The clean cult hand soap caused build up in my bathroom sink, not sure if it’s from the oils but the only way to remove it was with a brush or using my water pik to spray where I couldn’t reach.

This is really helpful as an overview, I still mostly use conventional non-sustainable brands because I didn’t know where to start. If you continue this series may I suggest comparing the cost (per use) as well? That’s a huge factor and why I often find myself going for the conventional brands.

When I was on a budget with very little time to diy my own products my favorite place to get them was the dollar tree. You can buy powdered versions of dishwasher detergent and laundry detergent in cardboard boxes. You can buy vinegar in a glass bottle and baking soda for 59 cents. They even have rubbing alcohol for sanitizing. I've even found all natural bar soap without packaging.

I am SO glad companies like this exist now. I think a lot of household burden tends to fall on women. When I lived with my partner who didn't really care about zero-waste (it was more my thing), if I wanted anything zero-waste, I had to do all the DIYs, make purchasing decisions, do the cleaning in a zero-waste way. I ended up taking on at least 90% of our household affairs just to be zero-waste. The fact that these brands are out there now and I can order them online with a subscription is amazing. It takes so much of the burden off me, time-wise and emotionally. I love how equalizing stuff like this is.

I’ve been using a mixture of things for cleaning. I got into using Blueland going on two years ago. It’s a great idea for people trying to get into the more sustainable lifestyle. The cleaners aren’t bad! I think people are expecting the cleaners to be tough on grime instead of being an everyday cleaner. So whenever I need the extra abrasive I use baking soda added on top of the Blueland bathroom cleaner. I like their hand soap, hands feel clean and I feel fancy with the foam. The glass cleaner works as well as windex and the multi surface does a pretty good job, even against one of the name brand cleaners. They even sent out an email regarding covid and antibacterial cleaners vs theirs. I thought it was super helpful and honestly if you’re cleaning any surface with some type of soap it’s going to wash away virus and bacteria from the surface. It’ll be fine, you don’t need sanitizing agents. Of course unless the surface can’t handle soap and water at all(which most can handle at least a bit).

Honestly, I’m Mexican and I don’t remember the last time I personally bought cleaning items. Lol I just use a eco friendly and biodegradable Mexican soap that I’ve been using since I was a kid. I use the same soap for cleaning, laundry, and showering. Yes, showering. Oh and washing my hands in the bathroom and kitchen. Oh and obviously dishes. It does come in a huge plastic bag, but that’s the only bag I use. As a Mexican growing up my grandma showed me using reusable bags for everything including our lunch. Lol

Brianna Hupman I’ve been using Dropps laundry pods for over a year and LOVE them. I use the Stain & Odor Laundry Detergent Pods, Clean Scent and my laundry comes out clean and fresh smelling. I want to mention several things as considerations though: 1st, my kids are grown and I don’t do much that causes much odor or stain removal need so my evaluation is based on low odor, low dirt laundry even though I do buy the Stain and Odor pods. 2nd, throughout my life, most traditional laundry scents irritated my sinuses and/or caused headaches so I needed to use unscented detergent/soap. Dropps clean scent does NOT irritate my sinuses and does not give me a headache. The scent is light and fresh and for me, not irritating.

Paper towels in place of rags / napkins, went through costco-size packs of ziploc bags in a flash, single-use plastics for days, only saw the 'benefits' of single-serving [anything]. As I've gotten older (28yo nowadays) I've become much more environmentally aware, I was a strict vegan for years, and I've changed my habits. I'm not perfect and I'm always looking to improve and your videos are great for keeping me on track with being better! I recently purchased Blueland products (I got the set with the 3 cleaners and hand soap) and so far I am quite impressed. I used the bathroom cleaner for the first time on my toilet a few days ago, and wow. It got my toilet cleaner than any other product has! I mean, my toilet wasn't filthy by any means, but it just did so much better than anything else I've used. I love the multisurface cleaner, I use it all the time. I have yet to try the window cleaner, however, as I usually just use a microfiber cloth and water, maybe vinegar, then a clean rag to dry it. I really like the handsoap, too! My 8-year-old son loves the foaming soap, it makes washing his hands more fun for him so that's a huge plus. I am going to try Dropps next for my dishwasher and probably laundry (unless I decide on another zero waste brand). Thank you so much for these videos! I am now doing what I can to make my home as close to zero waste as possible by replacing my usual items once they run out with zero/reduced waste options. :)

Dope necklace, and I absolutely love the way you mix your eyeshadow colors on every video💜 You are so passionate, and it inspired me to consider a few for myself. I want to change my laundry detergent too (The Arm and Hammer is good smelling, but for two working and working out people it takes a lot) , so I think I’ll get the sheets you talked about. Dr Bronner’s in dark blue mixed with water is my current choice of dish soap, floor cleaner, bathroom cleaner, and multi-surface cleaner. I tried it at my sister’s first, and when washing my hands I noticed how squeaky-clean they got. Keep in mind it is tough and can take off old wood stains (learned that the hard way), and certain paints can melt with it. Overall it worked magic on my walls too, taking off all grind from previous tenants and making them shiny again. The packaging is made from recycled plastic, and is to be recycled. They have a non-scented version too. Thank you!🦋

