Hi Shelby! Happy Monday! Thanks for reviewing our shampoo and conditioner bar in your zero waste shampoo video, it means a lot. It was really informative and I’m sure viewers have learnt a lot :) Our sincere apologies for the confusion, all our shampoo bars are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, we use sodium coco sulfate, not saponified coconut oil which is essentially soap, our bars are soap-free and are pH balanced. Bars which are soap-free don’t leave a waxy soap residue through the hair, which means for an easy washout and no need for an ACV rinse, woohoo! If you wanted to dig into our ingredients more, we have the list of ingredients on all our products and if you click on an ingredient, a nifty wee pop up will appear which will give you a rundown of the ingredient :) And fret not, Shelby! We ship our products from our lab/warehouse to our customers and to our distributors plastic-free. Also, we are certified climate-friendly and working towards carbon positive (where they offset 120% of our emissions), so our clever little bars are carbon neutral. Hope this all helps! Hope you enjoy Heali Kiwi and Wonderbar Have a wonderful week, Jen

@allisonkerkhoff48334 жыл бұрын
I just bought my first shampoo and conditioner bars ever from Ethique. I have a sensitive scalp (I'm prone to breakouts and sores on my scalp) and frizzy, thick but fine hair (the individual strands aren't coarse but I have a ton of hair), so I use Heali Kiwi and The Guardian. I used them for the first time yesterday and I'm fully obsessed. My hair feels amazing and so light, and it was actually way easier to put them in my hair and rinse them out than I expected. I love that the bars are soap-free, because from what I've read, a lot of bars have soap and end up leaving hair waxy if not properly washed out. This means that with Ethique, I feel like I'm still conserving water. Anyway, I really love these bars. Everyone's hair reacts differently to different natural products because for a lot of us, our hair isn't used to not having harsh chemicals in it, but I really think Ethique is a great place to start!

Former Lush employee here. If you have super dry hair, which you mentioned, that's why all the shampoo bars are feeling the same to you. Someone with more normal to oily hair is going to notice the difference between the bars. I would only recommend the Avocado Co-Wash or Trichomania for drier hair (as a solid option). I have a few favorites in shampoo bars, and there are others that I cannot use at all because it doesn't work for my hair type. Also, a note on the palm oil. Many companies who claim to be palm free, are not actually palm free. They can state they are palm free if they don't have the direct ingredient. However, unless they are making their surfactant in house, they cannot guarantee they have no palm oil. Which is why Lush says they can't guarantee they have no palm oil. They used to say they were palm free, but upon testing, they learned some of the ingredients had traces of palm. They are working on making their own surfactant, but it's a journey, but when I left, they were in the process of finding decent formulas for it. Also, "saponified coconut" is just fancy words for sulfates. Lush's SLS is also coconut based, but they just say it straight because if you have an allergy/reaction to sulfates, you need to know that it's in there.

Thanks for addressing that SLS isn’t inherently bad and isn’t an issue for many people. I think it’s important to remember that companies will encourage and benefit from the fear of (generally) harmless ingredients because it gives them to opportunity to create and market new products that otherwise may not sell as well.

I have really sensitive scalp, regular shampoo makes it so itchy and dry that eventually it will bleed. I thought the problem was SLS since I can't tolerate it on my toothpaste either. I started to use lushes bars around 3 years ago and they have completely healed my scalp. My mom has the same scalp type and she also uses only lush barshampoos nowdays. I believe it is a tiny portion of people who truly benefit dropping SLS from their haircare.

I love that you didn't bash Lush as you could so easily have done in this video. I also appreciate you're view and I think that you make a good point. They lead the way in starting the conversation about consciously consuming and as someone who feels like their eco journey started with Lush it now makes a lot more sense. They're a high street retailer who have those initial conversations with consumers who would otherwise be going from H&M to Topshop to Primark and Superdrug during their shopping, they stop off at Lush and pick up something plastic free. It's not perfect but it's a start and right now in our current climate it can feel so overwhelming it's hard to know where to start being green, and Lush gives you an opportunity to change something without going out of your way like unfortunately a lot of other eco brands right now (as in they're online and often you have to research a little to find them and also double check they're not greenwashing).
@practicepositiveprogress53965 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! I think a big problem in the eco-friendly community is an all or nothing mentality that makes it hard for new folks to get into things. I'm looking to branch out from my lush bars now, but I never would have switched to solid products if I couldn't have bought them in stores, and I even got the woman at lush to give me a sample of the conditioner bar before I bought one. Those things lead me to make a switch I probably still wouldn't have made if I had to gamble with scent AND performance with online shopping. (plus I hate online shopping)

