Ok, so I made a couple of mistakes when I built this wooden gate.
Even a pro can look like a rookie sometimes! I love the look of this fence with horizontal slats. Maybe that was the problem, I let standards slip as I gazed adoringly at my own fine wooden gate. Sometimes it can be fun fixing a mistake though!

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book kzbin.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

When it works when you build it, and doesn't later on, is because of settlement. Settlement is not necessarily a mistake, but something that needs minor trimming to correct.

timber swells when wet, shrinks when dry, even pros can forget that fact about timber, so wouldn't say it was a mistake as much as error when you measured the timber to allow for swelling an shrinkage of the timber, other wise dam fine workmanship .....

Lovely design but I dunno if I could do that and leave those re-cut boards with the screws so close to the ends, especially when everything else was laid out and executed so carefully.. shame you didn't scribe the house-side post to the brick too.. (ha ha just kidding)

I think you’re being too hard on yourself. The wood probably swelled enough so that it didn’t rub when you installed, but became a problem later. I had this happen with a door I planed to fit. After taking off the paint, I didn’t have time to finish it, so I rehung the door. It rained that night and the wood swelled to the point it was actually worse than before. It’s amazing what water can do to wood.

@psidvicious 4 жыл бұрын
I have to take exception with you’re diagnosis of the mistake. You said you must have cut the boards too long. If they weren’t too long when you installed them, they’re not too long now. They haven’t grown in place or even expanded (wood expansion in the length direction is negligible). The gate sagged. The mistake was the bracing of the door, splitting it up into two pieces adding weight to the door and a less functional brace altogether, than a single brace. I would suggest, in the future, eliminating the wooden diagonal bracing completely and instead use a continuous all-thread from corner to corner with an adjustable turnbuckle in the center. This way, fine adjustments can be made to the door, anytime in the future. Gravity is going to win this battle every time, so it just makes sense to incorporate an adjustment into the work so it can be dealt with as needed.

But that wouldn't be as bad as the safety police going on and on about that kick-back yesterday. You use a mix of DeWalt and Makita so I guess you're safe from tool snob trolls. Nice work on the repair m8 - can't be easy running a business and not going broke doing it.
