Hey Shelbi! I really enjoyed this video. In my laundry routine we have an Ecoegg, which is a bamboo pod containing eco washing powder ball, and then I just chuck it in the electric machine. We also tend to use the washing line, but our heating company is quite good and responsible toward the planet. Keep up all thse awesome videos :)

Someone wrote a review saying that Dropps releases bad ingredients into water. I haven't had a chance to look into that (still using up my EcoNuts). Do you have any insights into that?

Also, while the microplastic filter is obviously the most comprehensive, I'd like to hear you talk about the Guppy Friend bag. That and the CoraBall were the only options I found for coin-op laundry users, and the CoraBall didn't do well in tests comparing it against the dedicated filters.

It really shouldn't be an issue since they are already including catches for small items that slip through (ie rings) and you have to clean grime from those filters monthly anyways for maintenance of the machines.

Dryer balls are a LIFE CHANGER. Regular dryer sheets severely decrease the longevity of your clothes and obviously create waste for our environment.

How do they decrease the longevity of your clothes?
@xkristixx
@xkristixx 3 жыл бұрын
They contain chemicals that adhere to your clothes and also the dryer. These chemicals aren't always fully disclosed or regulated for safety. This makes the material of your clothes not as strong as it used to be, as well as makes towels less absorbant over time. I've also personally experienced this; I used to use dryer sheets all the time since that's just what my family did and my husband did not. I would wonder why my clothes would easily get holes in them and his shirts would last several years. The common factor were the dryer sheets I was using.

When we got married we registered for an over the door drying rack, and we absolutely love it! At the time we lived in a rental so it was an obvious choice, but even though we own a house now...it’s still amazing because we don’t have a ton of wall space in a convenient location to our laundry! Thought I would put that our there for anyone who could use that info!

I use a drying rack and then when my cloths are dry, I put them in the dryer, with wool balls. I put my dryer on air tumble, so there is no heat, it just turns and the balls soften my cloth. It only take 5 min. This was indispensable when I used flat cloth diapers for my kids and I wanted to have supple fabric to be able to fold the diapers. I will look into those pods, they look great, I hope they ship to Canada for a resonable price.

stainless steel wherever possible. I use a stainless steel litter box, stainless steel bowls and natural non clay clumping litter. Unscented! (better for the environment and for my kitty). I also have a metal litter scoop with a wooden handle, bamboo handled natural brush (although she wont let me brush her), ceramic cat fountain, canned food vs bagged dry food (better for them anyway). Fabric carry bag (still has some plastic zips and buckles though.) All of these items do cost more up front, but will save you so much in the long run since they should last much longer than their plastic counterparts. Good luck.

- I've heard the same thing about soap nuts and won't be buying them again. - I'm glad you didn't find something wrong with the laundry strips. I got them for my mom for Christmas to try. She does small loads and she can cut them in half versus the pods. - I wash everything in cold water. Even towels and sheets! I also use the dryer on my shirts and pants for about 10 minutes to get the wrinkles out and then hang them to dry. We have a long shelf/pole combo and I put my clothes right on hangers and hang them spaced out so they stay nice - we use wool dryer balls but they have little fuzzies and hair on them now. Should I use a defuzzer on them?

My hope is that this will make it more likely for me to not run out at a bad time and resort to the plastic stuff. Also, it really is great! Even on sweaty workout clothes.

I have been using Dropps and absolutely loved them too! However, my laundry unit is in a shed outside so during hot Louisiana summers the pods STICK TOGETHER. I could have just stored them inside the house, but honestly do not have any more extra space inside for that but do have a lot of empty shelf space in the laundry room. So I gave Blueland tablets a go and they are wonderful too! So that's another option.

While either I nor my parents live in places that have a dishwasher, my boyfriend’s parents have one and LOVE using the Finish foil wrapped tablet things that have the red dot in them, and the finish blue liquid. I might get a one time purchase of the Dropps dishwasher tabs for them this holiday and see what they think, though they’re very much hyper-consumer types that tend to think sustainability efforts are ‘silly’.

I just discovered an alternative to official microfiber filters. Most of the sustainable ways mentioned in the video cost quite a bit up front and I have a mini laundry machine so they wouldn't be particularly useful anyway. I just wanted to share that I tried using one of the reusable produce bags I have that has a really small weave and just tied it to the end of my washer's hose, and it trapped a surprising amount of fibers from my laundry. It'll now serve double duty as produce bag and laundry filter.

I work at Old Navy, and I got the okay to take hangers home. I ended up buying nice velvet hangers to keep in my closet, but I buy too many clothes. Breaking that habit lol. So, I keep the stuff I don't wear often in the closet with the nice hangers, and my work clothes and other non work appropriate stuff I wear frequently on a rolling rack with the plastic hangers. When I do my laundry, I stretch em out a bit to reduce wrinkling and use the plastic hangers on the drying line to save space.