A very helpful thing - for cleaning windows and mirrors - mix white vinegar with water (50/50) and voila done! This cleaned my windows better than any other cleaning product :-)

If you're on the fence about Blueland, just buy their refills and dilute it in your own bottles :) more sustainable to use what you already have, plus its cheaper >< just make sure you clean out old chemicals really well first. I ordered them and they also ship in a padded envelope that's filled with paper shreds instead of a standard padded envelope. (Shipping was also super cheap, a couple dollars iirc?) For foaming hand soap, look up Dr Bronner's "DIY"s, it's a 1:4 dilution with water. You can also use Kirk's bar castile soap, but that takes a bit more work but no plastic bottle

Thank you for making this video, as someone who's trying to take some of the next steps as I'm using through what I already had in my sustainable journey this was extremely helpful. I like and follow a lot of your other videos, and I love when you do product reviews. Especially because of how in-depth you go with companies being ethical, and their ingredients being truly sustainable, and thank you for the work that you had to do for this video, I appreciate it.

Since you already use dropps for the dishwasher, I'm curious to know why you are switching to truearth for laundry as opposed to dropps. Thanks and loved the video!

This is perfect, I know to always go to you for learning about products and stainability, especially more now that I am moving into my own house and trying to find second hand furniture and sustainable products to create less waste. I already hand my eye on blue land so this video helps a lot! THANK YOU. You being so educated on sustainability and the environment makes me want to research tons and create my own blog/website to help others understand the importance.

I’m sorry guys! Every time I make a video like this I try so hard to think ahead about the questions you’ll have so I can include them but I always forget something 🙈 she’s very particular when it comes to convenience. She apparently didn’t like fishing out the bag every time. Same reason I can’t seem to get her to hang dry her clothes 🙃

I would like you to do an IG story or a KZbin video where you compare zero waste cleaners against their mainstream counterparts to demystify zero waste cleaning. Ex. Blueland vs Clorox Dropps vs Tide Dish soap block vs dish soap in a plastic bottle.

Man when I was single I used to use soap nuts. Now that I have kids and a husband it’s not enough to get our clothes clean. I now DIY my laundry soap and love it. Thank you for making this video. I think you should do an updated review.. or maybe u did. I should check ur channel lol but I saw Blueland doesn’t make the bar dish soap anymore. They make a powder. I’d like to know how that works or if u like it :)

Hey Shelbi!! There's this other brand that I think you should check out! They're called HopePodz and it's a company owned by students. They have 3 concentrated cleaning products and they are liquid but contained in a dissolvable layer that you just drop in the cleaning bottle with water.

I'm so happy you posted this video! Even though times are weird, this is a great time for research and find better cleaning products for sure. Also I ALWAYS learn so much from your videos! I suggested Blueland when you asked on insta because I saw an ad and I'm so happy it made it in the video because not only do I have a better idea now of the company and products in general, but I also learned about SO MANY other low waste, zero waste companies out there! I don't have a problem DIYing laundry detergent and cleaning with vinegar and alcohol but with a baby on the way I want to make sure that I have options that won't hurt the earth!

Hey! I gave Blue Land hand soap a go about 2 weeks ago. It comes in an absolutely beautiful glass bottle that feels really good, strong and looks amazing. As for the soap itself, smells awesome! I think we started with a lavender one, but the starter set has 3 scents and I am excited to try the next one. Thanks for doing the video! We are slowly transitioning to zero waste brands and will be doing dish washer and laundry next so thanks for covering Dropps!

I have found to disinfect & clean that powdered tied, bleach, and water do the job. Not sure how sustainable that is since bleach comes in a plastic bottle but the powdered tied comes in a box. You also use very little of each so it lasts a very long time.

As a DIY all-surface cleaner, I use just water and dish soap (bought in bulk/refill) mixed in a spray bottle. It works great! I also tried the Meyers lemon dish soap months ago (before I knew they weren't the greatest company) and I dislike it - I cannot stand the smell of it!

Great video; super helpful! I feel very lucky to have a family-owned, mostly vegetarian little store close to where I live that has A TON of products that you can buy in bulk. I mean - almost everything you can think of (soap, baking soda, grains, flours, clay, laundry detergent, kombucha, nut butters, shampoo, conditioner - seriously, HEAVEN!). I never know what all this stuff is shipped in to the store (what size of container or what it is made of etc). In my case I think it’s better to shop there instead of ordering online. What do you think? Yes, I know I’m super lucky to have a store like that close by. I love this place and I wish everyone had an option like that.

Dr. Bronner makes bar soap. If your store carries it, it'd be by the body wash. I use the baby soap bar to wash my dishes and it works great. I can usually get them for $4 or less and one bar lasts me a full month (we do have a dishwasher and also use dropps). Oh and its wrapped in paper only so you can compost the paper!

The truearth strips seem like they'd be great for anyone who uses a shared laundry space (laundromat, or dorm/apartment laundry room). It's a lot lighter to haul with you and you don't have to worry about it popping like a pod.

Have you tried Force of Nature? My workplace has recently started using it at the daycare. I really like it, the only con is it kind of has a sticky residue after setting for 10 min but you can wipe it off. It less ingredients; only 3 ingredients: water, salt, and vinegar. It's also an environmentally friendly company. Reusable bottle, recyclable capsules, multipurpose, and formula lasts for 2 weeks.
