Not sure if anyone else has already said this, but the whole "if you REALLY want to be sustainable you should just shave your head" thing just seems counter-productive to me (I'm not referring to anyone who is genuinely asking if that's the most sustainable option). I take issue with the idea of people policing others' bodies to begin with, but doing so in the name of "the greater good" is just bad activism. We want to persuade more people to take an interest in sustainability, not gripe at the people who are already doing their best.

When the shampoo bar gets too little or divided in several pieces, I put it in a little pocket made of thin fabric (such as those containing jewelry for exemple) ! It works really well ☺️

Also, not hair related, but I know you had mentioned before you were living on a budget, and as a student in college I have noticed it is EXTREMELY hard to stay in my budget while being sustainable, clean, and eating vegan. Like most cheap things are wrapped in plastic or made with workshop labor. Do you have any tips for that? Thank you for posting! We love you ☺️❤️

Africa Cordova dry beans and rice are readily available at most grocers in the bulk section and are super cheap/a great base for a lot of things. Also, check out a few grocers in your area to see if there’s a store with unpackaged produce at a fair price. If you have an aldi, the vegan chicken patties are boxed plastic free and are super tasty and less expensive than other stores. Also, choosing canned over plastic wrapped can keep your waste down while still making things cost effective. Also, check for different free pages on Facebook or browse Craigslist/LetGo for things people are trying to give away or sell for cheap.

I have definitely been there. Honestly, you just have to do the best you can in your situation. When i had only $10/week to spend on groceries, toiletries, and anything else i might have needed, the only place I could afford to shop was Dollar Tree, and i basically lived off of spaghetti and bisquick pancakes. The only store that offered bulk shopping at the time was a small section of kroger, but i couldnt afford to buy any of the stuff there. In my situation, i remained vegan, but i had no way of being low/zero waste or organic. Now that i am out of that situation and can buy the groceries i want, i have a hard time finding plastic free foods that are also organic. It's so frustrating that the non-organic foods are loose, but the organics are always wrapped in stupid plastic!

As for the soaps and shampoo bars and conditioners, I just stack the little bits of each until I have enough and melt and mold them back into one merged conditioner or shampoo bar. I used a cup to mold them in a circular shape and put it back to use.

for anyone curious about Ethique, I have long semi straight frizzy hair. I get an oily but often itchy scalp and dry ends. I liked St Clements (oily hair) but overtime it stopped working great for me, same with Mintasy (dry damaged hair) but I used them in combo until I finished both and it worked better. Now I use Pinkalicious (normal hair) and I honestly think it's the best bar! I know so many people with various hair types who use and love it. I also use Wonderbar for a conditioner, I found Guardian too heavy and not great to work with. I now just use it as a shave bar so it's not wasted!

pro tip from a soap maker: if it's not oil based, it's a detergent bar. That's why they tend to crumble and can be more drying. oil based = soap chem based = detergent
@faethy
@faethy 4 жыл бұрын
But also don't forget oil based aka soap has an incredibly high pH and is damaging to the scalp and hair shafts long term if you don't use an ACV rinse. Hair and our scalp is 4.5-6pH and detergents are around that or a 7 Max while soap is 8.5-12pH.

I live in the chagrin valley (lol chagrin falls to be exact) and it’s pronounced like how goggle pronounces it when you google it! But the town isn’t named after sadness 😅. The native Americans that originally lived here named the river shagrin, when meant clear water in their language, and at some point the white settlers decided to make it chagrin. Haha I don’t really know if you care about that, but I thought I’d share it. I live 15 minutes away from where they make the soap. I really want to try it but haven’t found a place in Cleveland that’s not downtown that has enough of a selection and I don’t want to pay shipping bc that’s just silly. Chagrin has a farmer’s market and I wished they went. Honestly I need to contact them to ask if they have a store in the warehouse where it’s made. 2 years ago I bought the lush shampoo/condition bar and at the time I was swimming and it wasn’t effective enough at dealing with that. But I just retired this past spring and have been loving the shampoo. The conditioner bar unfortunately still does nothing for me. Edit: ok I actually decided to do some research read more about them, and they have a whole bunch of vegan shampoo bars www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/help-me-choose/vegan-skin-care/#secVegan+Shampoo+Bars

