I got my Soulo 4 years ago from George Fisher in Keswick for £550 with a free footprint. I thought that was a huge amount for a tent, and now I see the price and it's astounding. Another point you made is our climate, it's damp, wet, cold, and windy, this is the reason I always use high end synthetics rather than down. Even if you keep down as dry as possible, after a few days it will be damp and you will lose insulation. With wool and synthetic byoull be warmer and tbh there isn't much weight difference bthese days.

And the end still came too soon. Will watch again. Thanks for the insight and wealth of information. I know how wonderful a hot water bag can be. In New Zealand we called it a "hotty Bag." I spent Christmas in the Texas, desert mountains and the night temperature was below freezing. Though I was in the back country my vehicle was nearby along with my 50,000 BTU gas stove. But water was scarce and besides: no hotty bag. The mountains are made of rock, so rock is what used. It was about 8" x 10" x 2". I put it on the stove and turned up the flame until it was very hot but not quite unsafe. (No one came by at that time but had they done so, they would have thought that I was starving.) Then I rolled it up in an old terry cloth bath towel so it would release its heat at a reasonable rate. It helped greatly. Now you know why I had to smile when you pulled out your trusty hotty bag. Thanks so much Pat, for the good company and you will be pleased to know that you are just as great company the second time I watch. Take Care. ~Peter

I'm glad you mentioned the importance of wearing a hat in cold weather. From experience of decades I find that keeping head, feet and hands insulated makes for a safer and more comfortable walk/camp. I very often wear my hat in bed when camping in cold weather; gives me a much better sleep. A buff is also essential in any season. As you mention it is a good seal to your jacket when worn around your neck. I wear mine like a bandanna in sunny weather as I am a bald bloke and it protects my scalp from ultra violet when wearing a hat gets a bit sweaty. Also, in today's restrictive environment, a buff worn around the neck provides an instant face covering when lifted over nose and mouth. Very important when wanting to enter a shop, cafe or pu when camping! Excellent video, keep on camping.

Yep I been there. Up to my knees in a Gruff. And on Dartmoor I stood on some moss and found myself going down 2 feet then a big splashing sound of water underneath and then springing back up in the air by 4 feet. Thank god I didn't go through the moss. As I quickly jumped of again. Boy my heart was going. I've done the gruff 's in fog before but in a team doing training leap frogging to keep a straight route across the Moor. Fun a games doing it but it teaches you how straight you can go from one point to the end of your route and not get lost. Good old day training. Thanks Jim some good gear there. Brilliant video and watched all the way through. Our bathroom and utility room are usually festooned with gear after a soaking hike. Boots are usually soggy so insoles are pulled out and loads of newspaper is stuffed inside and changed at least once before letting them air dry somewhere warm. I wouldn't be without gaiters either now. But at first, I thought they must be a bit ott and fancy for the likes of me! You have great ideas, Pat. All the best. Terry

Patrick you got my memory bank turning over, late '70's gear shopping trip started at Don Morrisons, London Road, then Thomas & Taylor's bottom of the Moor, onto Blacks on Earl Street then finally to the Alladin's Cave that was Scout & Guide Shop on Trippet Lane, with enough money left over for a couple of jars at the Frog & Parrot. Oh yes, the good times they were!!

Hi Peter, bringing back some great memories there, remember all those shops, and the Frog and Parrot, all the best Pat

Excellent again Pat. Distilling all that info into a watchable video is a good effort. Particularly enjoyed the gear care section - something not often covered in similar gear reviews. Looking forward to future posts! ATB, Garry.

Ha! Exact same rucksack Pat, been using it for multi-day Munro expeds for years......so lightweight and that bottom zip is utterly indestructible too. The Lightwave tents are fab too. Can’t beat delta pegs either. Hope that you are keeping well, best wishes from North of the big wall. 👍👍👍👍👍.

Speaking of luxury I went camping with my daughter, and took a genuine persian rug for the tent. We had storm-force weather and a mass evacuation of Dartmoor by the military in the 1980's. Stayed put and were fine (ok for us previous experiance on Pen y Fan and Norway) not recommended for others.
