Thank you so much for doing this. Finally, a successful end to my years of search for this show. I loved it as a kid and didn’t really know why. Seeing it now, I understand the quality of the writing, the characters, and the humor.

Me too! I was eight, so I just got the most basic gags, but I still liked it.

I remember this being a great show but I was way too young to really appreciate it We would have watched it on a black and white TV back in 1969 Thanks very much for posting this

Same here! I was nine and had never heard of James Thurber. My folks pulled their Thurber collections off the shelf and handed them to me!

Cool storyline. Glad I watched every ep new, as a child. Pure classic.

Joan Hotchkis would go on to portray Oscar Madison's girlfriend (Jack Klugman) on The Odd Couple shortly after this show ended. Lisa Gerritsen would go almost directly after this show on to the Mary Tyler Moore Show portraying Phyliss' daughter Bess

Interesting that this episode has a laugh track. Many of the other episodes I have seen don't have one.

A good series that never quite captured the imagination of the viewing public, at least in terms of viewership and ratings that would keep the show on the air.. I loved the show when it first came out as did my parents, but it never took off, and that is a true shame.

I bet this show was too “cerebral” for American audiences. Britain could have cerebral shows like “Yes, Minister” because the BBC could run excellent shows, even if the shows appealed to a smaller audience.

This show was based on the life of cartoonist James Thurber who was famous for being a cranky crumudgeon who hated women.

His wife said Jamie only felt that way about his first wife. Bill said his dad and Thurber were quite similar. Bill said, "I know my dad loved me, but I don't know if he likes me."