Hi, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk about sulfates during a hair care video or not. If I’m not mistaken when you refer to the “gritty” bars those are the ones with either SLS or SCS. I was so excited to try the JR Liggetts you’ve recommended and, like most other oil based bars left sooooo much residue that took multiple washes with my Lush bar to get rid of it. I think my issue is mainly with my water as even an ACV rinse doesn’t seem to help. Unfortunately, Lush bars are heavy in SLS which I avoid because my scalp does burn a little after using but nothing has ever worked better to clean my hair! Although I would still like to avoid it, I’m about to try some bars with SCS as a happy medium between being natural and getting a good clean. It’s hard to find any unbiased explanations as to whether SCS is much safer or not. Do you typically avoid bars that have any kind of sulfates in them?

So here's my problem, and maybe others can relate. I have hard water where I live (really hard), and I don't have to ability to put a water softener in :( because of that, shampoo bars (and super clean, natural shampoos in general) won't suds up, won't properly clean, and won't properly rinse out. It's so sad because I was so excited to used them too! And I know this is the case because when I have used them when I've travelled, they worked perfectly. Anyways, just thought I'd share that because I wasn't aware that hard water could even be a problem when I first started trying bars out and it took a while to figure out what was going on...

I stopped using conditioner over a year ago and use ACV about every other week instead which was such a great switch for me. I just got my shampoo bars in today and can’t wait to use it, got a sampler pack of 15 from Apple Valley for $20 (full bars $8 plus shipping) and while I don’t know how much will be used up as shampoo that much soap will last me ages of “regular” use. I’ve always used bar soap in the bathroom so once I figure out which bar will work best for me I will probably just use it for both purposes.

I don't use more shampoo with long hair because my scalp stays the same size lol. I think it's a common misconception that more shampoo is needed for more hair because it's actually unnecessary to saturate all of your hair with shampoo. Just gently work it into the scalp & rinse. The only thing I may use more of is conditioner, but I only wash my hair once a week at the most. I really don't think most people with long hair use excessively more product, if much more at all.

Bar shampoo and conditioner was my first low waste swap and I can't go back. They are amazing! I use Unwrapped Life that is Canadian and sold at my local refillery sans packaging! So triple score in my books. I use the ones that were "okay" as shave bars until I found the two bars that worked best for me, the kids detangler conditioner bar (read fine tangle prone hair) and the balancing shampoo bar. I now have 4 bars in my shower, shampoo, conditioner, body/shave bar, and a face bar (for my acne prone skin from Beauty Counter). Everything takes up less room on one tiny shelf and now I have room to put my foot up when shaving and not knock over bottles - WIN!

Lately I've been sticking with HiBar's moisturize duo but in the past I've really like the ayurvedic bar from Chagrin Valley. The latter is vegan and has tons of oils. Double checked and it looks like only two of the shampoo bars aren't vegan (the Honey Beer & Egg and the Carrot Milk & Honey).

A good chunk of the chagrin soaps are vegan. They'll say if they are or aren't. Been getting their soap for over a year now and I love it. I get all my hair, body, and face soaps from them. They have smaller sizes to "try out" too. All different skin and hair types.

I have recently bought my first solid conditioner. It costed me a bit over 5 £. It's so soft and smells like roses, and, to be frank, two or three times I even used it as a soap on my face and I like it. :-))) So, yeah, anything that looks like a soap can be used like a soap. :-))

So Chagrin uses beeswax in some of their soaps and they do use palm oil in a few of their products but it is all sustainably sourced which is why i use it for me and my dogs. It is the best i have tried. I do use the vegan, palm free options only because they work best for my hair but isn't it important to support companies using it sustainably?

Whenever I have a bar I don’t end up liking I cut it into thirds or fourths and then I’ll give those smaller bars to my family and friends so they can all have a sample to try different brands. My hope is that eventually they will find one they really like and it will convert them 😂 my one friend is open to is now!

About shaving your head to be more sustainable: as a person who really did shave her head (not for sustainability though) i can personally state the following: the shorter your hair is , the more often you have to wash it! Because you can't just comb it on the third day and be +- good, you can't make a pony tail, you literally have to choose: wash your head or stay at home. So in terms of using less shampoo and conditioners maybe long hair might be more sustainable :)

I found a shampoo bar at a Marshall's/TJ Maxx for less than $10 and it's organic, so good to look at discount places like that. I can relate to losing hair; I lost all the hair on my body when I had chemo for breast cancer. It didn't bother me the way it does others, but still, it was quite an experience. My hair is longer again, due to not being able to go to a hair salon, but I really need it cut and styled soon!

