@abadalfa
@abadalfa 13 күн бұрын
The 'revenge' part is implied in some of the dialogue of the trilogy like "The Sith have been extinct for a millennium". They go 1 or 2 lines per movie, and to understand that very small subplot of the Sith really doesn't alter the main story, it just adds to the drama. There is however an official background told by George Lucas himself, often misinterpreted by the authors outside the movies, who basically came up with their own stories. BUT according to Lucas before the thousand years of Galactic Peace, the Sith were like the feudal warlords and rulers in the systems and regions around the Galaxy (hence the title 'Lord'); who betrayed, dethroned and destroyed each other, while the influence of the Republic kept growing and more systems decided to join. There was never a Jedi-Sith "war". The Jedi were conciliators, who happened to be raised as monks and guardians, and were able to defend from Sith one-on-one. With the Sith gone, the Republic became a Galactic Civilization. So the remaining Sith blamed the Jedi, more out of spite than anything for changing the mindset of the political world.

The fictional "midichlorians" are based on real-life mitochondria, which provide energy for individual cells in most animals. Mitochondria have their own genetic blueprints, which are distinct from the those of cell nuclei. In the Star Wars universe, Midichlorians enable sentient beings to feel and use the Force. George Lucas created the idea of midichlorians to explain why some people have no Force abilities, with others having strong abilities.

Sith were around for thousands of years, mortal enemies of the jedi. About 2,000 years before Episode I Dark Revan came up with the "Rule of Two" meaning there can only be two sith (Master & Apprentice) as opposed to multiple sith trying to work together. Over the years the sith got weaker and upon discovering that theory Revan came up with, Darth Bane put the Rule of Two in motion, killing all the sith and going into hiding after taking an apprentice of his own, a young nine year old girl who became Darth Zannah. For 1,000 years the sith lay in wait until they were powerful enough to rise, overthrow the jedi and rule the galaxy. P.S. Did I mention I LOVE Steph's reactions....... and her bunny ears!!

you have to remember the first three movies involved a cripple, and old man and an apprentice. the powers on display are somewhat subdued. in the prequel trilogy it's the jedi and Sith in their prime and it shows

19:30 this really divided the fanbase, many didn’t like the addition of Midichlorians and felt it took away the mystique of The Force, but for me, it actually makes sense as to how someone can be stronger in The Force than others, eg Obi-Wan isn’t as Force attuned and his strength comes more through his own wisdom and learnings than through a natural affinity, whereas Anakin has a natural affinity that he doesn’t yet have the wisdom of or even understand but is very powerful. Yoda is powerful due to a high count and also hundreds of years of wisdom. 21:11 don’t think, just do, if you you think, you’re dead… oh wait, wrong movie 😂 25:49 right before this there’s a deleted scene that was originally in the theatrical release when it first came out in cinemas (July 1999), I never understood why they cut it because it shows why Qui-Gon and Anakin are running - Qui-Gon sees one of Maul’s drones and slices it in half, and realising that they have been discovered he tells Anakin they have to hurry. It’s literally about 30 seconds and gives exposition to this next scene, and as I said, they kept it in for the original release in cinema but then removed it and I don’t know why. It annoyed me so much because when I told people about it, they thought I had imagined it - but you can find it here on KZbin, and in the extras on the DVD/Blu-Ray boxsets. 35:37 The Darkside is a pathway to many abilities some consider… unnatural 😅

Yeah, If you are like me an only saw the "regular" cut of the movie before, they cut out a couple of scenes of Anakin fixing the pod whilst racing. The sequence is much shorter without these extra scenes, but the extra scenes make the scene way more impressive.

Ok, Liam and Steph. Way back 2o years ago, when the prequels came to be, the fans of the trilogy were quite vocal in their dislike of a few things. Jar-Jar was soundly disliked by the fans. He was thought of as juvenile, dumb, and unnecessary. He was added to appeal to a younger base. Which at the time you were a part of. The lack of screen time for Darth Maul could have been more fully explored if not for Jar-Jar. Anakin's origin sparked debate as to whether George Lucas was creating a narrative based on religious teachings, which was a bit controversial. Liam Neeson could have been given more room to breathe in the second installment to begin teaching Anakin. The reaction Steph had to the new material was wonderful. She is open and emotionally invested in the story as it unfolds. And Liam, you have done a great job in holding your opinion to let her find her own way. Keep going and enjoy the movies.

Ahmed Best wanted to kill himself because of the hate he got for the character of Jar Jar. He didn’t, which is good. Darth Maul was going to have more lines. But they were cut out. The guy who does the voice for Darth Maul didn’t receive an invitation for the Premiere and had to get his own ticket, flight, hotel reservation, etc. A d*ck move by George Lucas.

That isn't Anakin's Episode 2 lightsaber you have in the beginning, it's his Episode 3 lightsaber. His Ep 2 lightsaber is basically a thinner, chrome version of the Vader lightsaber, while the Ep 3 one you have is supposed to be the one Luke inherits in the original film, though there are differences in the props because the originals were made from old camera "flashguns" with other small parts attached to them, while the Ep 2 and Ep 3 props were scratch-built to somewhat resemble them without being exact.

Maybe it’s my nostalgia bias, but Darth Maul was the most badass Sith ever! The acrobatics, the look, and lack of talking meant he was all business. When he revealed his staff lightsaber in the theater, I lost my proverbial mind! No one had scene a saber like that before. It was nucking futs!!

Before Disney bought Star Wars there was something called the Star Wars Extended Universe. This started with books by Timothy Zahn, Marvel comics from the 80s, graphic novels and computer games. Everything that came out fit into the SWEU timeline and had to be strictly approved by Lucasarts. There were books and games about The Old Republic which is mentioned in ep IV which goes back tens of thousands of years in which there were Jedi and Sith. So when these prequels came out that WAS the lore. However when Disney bought Star Wars they binned the SWEU which is no longer considered cannon.

The revenge line comes from previous sith empires. They aren't new, they've been around as long as the jedi. They have changed from era to era tho. For example, yoda's line about there always being 2 sith, that comes from an old sith lord called darth bane. Noticing the sith betraying each other weakened them against the jedi, he decreed that only 2 sith lords should exist at once, master and apprentice

I saw the 1st Star Wars as a kid at an outdoor theater and was hooked. When the three came out, that you are currently watching, I was not in the least bit disappointed.. As a matter of fact, I loved every one of them except Rogue One. The story was very good, but the charterers were very forgettable to me. Im looking forward to watching the rest on your channel.

Thank god for you two so many people have been watching stuff I'm not into for months now. But what I will say Liam I'll point out a few things after episode 3 and it's complete. This was more time maybe because of your age at the time. Obviously the cinema time was star wars for me being older. But I lived and breathed star wars through my childhood. The figures and merch so I noticed stuff maybe others didn't. Then when you see this you see it more. Darth maul for me awesome and I think was a bad decision to kill him off straight away.
