Neelix, Llwhaterever her name is Troi, and Barclay are all likeable well acted well written characters. Now evil romulan lady isn’t hated because the character isn’t memorable... a character can’t be hated if people don’t bother to remember her name. Now as mor Michael B. yes this character is hated I have seen numerous KZbin videos dedicated to the hatred of this character. This character should have been number on this pathetic attempt at a most hated Star Trek character list. Michael B. is and continues to be a poorly written and directed character, I can’t blame the actress because she’s playing the part... The issue is that it supposed to be Star Trek not the Michael B Show. The writer have focused far too heavily on one character for Discovery to truly work as a Star Trek series. I hope in the next season they back off and focus some more episodes on other characters that can stand alone without the intervention on Michael. I am not anxiety stricken but still loved him, because I knew people like him from a very young age onwards and most of them exceeded in their careers because they thought out of the box and mathematics & physics came easy to them. And when you got them to accept you as friend, you personally benefit greatly from their insight! @@WanderfalkeAT In the degree to which Starfleet is like a nation's armed forces, this is the degree to which the Barclay types get screened out. I mean I was only in the army for a while but there were no Barclay types: brilliant but ineffectual, insecure but nice. Nope. A civilian attached to Starfleet might work though, as a more realistic path. Discovery picked up on this with characters like Booker. But then they made the same Barclay mistake with the Tilly character. As a personal aside: I went to a military recruiter at one point wondering whether I should consider applying to military college -- Kingston/St.Jean in Canada. They made it really clear that academic excellence wasn't the key, instead, things like athletics, civic involvement, initiative, character... or at least some stuff other than grades. Tilly doesn't go to Starfleet academy. Barclay tries to go but they find a reason to deter him/flunk him out. Why Star Trek gets this so wrong says a lot about who writes their shows and who they think their audience is. In contrast, because the writers (and their presumed audience) don't care about police work or security, they kind of get this right in the show. (I worked with the police later in life -- in Corrections -- and met plenty of red shirt equivalents -- I even had a co-worker who looked like Tasha Yar. [Men found her hot, but a bit scary, lol. Completely out of my league, lol.]) My only caveat in my comments above is that war changes things: a broader range of people enter service, not least of which because of conscription. Unfortunately, Star Trek lacks the subtlety to deal with this kind of question.

My top two will always be Wesley and Guinan, and not because the characters themselves were any worse than many others, but because of what it meant nearly every time they made a more than background appearance. Bad, poor and lazy writing for the story of the episode. They were just used to many times to magically solve the problem when the writers wrote themselves into a corner. Need secret, special knowledge or insight that no one in the crew should have a clue about? Don't bother going through the trouble of discovery, just have Guinan drop it into someone's lap. Need a technical solution that people who have spent their lives studying the subject can't figure out? Ask Wesley, who just happened to have figured exactly that incredibly obscure bit of whatever the night before. Lazy writing that ruins the quality of any story just as much as the cavalry magically appearing to ride over the horizon just in the nick of time.

if there was a top 10 misunderstood characters, I think Neelix would be near the top of that list. A lot of people think Neelix was annoying, but it's only because poor wording on the writers part. Calling Neelix's actions toward Kess as "jealous" when "over-protective" would have been a better word. Then maybe fans would have put it all together. He became a "trader" (lets face it he was a hoarder), after suffering a traumatic event in his life, the lose of his home world (and with it his family). There was no talk of just how long he was living by himself, in all that stuff. It was also only hinted at in some lines, saying that Kess reminded him of his sister. Yes he had romantic feelings for kess, but on a deeper leave Kess reminder him of his sister. I believe Neelix suffered from PSTD, which would account for all his odd/annoying behaviours. It was only really explored in the episode "Jetrel", honestly one of if not thee best Neelix focused episodes.

At two years old, Kes was anything but a child. If the total lifespan of a species is only nine years, you cannot equate its aging and maturation process with that of a species that has a life expectation ten times as long. To say that Kes was a child at two is like saying that Grogu "the child" from The Mandalorian was middle-aged at fifty.
@oddish43523 жыл бұрын
Well said. While it's debatable that a person that young would be that mature and capable, it's ridiculous to say that a person is a child all their life just because their natural life cycle has them reach adult size at a year old, reproduce at four, and die at nine.

Lwaxana can annoy the shit out of you, but there are just enough serious moments with her, the Dark Page episode and when trapped with Odo in the lift, that show you that her heart is in the right spot. Besides, it is explained that mature Betazoid women go a bit cuckoo during menopause. Including the ... fever thing that happened in DS9. It was silly, but the hormonal havoc she caused was funny. Sisko: "So ... does that mean ... Dax?!" Bashir: "Best not to think about it too much." Also, Majel Barrett seemed to have a blast. That being said, I very much appreciate not having a mother like her. :D

I fail to see how Kes' chronological age has any bearing on her physiological maturation. There are many creatures on planet Earth alone that reach full maturity well _before_ 2 years of age, chronologically, so I fail to see where that's any kind of shock in an extraterrestrial species. I am unabashed by my love for Lwaxana Troi. The lady has LAYERS. On the surface she is confident to the point of obnoxousness, but when you look deeper you see a woman alone and terrified that she will always be so. She is a very accurate portrait of someone afraid of aging. But this lady has levels of dignity, resourcefulness, kindness, courage, intelligence, and love and Majel Barrett's performance is one of skill and commitment. Yes, she does embarrass her daughter but she also loves her deeply. I never saw her as actively pursuing Picard, but rather enjoying her opportunity to tease him out of his stuffiness. Her interaction with with Alexander is warm and motherly; something the orphaned boy must have deeply needed. You might not have liked her, but I thought she improved every episode she was in.

If an alien matures in 2 years then it's an adult. What if vulcans matured when they turned 30, at 20 they're still a child.
@nobodyimportant24703 жыл бұрын
True you need to consider physiology when looking at age with multiple species. Something that lives over 1000 years is likely still a child at 100. Her species living 10 years makes a 2 year old equivalent to a human in late teens early 20s though that is still questionable with a man in late 30s early 40s.

I loved the Barclay character. He was very relatable for anyone with social anxiety. Naomi I thought was fine. But the elder Troi, I thought was a great character. I too never managed to like Kes (despite making the effort). But I have to say: your uber-emphatic statement "SHE. IS. A. CHILD." (8:09) is suffering from a major cognitive distortion. If a species lives *X* years, and matures at fraction *f* of *X* years, then a member of that species at >fX years old is _not_ a child. By your definition, when any Ocampan dies around 9 years old, they are still too young to fulfill their inalienable right to procreate (or to enjoy faking procreation without the follow-through cost of actual child rearing). This is a textbook example of ethnocentric thinking. I expect it comes from the modern need to unequivocally and vehemently fall all over ourselves rushing to be the first and loudest to denounce certain kinds of socially disapproved-of behaviors, lest we be labeled some kind of monster. But there is a middle ground here, where the brain engages and we avoid fostering monstrosity at either pole.