I have a tip I thought I’d share for people who experience scalp irritation, and might feel like they can’t find a zero waste shampoo that is designed for that! Prior to switching low waste, when my scalp would get irritated the ONLY shampoo I found that helped was Head and Shoulders, STRICTLY the Tea Tree oil formula. None of the other ones made a difference. Most likely because Tea Tree Oil is naturally antibacterial, and is known for being soothing for a lot of general skin irritations. Originally I tried so hard to find a shampoo bar with tea tree oil in it. Unfortunately, the only ones that did, didn’t work for me. Left my hair feeling tacky. I have found that lush bars seem to be the only ones that don’t leave that tacky feel on my hair. Good news, choose your favorite shampoo bar formula and then you can customize it for your scalp! I bought 100% Tea Tree oil from Trader Joe’s. I got a small glass essential oil dropper bottle and poured my Tea Tree into it. I leave it in my shower, so when I wash my hair I combine it with my shampoo. I do this by lathering my bar up in my hands first, then add a couple drops of the tea tree into my hand. I then rub my hands together vigorously to combine it with the shampoo and then apply to my scalp and scrub as usual. It leaves my scalp feeling so soothed! And over time it’s proving to work the same way as the head and shoulders tea tree formula, clearing up my irritation. I obviously can’t guarantee this will work for everyone but it’s helped me enough to want to share! Side benefit, if you have kiddos in school! It’s a known tip that Tea Tree scent being on your kids hair can be a deterrent to head lice!

Hey Shelby, there's a difference between soap shampoo bars and soap free shampoo bars, Ethique is briefly mentioning it in their comment below. Some of the shampoo bars that you're mentioning (Meow Meow Tweet, Bestowed Essentials, JR Ligett's) contain soap which means they're made by using Sodium Hydroxide. This means that the pH level of the final bar is between 9-10 and thus makes the bar alkaline. However, the natural pH value of our skin is acidic which is around 4.5 to 5.5 so that means that all shampoo bars that contain soap in them are quite irritating for the scalp and in my opinion not the best to use. You can see this by checking the ingredients list and usually it mentions "saponified", "sodium hydroxide" or when it has an -ate at the end of an oil ingredient (e.g. "Sodium Olivate"). Hope this helped :)

I'm so glad you talked about how sulfates are only bad for someone if they have a sensitive scalp. There was a lot of false info out there (still is) that all sulfates are bad and they're bad for everyone, but this isn't true. If people want more information, look at actual medical research articles, *not* anyone else. Sulfates are more cleansing so I wouldn't recommend a shampoo with sulphates if you have a sensitive scalp, if you have a dry scalp, or have 3C or more coily hair because those hair types tend to be hella dry and sulfates are pretty cleansing. They are great for those of us with oily hair (I tried no-poo for 2 months and I've tried other "scalp resets" and some of us just have really oily hair, no matter how little we wash it). Also important to note that ingredients play a big part in how it will perform on the hair. Lavender, sea salt, juniper berry, citrus, papaya, pineapple, mango and kiwi are SUPER cleaning. Butters (cocoa, shea), honey, and glycerin are going to moisturize either bc they're an oil, or a humectant. The last two in that list are humectants, so it'll draw moisture to the hair and won't feel as oily. However, if you live in a cold climate where winters are very dry, or a very desert-like place this could end up making your hair drier (since there is no moisture in the air, it will draw dryness into your hair, if that makes sense) so you would need to use a conditioner (so it draws the moisture from the conditioner into your hair). The closer any of the mentioned ingredients is to the top of the list, the more likely it is to have the effect mentioned. So just because you like the smell of something, doesn't mean it's the best thing for your hair type. I used to be a LUSH product trainer so I like to share all of this, regardless of the brand you buy from, because the information still remains factual and important to know.

Recently I had a problem with my order and guess what they did? They sent me a new one for free….I was shocked that a company would do that. Not only do they have great customer service but I’m in love with their products! I recommend Viori for everyone :)

I have dry, wavy, color treated hair with an extremely dry scalp, and my favorite shampoo bars are from maple hills naturals. They are all the same formula, but come in a bunch of different natural scents, and really moisturize my hair, while still cleansing, and are much mire gentle on my hair then most other shampoos. I use it before i bleach my hair every 3 months, and then once more each month, along with anytime i use styling products in my hair( usually about 6 times a year) , and my hair feels and looks amazing.

I have oily roots and use a solid lush shampoo bar called Jumping Juniper (the purple bar) and it has worked really great for me. (If you have oily hair and would like to try this shampoo and don't have any sensitivities, then I recommend trying it. After using the shampoo bar my hair overall feels really nice and clean. Also, my oily roots are cleaned and gone. I also noticed that the ends of my hair did not feel dry as they did when I was using a regular shampoo in a plastic bottle with lots of chemicals I didn't know about. Another thing I noticed was that my natural hair color was more noticeable.