Hi! Love your channel and often use it for guidance with my own zero waste journey. Recently Ive been concerned about microplastics from synthetic fabrics. I haven’t bought any new clothes in almost 2 years but Im learning that anything with poly, spandex, or acrylic sheds microplastics when washed and worn! Help! I dont have much of those fabrics but Im wondering if you know anything about recycling synthetic fibers in the best way. I also would LOVE a video on this bc I think a lot of people dont know about microplastics being shed from their clothes. Thank you for your guidance and content and making this world better little by little🥰🥰

I'm not her, but cora ballz can go in your washing machine, and collect the particles that come out after. Guppy bags are bags that you put your clothes in that keep all fibers in one place, so you can, again, throw them out. For a more permanent solution, microfiber filters can be installed in your washing machine. Girlfriend Collective has one. I believe that she has spoken about this, but if I'm misremembering, her friend, another YTber Shelbizleee has talked about the fabrics and installed a filter in her house. Hope this helps.

The thing with long hair... I've had short hair for 2 to 3 years and what I hated the most about it, how often I needed to wash it. With long hair, you can just stuff it up in a bun and go around for days with out washing it.. Whilst short hair, you can't cover the greasy-ness (i hope that's a word cause I'm german and in lack of another real english word :D) Soo for that I reason I would say long hair is more sustainable🤔

So interesting to see a dry skinned person with such different experiences. Oil based, ‘true’ soap doesn’t agree with my skin at all, far too alkali and drying for my dry skin. My shampoo bar happens to be an oil based bar that’s ok though a bit alkali in a way that tangle my hair so I may try a syndet when I run out.

Girlfriend, totally no reason to call yourself an idiot!! You made a normal human error, that doesn’t reflect on who you are as a human being in total! I think you’re wonderful, but sometimes it pains me to see you be so self-deprecating, and how we talk about ourselves impacts how others think they should feel about themselves too. Anyway, not telling you this to make you feel bad, literally just want you to feel encouraged to just be confident to be your awesome self, no apologies or regrets!! ❤️ I’ve also heard Shelbizleee (never know how to spell it, you know who I’m talking about 😂) mention that to cleanse long hair, you still only really need to wash your scalp, so the length of your hair doesn’t make much difference, least as far as shampoo bars go. And I don’t think having short hair or no hair makes you more or less perfect in terms os sustainability, because just being on this planet were going to leave some footprint somehow, and that’s ok! I don’t think anyone’s expecting us to disappear, be less a human, or less of who we are!

Hey, there! Awesome video 🥰 I really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing your experience with us. I have a question: do you feel that while using a shampoo bar compared to regular shampoo your hair gets more tangled? I recently switched to a shampoo bar and I love it, but I feel that my hair has become very tangled 😭 I do not usually comb my hair, but now it seems that I am gonna have to do it. But I am just curious if this happens to other people as well or I am just not using the right shampoo bar for my type of hair. Thanks!

I have noticed this when I've used bars (either a shampoo or conditioner, it's possible with both) that have been drying on my hair. The more drying (even if it's not super overtly dry), the more likely my ends are to get tangled! But it also depends on when I need a hair cut too. Right now, my hair is really long and I've been avoiding going to get a cut to save money but also the pandemic, and whenever it's been a while since I've had my dead ends trimmed (I'd say whenever I need a cut, the bottom two inches are ready to go out of dryness) and they're really long, they get tangled a lot easier when I'm in the shower. That might have been too much info, but that's what I've realized. I hope that helps! xo 💛

@@SedonaChristina thank you so, so much for the reply ❤️! This totally helps! I also feel that the shampoo bar is making my hair dry, but I love it because I used to have super greasy hair and I hated it 😂 I haven't cut my hair in a while too and it is quite long now, so that might also be a factor. I will try other shampoo bars as well and see if I get the same behavior. Again, many, many thanks for taking the time to read and reply! You are awesome 🥰🌸💝