Try using vinegar instead of, or added to, your softer. The crunchy feeling has more of do with residue left in your clothes from the products than the outdoor air, it's because the slower drying time means more of this residue stays. If your rinse it out more effectively with the vinegar, then they air-dry nice and soft! I haven't owned a dryer in 5 years, since I discovered this.

I've made the switch to dropps today! My hubby doesn't have much interest in being eco-conscious, but I will slowly make these changes for the greater impact in the end.

We have soap nuts in my country but no one even harvest them. Quinua craze did hit us. It was terrible since it's usually use by indigenous people and the price was extremely high. However, it has a normal cost now and quinua expands a lot so you use only a bit. Now our issue is with maca because it is grown in very poor soil and maca takes the little nutrients it has and since it grows in very cold and high places, it takes a lot for the soil to recover. That leads to another issue, the farmers just keep moving into new lands that will face the same issue and you end up with less productive lands by planting season.

I have 4 loads of laundry to do on laundry day (mine, hubby’s, hubby’s work clothes, and kids) so I have to use the dryer. We also sadly have no space for a drying rack inside or out. I also plan on getting some period underwear and using cloth diapers after baby girl is born, so that will add another load. We have some extra money in our budget this month and I’m thinking about getting drops and dryer balls. If it works out I’ll give our extra stuff to my parents to finish off.

I don't use a dryer but I can see how it would be good to use one for things that need to stay fluffy, I think it could prolong the life of bath towels as bath towels. However I'd still recommend considering which items really need to go in the dryer and which would be basically the same air dried

I literally JUST switched to dropps for laundry right before you put this out! I used them for the first time today. They did pretty ok. I might try those stain remover ones when I run out of my current stain removers

When I tried soap nuts, they turned my sheets yellow? And I washed them again and they were fine but I'm just wondering if anyone else had the same experience. Love you shelbi 💚

Wow, no, haven't had that experience and I've been using them for 5 years. Granted, I don't have white sheets, but I have other white things and they haven't turned them yellow. Bleach did though ☹️

After I bought a years supply of the Tru Earth detergent sheets (then canceled the subscription) 😬 lol it’s alright I have been trying to use Dropps but I have been struggling with the clothes coming out (when air drying) very crunchy and rough, as I do not use softener and I didn’t know about dropps softener until a second ago. Maybe I’ll gift my sheets to some family too but I will probably just use them since I’m set for a long time now

Just subscribed to drops and you guys she’s right it’s insanely affordable especially with her discount for the first round! Much cheaper than even one of those huge plastic containers of detergent! Thanks so much for always bringing us along your journey Shelbi!

Pods (dishwasher and laundry) are wrapped in PVA, a petroleum based “biodegradable” plastic. And while many companies tout that they do biodegrade, the truth is that the plastic (that’s what it is) needs very specific conditions to actually biodegrade. Specific conditions that are not usually met in most cities’ water management systems. So what you end up with in the outset is invisible, dissolved plastic molecules in our water. Great on paper. Not so much in practice.

So I like the idea and concept of the Laundry Strips. I've used them and like them, BUT personally found they did not get stains out very well. When we have a load of laundry that has heavier stains we actually have a bottle of laundry detergent we use instead now. I would love to give these dropps a try to see if they get stains out better.

I recently switched to dropps pods for laundry, and I plan to switch for dishes as soon as I run out of my current dish detergent. I have had a few issues with them in my HE front loader though. I also use only cold water, and even with the little bag they say to put them in for cold water they left a streak on one of my husband's shirts. I've been heating up some water and dissolving a pod in a bowl (thrifted for this purpose, never to be used for food again) and pouring the soap water into the washer with the clothes. This has been working fine, but I don't think I could talk my husband into doing that if he was the one doing laundry.

I would HIGHLY recommend checking out the Smartkleen laundry balls. You buy it once and it's good for 2000 washes and replaces detergent.

Top loader washing machines like the one you have are WAY better at cleaning clothes. New fancy front load machines require more maintenance and start growing mold on the rubber gasket after the first wash. I love top loaders. Also, another low waste option for detergent is All Free and Clear laundry powder. Comes in a cardboard box :)

I also did the math on TruEarth and thought it was just too expensive. I did find similar sheets at the store for $0.22 a load and like them. However, I’m moving somewhere with a dishwasher, so I’m considering drops once the sheets are done. Thanks for the info on these and why you chose what!

Thank you so much for mentioning the Cora Ball! I know in your previous videos you've mentioned micro plastics shedding from our clothing and finding their way into the ocean. We rent and have to do our laundry at the laundromat down the street, so it's bothered me ever since that I didn't have something I could do about the micro plastics.

I made a reel about sustainable laundry and it got over a million views but people were RUTHLESS- “you bought so much stuff you don’t need a microfiber filter” “if you cared about the environment you would hand wash your clothes” “your clothes probably smell like trash because you wash on cold”... thank god I’m not the only one doing this and there are so many kind people in your comments