I use the Trichomania shampoo bar and the jungle conditioner bar by lush. I typically wash my hair 2x a week. My impression of the shampoo bar is it lathers really well, fairly easy to apply and rinse out. However, if you keep this shampoo bar in a tin you need to cut off the red wax otherwise it can grow mold if the tin does not dry out completely before closing it. The jungle conditioner has a very strong smell when you get it, it made my whole bathroom smell like the bar. It's not a bad smell, just very strong. It conditions really well, but you need to make sure you rinse it all out otherwise your hair will look greasy. It sometimes takes me 2 rinses to get the conditioner out of my hair. I think I'm going to try the ethique bar next to see it works better than the lush bars I've tried.

I have very fine and oily hair (but a lot of it) and the Lush Jumping Juniper bar works really well for me! I don’t use conditioner either, I don’t need it. I could see how someone with less oily hair would find the Lush bars stripping though, they do give that squeaky clean feeling, and some can be harder to rinse out if you don’t take your time (although an ACV rinse helps rinsing out any shampoo bar!). I'm glad you mentioned something about retailers receiving their products in plastic and then removing it before they ship it. This happens in all retail establishments, regardless of their "low waste" image. Everything in a shop, either irl or online, arrives in packaging that is most often plastic. A store may have a display of soaps in paper boxes, but those boxes probably shipped from the supplier packaged in groups of 4 or 6 with shrink wrap plastic around them. Unless the item is sourced from a place that is committed to being plastic-free, odds are plastic was used at some point to transport it, regardless of what you see in the store. Recently I've been buying things from etsy, from small-batch creators who use paper boxes, no boxes, or tins (a lot of creators use plastic containers, I avoid them). Most of them ship in recycled tissue paper inside paper mailers. I feel a lot better buying my deodorant and other self care products this way. I have a friend who ordered Ethique from amazon because she got free shipping, and she was disappointed when it arrived in a large box with a bunch of plastic shipping bubbles. So always think about the source and how they ship. Thanks so much for this review, you covered all the big brands I was curious about.
@nadienalexandra75165 жыл бұрын
not always true Shari! There are unicorns out there making a conscious decision to avoid this. We package our shampoo bars in paper, and insulate our boxes with paper as well. If we receive plastic packaging from another supplier, we sometimes, simply re-use the plastic, and hope that the next person on the shipment food train does too. Boreal Folk (from BC Canada) uses waxed paper to wrap their shampoo bars and when they ship them to use, they wrap everything in corrugated cardboard.

LOVE my Hi-Bar! She mentions in the video she had trouble lathering, I think the reason for that is she was likely trying to get it to lather all over her hair. When shampooing, you should only be applying at your scalp, not through the ends. I do t have hair quite as long as Shelbi, mine is just above my shoulder. I find applying at my scalp and then working it in gives me more than enough lather. It really depends on how much hair you’ve got. OK, I use Viori shampoo and conditioner bars. I have had amazing luck with them. It took my dry damaged hair and made it soft and shiny. Just for reference I have course hair that is actually fine in texture. I recently went through a phase of wanting my dark brown hair to be blonde. Never a good idea. I loved the blonde, but my hair didn't. I ended up having to go back to dark brown, because my hair began to fall out! It wasn't my stylists fault. Hair can only handle so much before it just can't anymore. I switched to viori recently when, quite frankly, I'd run out of options...my usual salon brand just wasn't working. I saw Viori and bought it out of desperation. I'm glad I did. The hair fall is GREATLY reduced, and my hair is soft and shiny again. Give it a go.

I wish this was tested with hard water. I have really hard water and live in an apartment so I can't get a softener, not even the shower head ones. On a different note, is it better to get something in glass or compostable packaging? There are 2 natural deoderants I like, one in glass and the other a compostable tube. I want to know which one is better to get. I also have to order them both online.
@blisles76265 жыл бұрын
I don't know re glass versus compostable it would probably depend on whether you have access to an industrial composting (like a curbside) scheme. But I'd pick the one I'd worry less about travelling with as I do that a lot. I have hard water where I am. I find the lush ones quite harsh but they lather well. The lush conditioner bars don't lather at all. I haven't tried any of the others on this list as I'm in the UK and the only ones I'd heard of outside the lush ones were miaow miaow tweet but can only get them online. Cole and Co and Faith in Nature in bulk refills and have done really well with them. I use a conditioner bar from a local maker when travelling. She does use a conditioning agent in it which the lush ones don't have but it works amazingly. If anyone is in the South Wales area you may have seen her at craft fairs the brank is Folk Soap. It's not a vegan brand but a lot of her products are vegan and palm oil free and all are cruelty free.
